Space Hulks arent really usable ships, they are mostly the wreckages of ancient ships while others are more like giant ship graveyards floating through space, some of which are so enormous that they have developed their own gravitational pull. It is possible that some of these space hulks may once have been the ships of the primarchs, although they are not necessarrily of human origin. However you are right in saying that they have major firepower...assuming that you get their weapon systems back in actual working order. Some space hulks are actually repaired to be used again, some by certain chaos warbands and most of them by orks. (Sorry if i made any typos, english is not my first language.)
