Volcanoes can pose major dangers. The eruption in 2022 of the underwater Hunga Tonga volcano in the South Pacific alarmed scientists. It was the most powerful ever measured with modern instruments. Do we need better early warning systems?

In 1980 Mount St. Helens blew up. This should have triggered a serious look into the potential disasters that volcanoes can present. I still don’t think the risks from volcanoes I are taken seriously.

Actually the highest recorded in history was 74,000 years ago and happened in Toba Indonesia and was rated as a VEI 9. I was wondering if that happened again only this time in the modern world what would be the long turm consquences?

There is no VEI 9. VEI 8 is the highest, anything above the VEI 8 rating is still a VEI 8. But the super eruption in Italy was still incredibly powerful and deadly to a lot of creatures and humans. And Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai would have been incredibly deadly had it happened on land.

@@Crogatho There has never been a supereruption in Italy. Campi Flegrie has produced Italys biggest eruption and that was a VEI 7 around 1/3 the size required to be a supereruption.
@Crogatho
@Crogatho Ай бұрын
@@timberry1135 The Campanian Ignimbrite was the eruption you are talking about, and it was a VEI 7, with deposits found all the way in Russia, some 2000km away. It was Europe's most powerful eruption, not just Italy's. But no, it was not a super eruption. But, that eruption still shot an estimated 300km3 of tephra 70km high into the stratosphere, and about 450.000 tons of sulphur dioxide.

The answer to why NASA has a an enormous budget while the rest of the world doesn’t co😢to the degree that the United States alone spends on international volcanoes monitoring systems. If the rest of the world would also pay their share as most of the volcanoes are,outside the United States and we are not just going to cover the expenses for the world, when if every country budgets to the United Nations for any and all international science monitoring systems for geological activity and exploration for the worlds safety.

NASA actually had a rather small budget, something like 1% of our countries budget goes to NASA. That’s not small amount numbers wide, but it could be better funded rather than giving it all to the military lol

Considering it has just had the largest quake in over 40 years this week, and the Italian government is even considering paying people to leave... I wouldn't take my chances with it. Especially knowing the Italian gov has been notoriously unconcerned in the past. Even volcanologists that study it are saying they have no idea if it could erupt tomorrow, next month, or years. They are completely in uncharted territory.

We were born here. Our schools are here, our families are here, our jobs and businesses are here. The area is one of the longest and continuously lived areas on earth. Where exactly do you suggest millions of people, their lives, their jobs, their properties, and their family move to? And for what? In the off chance of an eruption? I don't mean to be rude, but asking "Why don't you move" is a stupid question. Why don't people in Louisiana, US, move away from the swamp or away from areas subject to hurricanes? Why don't people in Tornado alley move where there's no wind? Why don't people who live in the desert move where there's more water?

@@kimcoon5614 Speaking of Campi Flegrei, we can only go off historical data, and the directions and observations of Osservatorio Vesuviano. Earthquakes are part of the natural history of this area and there is no data that supports an imminent eruption. So any evacuation would be preventative and temporary. So with that in mind, tell me how you would evacuate the area and for how long. Afterall, there's no way of knowing when anything is going to happen. Where would you move the entire population of Campi Flegrei? For how long? How would you manage the day-to-day operations of the hospitals, banks, post offices, ports, public services, schools, daycares, universities, prisons, and military buildings, that are currently active and operating there? Campi Flegrei count 500k people. IF there was an eruption it would impact a minimum of 850k people up millions. In fact, in case of eruption, the whole area of southern Italy would be at risk. The area of Campi Flegrei is the opposite of wealthy, many household are multi-generational, and much of the housing is public housing. Employment rate in Italy is low, housing in challenging, and our population is old, so we're faced with two choices: 1- Depleting the savings of a lifetime to move our families (the young, the old, and the sick included of course), leave the area to go towards unknown destinations, face unemployment and possibly homelessness, disruption in employment, in education and medical care, just in case a natural disaster happens, or 2- Continue to live, work, and study in our homes and follow the guidance of the experts. So, your comment is not only silly but displays a complete lack of understanding of the topic, the geography, the history, demographics of the area, and what it takes to evacuate a metropolitan area. Furthermore, it's presumptuous. Do you think you're the only person who saw the danger? Why do you speak as if you had a simple solution that could be implemented at any time, in any situation, at the drop of a hat? Why do you speak as if you knew better than the experts? Why do you speak as if we were complete morons and didn't know of the dangers of the area? Do you think we all have a death wish? Or that we don't care about our lives? Do you think we're not scared? Or do you think we're sitting on pots of gold that we're unwilling to part with? Your comment is more than silly, it's ignorant and it displays a lack of awareness for anything outside of your bubble. But please, do tell us how we're being ignorant for staying in the only home we have ever had. Now, if I may give you some advice: do not speak on things you do not know. Do not judge people unless you know first hand what it means to be in their situation. And, most importantly, do not speak as if you had the solution, cause you sure as hell don't.
