"Every act of goodness is charity." [Prophetic Hadith: Al-Bukhari]. Every act of kindness that one does is charity (Sadaqah). Charity is that which the donor gives from his money, and this includes both obligatory and recommended charity. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) explained that performing acts of goodness takes the same ruling as charity in terms of reward and recompense.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Almighty, said: Spend, O son of Adam, you will be spent on." [Hadith: Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Spend, Allah will spend on you; i.e. do not fear poverty by spending money and giving in charity, and do not be stingy. If you spend on other than yourself, Allah, the Almighty, will spend on you because: {Whatever you have will end, but what Allah has is lasting} [Quran 16:96]. This Hadith reflects the meaning of the verse: {whatever thing you spend (in His cause), He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers} [Quran 34:39]. It encourages spending in righteous causes and gives glad tidings to the spenders that Allah will compensate them with His mercy for whatever they spend in this regard.
