In this video, I try riding a Onewheel XR for the first time. I bought a pint a few months ago and have been loving it, so when I made a trip out to California I wanted to rent an XR to give it a try.

I'm a pint rider of 1300 miles. I tried an XR one time very briefly on open pavement. Can definitely tell the difference in turning right away, and while the acceleration felt the same, the XR clearly has higher speed limits. On the pint you feel the pushback aggressively fight you starting at 15mph, but you can "Captain Morgan" stance it to push it faster, I've gotten the pint up to 20.2mph before but if you hit even a small dip at that speed you risk the motor cutting out. But with the XR you can just push it right up to 20 before feeling any pushback. That extra power sensation felt nice but not nice enough to justify spending double what I paid for my pint. Plus, something about the big wooden pads of the XR bugs me. Anyway, great video man.

The Vega tire on the XR sucks. Throw a Hoosier on there and you’ll get an experience as carvy as the pint.

You raise a good point about the wooden footpads. At first, I really loved how try they look, but now I feel like they quickly age and make the board look old. I live in the Seattle area which means a whole lot of rain. As soon as the wooden pads get scuffed up and then wet - they look crappy. My original pre-order Pint pads still look great.

I got to try an XR for the first time a couple of days ago and I think you missed out on one aspect of it. After riding over 1200 km on a Pint, I immediately disliked the feel of the XR. Too big, a little less "zippy", less maneuverable (even with a Hoosier Slick tire). However, as soon as I rode off the pavement, it was incredible! So stable and comfortable on grass and trails. I take my Pint on trails pretty often but I have to deflate the heck out of the tire and that means I only get about 7 or 8 km of range. And it still feels sketchy on grass and gravel. On the XR, grass was barely an inconvenience and I could go as fast and carve as deep as I wanted to without worrying about eating it. Not to mention having all the range you would want before your feet fall off! In my opinion, that's the real strength of the XR. I would still use my Pint for sidewalk surfing, but the XR is on another level on the trails. Keep up the high-quality content, and find some trails! Still super fun on a Pint :)

OneWheel specifically advertises XR's for off-roading, so you're completely right there. Some of the downsides are just inherent to a bigger machine so its all about pros and cons. Bigger onewheel? Less maneuverable, less "zippy" but More range, more speed, more versatility.

Great vid! The lack of maneuverability you felt gets a lot better after getting a bit more experience on the board but more importantly, after breaking in the tire. Brand new ones like that have sharp corners that make it really hard to turn.

Great video! I 100% recommend getting the Quart, it's changed my riding experience ten fold. The install process is quite straightforward especially following their video, there are only 3 challenging aspects that I encountered. 1) Removing the T30 screws (these are really tough to loosen). I recommend getting quality tools for this, or even better, go to a mechanic or a friend (what I did) who has these and is used to working on equipment like this. 2) Make sure you buy a 'Five-point bit set Tamperproof', you'll need this to open the battery housing. It's not your regular 6 point key, and it's not just a 5 point, it's gotta have the the little dimple inset. Double and triple check you're getting the right one, they're quite hard to find, most people get theirs online cause they're not widely available from your local store (for the Aussies: you can find them at Supercheap Auto). 3) Putting the o-ring back on, as mine was stretched. It takes a lot of patience, as it might not want to sit inside the channel anymore. While the o-ring is (somewhat) sitting in the channel, gently go around the channel, pushing the o-ring to outside edge of the channel, therefore creating a slightly larger area for the o-ring to sit in. This took me like 5 mins but it's critical because it keeps water out. Once you've got it sitting inside the channel, close that puppy up and the hard part is over. Hope that helps someone, and good luck!

Gotta wear pants man! I ride pint 600 miles with no fender 100%. I love the look personally and i hate when things get clogged in the fender. It's a much quieter smoother ride without gunk in the wheel like leaves, dirt, mud and other road debris. Regarding the maneuverable stuff and form factor....everything is completely customizable. I would say the XR is the most versatile, customizable board to this date, even after the release of the two new ones. I strongly believe your experience was just a rough first one...I had similar my first time too. But then i met a guy and his wife who had custom boards and the ride on their XR was impeccable...like...a quantum leap in fun and riding experience overall and it made the pint feel like i was only getting about 30% of the onewheel experience. I actually never enjoyed my pint quite the same. Ignorance is truly bliss. lol...Their boards were completely badgered, waterproof, upgraded rails, hoosier tire, different pads on top and back cushioned and swag in everyway you can imagine...it was then, when i realized...the XR is the way if you want to experience EVERYTHING onewheel. Loved your video bro! Keep making content and your views, and subs are sure to measure up to what you deserve :D

I'm still waiting for GT - round tire, top range, top speed, SimpleStop feature (yes, I like it and use it 99% of the time) - my dream comes true. +Agreed, the fender is a must have accessories, unless I don't get the trend of Onewheel community, driving basically by XR owners (the same is true about the SimpleStop feature).

