As October draws to a close, we celebrate one whole year of 'The Car' by Arctic Monkeys. In the past year, it's fair to say that Arctic Monkeys return hasn't been short of neither glory nor criticism. Alongside their headline performance at Glastonbury raising a few eyebrows, The Car reflected another stylistic change for Arctic Monkeys, with many fans not taking to the album, yet other new fans now finding themselves admirers of Alex Turner and Co. So a year on, how should we look back on this tenure for Arctic Monkeys? Let's find out.

Album is extremely underrated in my opinion

Whilst I personally don't think it's underrated at all, I would argue Body Paint live is probably one of their best songs live ever; up there with R U Mine & Brianstorm for me

I would say that the album's rating is extremely well spoted by the public. I think is a very weak album because the songs are very elaborate but besides that the entarneitment of the art is the Alext Turner trying to sing in a different way ratter than experiment in a more pleasent way... The album it is worst than tranqulity base but better than suck and see

I absolutely love the fact that they’re changing their sound. It stays true to the name of their debut “whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not”. I don’t listen to Arctic Monkeys because of the genre of music they make, but more cause I’m a fan. I honesty normally listen to more alternative or garage rock but I can’t help but adore albums like The Car and TBHC. Can’t wait to see what they make next 🙌

I agree, I enjoy the changes! I absolutely loved TBHC, and do enjoy The Car (sadly not love it though). Like I said in the video, I’m not yearning for them to return to the early days or even AM - would love to hear a really over the top & epic sounding rock-opera style record! They clearly love it, given they dedicate so much time to Body Paint live with the huge instrumental they typically perform just before the encore 🤘🏻

it's the TBHC case all over again - it took time but I'm glad to see people finally realising the album's value. I think it being blayed live also helped with that. all i know is Body Paint live is one of my most favorite musical experiences ever.

Although Tranquility Base is my very favorite, maybe my favorite album of all time actually, with AM right there too for me, I truly adore The Car. Mirrorball cast such a strong spell on me from the start, it's maybe my favorite song ever (if not always my very favorite Monkeys song, if that makes any sense). Big Ideas makes me tear up every single time he hits that "waving their arms and stomping their feet" line. It's just so beautiful and everything happening in that moment between the music and what Alex is getting at in the lyrics just hits in such a powerful way to me. Every Monkeys release, from day one, has spent time as my favorite album ever, but the progression of these last three, AM to Tranquility Base to The Car, is exhilarating to me and I feel as great as everything that came before has been and I still love all of those albums and songs, this newer era is far more exciting and rewarding to me as a listener and as a fan. I just can't wait for whatever comes next. Long live Alex, long live the Arctic Monkeys.

Completely holds up for me, I just appreciate it more and more as times goes on, its probably the album I listen to the most out of their discography even though its not even in my top 3

I personally love The Car. It's not as solid as Humbug and Tranquility Base but still among my Top 3 AM records. I think you nailed it when you mentioned the Monkeys sacrificing one part of their fanbase for another. That's bound to happen with most musicians. Their music taste changed and the music they make reflects that. I was a huge fan of Whatever People Say and Favorite Worse Nightmare as a teenager but as I grew up I got distanced from the Monkeys and that style of music overall because I wasn't into that anymore. Until 2016 when the second LSP LP dropped and I was caught off guard. I loved the album and I was curious to see what the new AM might sound like. And Tranquility Base was astonishing. I became a huge fan of the record and I went to see them live during that tour. I listened to TBHC like 50 times by this point anf The Car was another banger of a record. Mirrorball is among my Top 10 AM tracks, it's amazing.

Well put 👌🏻 I agree, it’s sometimes hard to walk the line of when your taste’s change vs. what simply seems good purely from nostalgia. Overall I’m still looking forward to Arctic Monkeys doing something different, and I don’t particularly yearn for their past style.

I absolutely love the emotion of The Car! However, I've recently been on a Humbug / FWN kick and have to admit coming back to the "fuller sound" was a delight as well. Hopefully in the future they can do something with elements of both.

Alex was pretty interactive at the concert I went to, changing a line from Arabella to In Alpharetta. And told us we were a great crowd. I guess it depends on which show you’re at.

