It occurred to me that growing up with video games helped me immensely when starting DnD; lingo like "HP" and "RNG" are so common to gamers that the extra ones like "BBEG" just fit right in

It can be even harder to learn D&D lingo after a decade of playing a totally different system. Also learning the lingo of a new system after playing D&D for many years. I have a friend trying to do the former, while I and a different group are doing the latter. 😹

On top of that, imho there's a plethora of "homebrew-lingo" for each table, referring to insider gags or a certain players personality, especially in groups who know each other very well. At my (German speaking) table, we're working exclusively with the English core books, all modules I run are in English, so there's tons of opportunities to lose yourself in translation. One of my favourites is our habit of calling a "Dexterity Saving Throw", in short "Dex Save", a "S*x Dave" - and I think, it's beautiful. Totally adolescent? Sure. Cringy af? Hell yes. But: It never gets old.

D&D lingo isn't half as bad as forgetting that most people don't know a lot of medieval terms. I can't count how many times I have had to explain what a Fletcher does or what a Flail is.

This is hilarious and I think I picked up most of the lingo from osmosis when I learned. Then again, I got the basic books pretty fast and studied long before my first game so maybe that helped bridge the gap for me. Thanks for the new video! Oof, I remember THAC0 from Baldur's Gate. Given how young I was when I was playing, all I got from it was "high number bad, low number good." Had no idea how it was calculated or how it played into the actual combat.

Just got finished with my groups weekly session. Last week my character intimidated the boss into doing what she wanted and this session we all tried to kidnap a child to bring with us on our quest. It did not work because we are all blind apparently but we ended up befriending a manticore instead. Can't wait for our next week session where we try to kidnap a grandma and my character gets to ride said manticore we just befriended

Idea: You make a video about the problems with every D&D class, such as the wizard's squishieness and the warlock's need to take naps. Maybe you could do something where someone makes a character and the DM is like "You sure? It struggles with (INSERT PROBLEM HERE)" and the person picks a new class and the DM is all "Actually, it's not good at (INSERT PROBLEM HERE)" and this just continues for every class.

I joined a party that uses minimal lingo and just talked normally. Made is so easy to get in lol. I only had to learn a couple of words and they were mostly mechanical terminology you expect to learn anytime you get into a new hobby.

This is really any game or fandom. There is usually a bunch of words you don't know. Some examples would be, "Muggle", or "the Force", or "Hasta la Vista"

I… don’t play a whole lot of DND because I can never get a group past session 0 but I do watch a lot of people play it on KZfaq and I also watch R/RPG Horror stories a lot so~ I learned a lot of terms there
