The death of the only monarch most Britons ever knew brought to an end a reign which had lasted 70 years and 214 days - the longest in British history. Steadfast in her service to country and Commonwealth; a constant in British post-war public life - the outpouring of grief which greeted her death was powerful and personal. Four out of five of the UK’s population weren’t even alive when she ascended the throne.