The Body Paint lyric “my teeth are beating” lives rent free in my mind. How do ones’ teeth BEAT? What does that mean? It drives me insane.

The Car was one of the first albums I got on vinyl and I absolutely love it, I was into AM beforehand but when Body Paint released its what got me properly into the band and I love how the band has transitioned over the years sort of reinventing their tone from WPSIATWIN to The Car. Digitally idk the sound of the album regularly doesn't impress me so much compared to their other albums but when I play it on vinyl it just unlocks a different feel which I think the band was definitely going for.

The way I see their discography so far is they had their 'classic' sound for their first 2 albums, and then they experimented for the next 2 albums and then everything came together stylistically for AM. TBH&C and The Car for me feel like that kind of 'dipping their toes into the water' with certain genres. I wonder if there would be another coming together of different elements of their past work which culminate in another truly great album that will resonate with audiences as well as AM and their first 2 albums did. To be honest though, I really think it's just a case of Alex Turner having changed over the years with his tastes and the kind of thing he wants to do, plus them being on the over side of the mid-30s means that they're probably not as driven as they were 10 years ago and they're peak relevance is in their past. Hope I'm wrong though.

@T.I.L.P

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! 😊 A few I’ve spoken about on the channel would be artist like The 1975, The Smiths, The Killers, Sam Fender, Mac Demarco, The Last Shadow Puppets, Tenacious D & Milky Chance. The ones I haven’t spoken about a lot, mostly due to not having any new releases/other reasons are artists like Pink Floyd, Queen, The Beatles, The BeeGees (mega), Nirvana, Alfie Templeman, Wunderhorse, Leif Vollebekk & probably my favourite artist of all time being David Bowie (Kooks, Ziggy Stardust & Aladdin Sane are probably some of my favourite albums). Being honest, I have guilty pleasures like a few pop artists like George Ezra, Charlie XCX, Dua Lipa & The Weeknd, or those early 2000s with Timbaland & Timberlake. I also sometimes revisit that sort of emo-rock era where bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Blink 182 and harder rock like System of a Down, Puddle of Mud & Slipknot ruled the world. But I keep that on the downlow 👀😂 My ultimate guilty pleasure though is Vengaboys. I will need to delete my channel now I have admitted such. I could probably rabbit on all day so I’ll leave it there haha. Hope a few of those were of some interest! Thanks again for the kind words! ❤️

Saw them back in 2015, very sloppy, Alex was extremely drunk, then saw them last week and it was one of the best gigs I went to recently. What's surprising when I saw them last week most of the songs were from AM (ironically my least favourite)
@T.I.L.P
@T.I.L.P 9 ай бұрын
Interesting, from my experience the gig I went to this year probably sounded the best I've heard them live (obviously the most important thing!), but felt the least "gig like" experience, and I had friends/family say the same thing from seeing them this year too. Still can't deny they sound great this year though like I said! I think they tend to fill their set-lists with a fair bit of AM as it's their most commercially successful album, so a lot of people are there just to hear it. I found it mad that 3 (nearly 4) of the songs from AM have over 1billion streams!

It’s weird, but I cannot listen to The Car. I do, however, listen to several tracks that just happen to be on The Car. But the album itself, in its entirety, never. Sitting down and listening to all ten tracks back to back drives me bonkers. It feels like the longest elevator ride of my life. It makes me want to go get something from the car to get away from that fucking album. But individually, I really do like some of the tracks. It’s almost the opposite of TBHC, where I listen to the album as a whole but not individual tracks (except a few). I don’t really know why that is, but I find that I do better listening to The Cat (the individual tracks at least) mixed in with their older stuff than I do if I try to listen to the whole album in one go.

I think one big issue with the album is that the mix is so odd. I've heard quite a few non-musicians say "Wait, why is his voice so much louder than the song?". And I agree. It's just way too loud and nothing fits well. The songs definitely sound better live

to me its Alex's weakest lyricism of his whole career. and this is an album that really needed good lyrics to make up for the lack of energy. but it feels like he thought he didn't have to try as hard because it was easy listening and the production would carry. Alex is one of my favorite lyricist ever so i really don't know what happened. His lyrics have always been a bit abstract but it sounds like he used a madlib to put these lyrics together.
