I should have been more generous. I shaped from late 70s through 80s and I used a lot of your techniques then but you have a great way of demonstrating and explaining.

Awesome video! I have been doing my concaves using FG Hawaii's blue flex pad with velcro, squeezing it width wise to shape it like a curved surform and doing sweeping motions from rail to rail (applying more pressure on center and barely any near the rails), almost like a pendulum if you see what I mean, work like a charm!

When I do my double concaves. I use Aipa's technique, they come out really well. For single, I was doing it very similar to yours. \_/

Damn I can't stop watching videos of how u shaping boards. Single I make it with the surform and planer. Before shaping a board I think too mucho on how to do it, what technique to use, etc, etc etc. Maybe that's why I screw it every time.

Matt, I want to thank you for really upping my shaping. Rails are so much easier using the 1 1/8 mark. Being an older surfer (63) it's been hard to get boards that work for me from other shapers. There is not a lot of surfers my age riding shortboards and the trade off between performance and paddle power makes for a lot of experimentation.

Thanks Matt I have watched all of your videos to inspire me to shape my first board! I’m curious if you adjust the 1/8” concave depth at all for different types of boards and conditions? Also does the double concave go all the way off the back of the tail?

I am glad that they help. My concave are progressive so increase as I move towards the center. Only in the tail behind the fins I can get away with concave to the edge of the rail.

I have shaped, single to flat, double to v and double to flat. Currently shaped an egg single to double to flat. Since you shape professionally and before I glass it to take it out. I wonder how would it ride? My exp. With double concave is that they are fast. The single to flat is not that fast. You think I made a combination to solve this and have the best of both worlds?! The shape is an egg, 7,3 x 22 x 2.75. Thanks in advanced.

I agree with the single to double is fast because the double creates a flatter rocker right where you need it.

Kyle Jenkinson bottom tuck is always last because if I do it first then it is harder to measure and get the deck dome right

Wow, you make it look so easy! How about a vee? Would you put that in before or after turning the rails? It seems like if you want the rail line rocker to be perfect you'd have to put the vee in first, because in a vee the rail line would be above the stringer rocker.

Barney Hartman-Glaser. I completely finish the bottom before doing the deck than rails. That finished bottom is the reference point for every thing else

Dude you are so money. I don’t make a lot of boards. Basically just one or two a year. You’ve got mad skills not to measure your fin box placement first. So my question is, if I may, do you keep your double concave in front of your side bites(side fins) or do you draw that subtly through to the front of the back fin? I have always gone V in the tail so was wondering about your last 16-12 inches there.

Normally my shortboard tails are 14.25"

Adam Coyne. I just use the little Stanley 1" block plane. They are cheap, I usually sharpen them once or twice then I replace them.

Matt Correia. Thanks Matt, I always do the concave before I do the deck (or rails) because I need to reference that finished bottom to get my deck thickness flow correct

+kazumasurfboards Hi Matt, do you refine the board thickness quite a bit before adding the concave so you take minimum foam off the deck when doing deck thickness? I thought that you can't take too much off the deck because of foam density being compromised? Sorry probably a silly question, but would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Valdo van Zyl. Yes, I take almost all the foam off the bottom so that I only need to take the minimum amount off the deck.(this was just a video example of doing concave but concave is always done before I do my deck) Not taking too much off the deck makes a much stronger and dent resistant board.

I have a board which has flat bottom contour from nose to chest area (When your lying face-down and paddeling) and transitions gradually to a double concave in the middle of the board (No single concave before the double) then it transitions to a Vee at the tail end. I do not know what does that do for the board or the rider or how the board will behave in the water. It's a 6'6" x 21 x 2.75 Egg shaped board. I still haven't tried it because we are still on strict quarantine. It's still wrapped in it's packaging. It's my 1st board. Been riding rentals. Would appreciate it if you could tell me what to expect with that kind of bottom contour. Most boards start with a single concave then gradually transition to double but this one, from flat, goes to double right-away. Please do share if you have tried a board like this. So you do your bottom rails first, then you shape the concave, then top rails/deck?

Bottom first, concave second, deck thickness flow third, deck rails fourth, bottom tuck fifth. The bottom rail tuck could be done after the concave if you wanted.
