In 2023 I had the goal of completing four sketchbooks, one for each season. I tried to stick to that goal. In this video I hope to connect you to the nature and the art. I even share an excerpt from a poem I wrote once.

This video is such a gift, Marty. So much beauty to find in both, your drawings and your words. Love the colourful autumn leaves sketches! 🍂 It was pretty cold here in January and we had some snow which I always enjoy! Now there is already a promise of spring in the air. Best wishes and keep sketching trees! 🌳

I'm new to your channel thanks to Lindsay Weirich's podcast. I really, really enjoyed you sharing your sketchbooks and videos. I hope to get out more to draw and paint. Your paintings are so simple yet I could easily lose myself in them. Excited to go back and see your past videos and new ones to come. Thank you.

That is so kind of you Kelly. It's nice to hear from folks that they see improvement. I decided a few years ago that I had to stop trying to meet the demands of the YT algorithm, which wants you to post constantly. Instead I'm just trying to focus on quality over quantity. Thank you for the support, it means a lot to me. Have a great day!!

Hi Marty, I just found your channel via your visit with Lindsey W and subscribed. I used to see you on Steve Mitchell's channel but somehow missed that you have your own. You three and Louise de Masi are my favorites art You Tubers. So now I am going to have to binge watch episodes I have missed here:) I enjoyed the tour of your sketchbooks and your landscape photography. As a Minnesotan, you really captured the essence in both mediums. I especially like your tractor sketches. (My least favorite are anything with snow - I can't wait for spring!) Seriously though, your sketches are all so well done and evoke both a sense of place and atmosphere which is not easy to do. Thank you for sharing.

Here Summer is the most dreaded season because it's so dangerous and so many people die just from the heat that we experience here in Phoenix Arizona most people believe that Arizona is All Desert it is the farthest thing from that. Yes we have stunningly beautiful desert and we have the only place in the world where saguaro cacti are grown plentifully. What people don't realize is that you can go two to three hours in any direction and be in a completely different climate other than the ocean which is about a 7 hour drive away. Autumn is an incredible treat here as far as weather goes and up north and Northeast you find the changing leaves and the Beautiful wildlife winter is nowhere near as harsh here as in other states butt in Flagstaff it can be. Our Dream for retirement which is only a few years away is to move 25 miles Northeast of Payson where it's a small Valley and there are less than 25 human beings. There are Timberwolves and gray wolves up there as well as black bear elk and deer as well as javelinas sadly but they're protected species. Thank you so much for sharing your work it is so stunningly beautiful and so incredibly inspiring. I wish that you had an opportunity to paint our Sedona sunsets which are the most colorful in the world. I look forward to seeing so much more work from you in the future.

Thank you for sharing this. I've had the pleasure of visiting many places in Arizona and definitely agree with you about the diversity of landscapes and weather. Whenever I visit the Phoenix area, I try to make it a point to drive up to Sedona and then on to Flag (as the locals sometimes call it). I'm always amazed at the wonderful changes that take place on that drive. If you can get up north to paint and sketch, I think the weather will cooperate, or you can wait for the other 3 seasons when it's not so hot. :-)

I recently purchased a small black tool box in which I could store my rotary tool and it's attachments. I wondered what I could do to make it different from the average small black tool box like the one my son has. So, I pulled out my Posca pens and have been drawing on it. It really is looking different now. But, as the box gets used, the acrylic ink will most likely wear off; but, that just means I get to do it all over again and make it look even more different. Thanks for sharing your books.

I only really 'see' you here on KZfaq but this video was worth the wait. You should start up an ASMR channel, you certainly have the soothing voice for it! Just as you came out with the comment about trees a split second before that I was thinking to myself, 'I love trees so much!' In my opinion, there should be more of them..and Dame Judi Dench agrees!! Besides your landscapes (I really like the double-page spread ones) you're very good at depicting animals. Bison are so cute, I'm glad they have made a recovery. My Mum discovered a documentary about them recently and she loved it. I'm wondering if it was on the PBS channel? She can't remember lol.x

Beautiful work! I'm curious to know if you used a waterbrush for most of these, and which paint brand (your Schmincke?). I've completed a couple of these Pentalic AquaJournals myself, and had trouble with too much water and overworking. You did a fantastic job!
@owingsart
@owingsart 6 ай бұрын
Hi Olivia - Thanks for the questions and kind comments. I do use the Pentel Aqua Brush for most of the work, but occasionally switch to a regular synthetic wc brush. I used mostly Schmincke, but also some Daniel Smith wc’s and gouache. I didn’t have any trouble with the sketchbooks, but I was using small amounts of water and sometimes gouache. I have heard others mention it though. James Gurney uses these books, although mostly for gouache. Hope this helps.

Hi Lynn - Thanks for the question. These are Pentalic. I used these because @jamesgurney James Gurney uses them and I like using gouache as well as watercolors. I also use a Hahnemuhle and Etcher sketchbooks. I just recently started to make my own, which is fun.
