Between these two headphones, the Monitor 80 are indisputably the better open-back headphones (because the Monitor 60 aren't open-back).

Yes, that was an error on my part due to the 60s arriving late and being a very fast turnaround. ☹️

I think you can do better. If you don't NEED a closed and open back, I'd combine your funds and get a better closed or open headphone.

I don't have either (yet) but most online sources mention the Monitor 60 to be a closed back design. It's important to verify this fact since the market for tracking headphones may be thrown off if this is misrepresented.

Yes, that was an error on my part because they arrived JUST before I was due to review the Monitor 80s so I rushed a bit. It doesn't change my impressions of their sound, but it is an important distinction.

Great review as always! I did some digging around and found out the while the Monitor 60s look open back, they're actually closed back. That may explain their boxy sound. I'm currently looking for an open back dynamic. Would you say Beyer's DT 880 are worth it over the cheaper Monitor 80s?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
My research on the 60s was a bit lacking as they came in just before I was ready for the 80 review and got tacked on (but with proper, considered listening of course). Sorry about the error! As for the DT880s vs the Monitor 80, I would personally take the 880s. They have their own issues with a v-shaped tuning and slightly sucked out mids, but I do prefer them over the 80s

Thanks for the excellent analysis. From you descriptions it seems Monitor 60 could use re-tuning ( if - possible - why might its upper bass be that elevated?) I bought Monitor 80 for $59.95 and considering it came with a functional hard shell case, quite a bargain. With unprocessed drum tracks such as Steve Maxwell's channel, (and no EQ) Monitor 80's tuning sounds more natural on the floor tom and cymbals than my HE400-X4. Is there a way to make a simple flat-plate headphone measurement rig which approximates a proper rig? I think if might be done with a cavity for a mic such as my Dayton USB mic and fudge around with damping. I tried a Scotchbrite surface on pink foamboard which damped some reflections but it probably leaked too much in the low frequencies. I think it could be done empirically - If a good reference curve were available for tuning the rig.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest challenge with building your own rig is knowing the characteristics of the mics and the rig so you can compensate the measurements effectively. As for the Monitor 60, I don't know what would be needed for tuning - perhaps some controlled venting and some additional damping, but I'm no expert on tuning headphones

Dampening wool or acoustic foam as used to build loudspeakers can be used. You can check if there are any gaps or holes where sound can escape, besides to the rear, especially holes on the ear side. For treble control and bass tuning the holes in the drivers can be covered or opened. If you glue a piece of lose acoustic wool onto the center of the driver, it should reduce the bass and make it "dryer", more controlled, less boomy. That influences also the perception of treble and mids. The lack of mids and upper mids can be controled by lesser thick ear pads. Background: I bought a pair of super-cheap Aliexpress Siindoo headphones, 2 decent drivers and some dampening material to get an idea what the different mods would do. The drivers and the pads did most.

Good review, my impressions more or less line up with yours (at least for the Monitor 80; I don't have the Monitor 60)! I will say the marketing I've seen especially locally for the Monitor 60 is that they're firmly closed back (and that their grills are supposedly decorative unlike the 80) so I was wondering where the semi-open info came from. Anyway, interestingly enough in PH at least one legit seller sold the Monitor 80 for $50, and other sellers have it at $80, and at $50, while I personally didn't feel compelled by them (as I prefer slightly brighter sets in general), for people with a decent desktop DAC/amp delivering 2vrms or above they are I guess a curious option to try out even if the detail retrieval firmly puts it where it's priced at and nothing beyond that. Running them off of a dongle that has lower power delivery than the likes of the JCally JM10 is not ideal at all, which I know is obvious given these are 250 ohms headphones, but it was worth trying to see how they sound, and basically the upper treble and lower treble regions are more uneven, where cymbals literally sound broken. More positively the adjustability, flexibility and accessories are great additions to a budget open back headphone.

It's possible I've made a mistake about the Monitor 60 being semi-open. I received them later and didn't have as much time with them as the Monitor 80s so my research was potentially a little lacking. There's no doubt that the Monitor 80s perform like a budget headphone, but I think they're definitely serviceable for the price

Thanks for the review mate. Please also show the raw frequency measurements against a target such as the Harman... I would really like your take on the new Shure SRH840a.. please dont ask me to send them to you... take care..
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
I'm really not a fan of the emphasis on the Harman curve and worry that many people seeing graphs represented this way believe it to be the reference for good sound (which it isn't) so I prefer to stick to my current approach of a compensated graph that will appear flat if the headphone is truly dead-neutral. It then makes it easy to see where the perceptual peaks and troughs in the sound are so people can decide based on personal preference of tonality. As for the Shures, I really like their cans that I've tried, but don't currently have access to demo units

@@PassionforSound I am not a very big fan of Harman either.. Find the sound to be a bit thin.. regardless, I know where I like headphones to deviate from the target, so I still use it for reference.. fine if you do not want to show raw FRs... thanks for your response

@@PassionforSound I wanted to buy the Edifiers but some reviewers have said they do not have much volume. Mind you I listen on normal volumes... Do you travel with them? Do they get loud enough in public?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't travelled with them so can't comment on that, but they have good noise cancelling for regular ambient noise and I'm certainly nowhere near the limits for my comfortable (and not particularly low) listening levels.

Do your research first before confirming the headphone type and setting up a review, because the Monitor 60 is a closed back headphone. Still a thumbs up though for your video. :)

@@PassionforSoundIt's likely the term 'closed-back' appears somewhere ON THE BOX for the Monitor 60, so "extended use" or 'more time' wasn't required... just a moment to read.
