My one drive doesn't automatically backup in Win11, because I have only local accounts there. And the Microsoft's bully behaviour to shut down competition resulted in me switching to Linux. You see that giant middle finger, Microsoft?

You have to do that step, the first time you turn on (or the first time you use) your computer. Microsoft makes it difficult to avoid signing on with a Microsoft account. But there are videos showing how to force the option of a local account to be available. I recommend that everyone use a local account, and never be at the mercy of an internet connection to a Microsoft permission server in order to use your own computer. Also, if you want to use a Microsoft account, you can still create or login to a Microsoft account, after you have already logged in to your local account. 2) Unless you have a specific need that can't be handled any other way, never use cloud based storage (more on that later). There are videos on how to remove OneDrive. Or, do not save any files in the directories that OneDrive uses to take your files. The reason that Microsoft automatically opts everyone "in" to OneDrive, and the reason Microsoft forces everyone (except those determined to thwart Microsoft's invasive actions) to use a Microsoft account, is because Microsoft does not care what we want. Microsoft (Bill Gates) wants control over everyone's computers, and everyone's data. Microsoft wants your files. I say "Bill Gates", because of course he is behind this. He knows that this is happening. He could stop it in an instant. But he allows it. Therefore, it is his doing. When it comes to OneDrive, or any cloud based storage service, you are handing complete strangers copies of your data. It is simplistic for those services to run algorithms on your data, index your data, and create a detailed profile on you. If you have business trade secrets, or anything that you would never publicly share, then you should never use a cloud based storage service. It is not that anyone is sitting in their cubical and looking at your data. It is that they can. If they are issued a court order, then they will hand over all of your files. If you ever become a person of interest (person making headlines, for any reason), Microsoft's executives and key software developers will be able to go to your account and see it all. If the courts in your country will not issue a court order for your files, then a government agent can go to a country that does not respect your rights, and that other country can hand over your documents. Remember that these cloud based storage services have physical sites all over the globe. And your files are likely all over the globe, when you use any of those storage services. Remember that it is simplistic for them to run algorithms on your files, and make a database of who is in your photos (facial recognition), and check the legality of your photos / videos, the meaning of your written words in documents, etc, the same as ChatGPT can do, instantly. If you insist on using a cloud based storage service (sharing your files with complete strangers), then you should first encrypt your files, with strong encryption, before handing those files over to the storage service. Remember, when Microsoft (or anyone else) is steering you towards sharing your files with them, it is not an accident. They want your files. Their so-called "free" service is bait. Do not take the bait.

I removed the OneDrive spyware.

OneDrive is the root of all evil. I tried to remove content from it the other day and it blocked my IP address as it reported "high usage" to download my files. Fortunately I have them on a portable HDD

If you actually want to use OneDrive but later change your mind, you also run into problems because OneDrive doesn't properly adjust the location of your previously backed-up materials. "My documents" and its subfolders still point to the OneDrive folder in your drive, not the actual corresponding (original) folder on your drive. Since "My documents" still points to OneDrive, if you decide to delete your files from OneDrive folder because you think they are old copies, boom goes your data; pray they went to the recycle bin and didn't get permanently deleted.

Stop giving money to companies that abuse you.

Win 11 is overall just worse than 10 and 7.

That’s why I switch to Linux (Fedora) at the beginning of the year, enough is enough. I was afraid so switch but I just regret to not make the switch sooner.

What I hate about onedrive is that it now interferes with my online games. FF14 saves working files in the documents folder during gameplay. files are constantly being moved back and forth from the cloud, slowing down the game. Wow takes an excessive amount of time to start a game because its files are not available locally. Everyday Linux looks better and better.

Fix Windows? Why? Just ditch it completely.

Apparently, Microsoft is attempting to be rid of local accounts. They seem to be drooling over having our data sitting on their servers, by their actions, along with having complete access to our data. I feel like we are being groped and expected to enjoy it. Good thing there are some options out there for most of us, besides Microsoft. I was able to log out of my one drive (Win 10) however, I get pestered often about it. Good thing I only use the OS for non MS video games, until I figure out the Linux options for what I play.

Back in the Windows 95/98 days, when you installed Windows, setup had the option to choose which accessories or optional features to install. Now Windows setup doesn't have that and installs everthing

I speculate that Microsoft wishes to harvest users' data for AI and marketing purposes; there would be a furore if Windows™ did this on the user's computer, but if it's "backed up" [sic] to OneDrive, that gives them the ability, and probably permission.

One drive on mine pc is not existing and never will be, i dont really need backup services.

Companies are performing deceptive acts lately and highly unethical "policies" like saying you don't own it even though you do and someone is spewing nonsense this is becoming a concern Microsoft REALLY wants to cause a global shift to Linux.

Giving users the options to pick and choose the features they want in a comprehensive way that covers all of them will probably never happen. That would involve respecting the decisions made by their customers and that will never happen unless every government in the world (including the US) passes strict enforceable laws to make it happen. Microsoft only wants money. They don't care about what people want or complain about so as long as the money is coming in. Gathering and monetizing user data is a gold mine they will never give up of their own free will. Microsoft will keep finding ways to make it harder and harder to install Windows with a local account for this very reason. Sooner or later, the workarounds won't work. Windows users are fighting a losing battle unless they can get their country's government to step in and do something about it. The stuff the EU is doing is great, but something big needs to happen in Microsoft's homeland of the US for the real big changes to happen and good luck with that.

What else does MS do without permission... a lot and it all goes back to MS to "help improve the service". There is a striped down version, it's called Windows11G.

What about upgrading from Windows 10 to 11? I have a similar situation as one described in this video, i.e. My Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Videos and Pictures are displaced on another physical drive. My questions are: 1. if I upgrade, can it even be done with local account, and will it then preserve my installed programs? 2. I will need Microsoft account because it is associated with Microsoft 365 (Office), so local account is out of options 3. The amount of data in My Documents and Desktop is huge (measured in GB), so syncing is also a very bad option :) Does anyone have any experience with OneDrive syncing during upgrade? Would unlinking my PC from OneDrive (there is an option for that under OneDrive settings) BEFORE upgrade stop automatic syncing?

Apple iCloud is just as bad. 1. It's not encrypted. 2. On a mac, it will upload your entire Desktop, Downloads & Documents folder. 3. It's extremely difficult to disable without risking data loss.

This onedrive crap is total BS, i've read about options to set up your own cloud save, that can be basically any size, and free, well you have to pay for the drives, but after that. The same goes for my wife, as i'm planing on setting a NAS at home, i do this clous as well at the same time, then what ever company, can do what ever, go F em self, for being greedy. I'm not really good with PC's, but i have friends and family members that are.