@@RichardKohberger mainly the size of the board. I have size 11.5 shoes and the pint barely fits my feet. It hasn’t been too much of an issue but an increase in size would be very welcome. LOL - Rocks in your shoe. I went through that in the first week of getting my XR. Then I was convinced that I needed a Fender ... but which Fender?? I rode a borrowed OW at a meetup one day. We rode mostly on grass. As I was riding, a small branch got stuck between the wheel and the fender. I spent 5 minutes trying to get it out as it then wedged itself between the wheel and the board. At that moment I knew that I wanted a Mag Fender - easy pop off and on. I'm with ya - Get A (Mag) Fender!! 😄🤙 (I am not associated with Craft & Ride)

Got a used pint earlier this year, loved it despite its downsides (lower range, lower stability). I figured I would look at upgrading after next year to a GT or Floatwheel but then a deal I couldn't refuse on a 4209 XR ($50 more than I paid for my Pint) came up, so now I have both. I feel like I was spoiled a bit by how easy the Pint and its stock tire is to turn and carve, now I have to learn to do them more proper on the XR to get tighter turns and carves, it has a Burris treaded on it. Will probably sell the Pint, can't justify keeping it around getting dusty just for a ride once every few weeks. The XR is just better on our crappy roads.

This is very much a review from a casual OneWheel rider's perspective. It's a bit hard for me to fully connect with some of the sentiment as a long time enthusiast. The range is by far the worst thing of Pint that makes it a poor choice. The maneuverability is not going to be that different for a truly seasoned rider. My son first rode OneWheel at 5 years old preferred Pint because it's easier to turn. But once he turned 8, he asked me to move him to XR for more sensitive footpad sensor and faster speed. Rich mentioned he rode Pint for 3 hours on Pint and still have 20% battery. He must be riding incredibly slow or taking lots of long breaks. I do definitely agree on fender. I can never understand my OW buddies who insist riding without fender even on wet grounds that got their shoes and pants soaking wet. Pint is still plenty of fun if you really can't afford an XR or really need to save the extra money. But if you can afford it, just spend a little more money buying a used XR rather than a new Pint or Pint X.

It's the vega tire. It's crap and rocks sticks to it and shoots it up. Once I changed tire to hoosier it's much better. More round and carves like the pint but still stable and rocks don't stick to it so less pebbles shoot up. But for wet days you would still need a fender.

I love the stability of the XR. The Pint is too small for me, All One-wheels need finders. Are we not civilized? Just got back from a weekend at he beach. I suggest riding only at low tied on the flat hard beach. Fun at first, but I would hit pockets of unstable sand and nosedive. If I had done these nosedives in the street I would really be hurting. I didn't like the beach surface that much. After 10 miles and 5 nosedives I gave it up. Great video, keep making them. subscribed ;^)

Would love to know a bit more about how you put together such a video, I can only aspire to be as good as this, but love playing at it. Can I ask you how long it took you to shoot such a video and then edit it? What camera/audio equipment did you use and what editing software, many questions I know but this old boy needs all the help he can get 😀. I currently have two GoPro 9,s a wireless mic and small directional mic, many other camera accessories to suit all different situations(tripods etc.) even a Wiral lite cable system! So all the gear no idea!!! I struggle getting my head around how to plan shooting without it taking all day all week etc. Just to put together a shortish video for KZfaq arts your secret or do I just have to accept it takes a very long time to learn and shoot such a great video as you’ve done here!!!!? Right I’ll stop talking now and hopefully get some tips from you when you’ve got time, many thanks Gary

Hey Gary! Most of the gear I use is linked in the video description. I edit in Final Cut. I think iMovie is a great program for beginners if you don't want to jump straight to a paid "prosumer" program. I don't do much planning for my videos. I have a general Idea of the story I want to tell, I make sure I get and into, a middle, and a conclusion, and other than that I just shoot and figure it out in editing. I watched some of you stuff and I have a couple things i'd like to see in the next video. 1: B-roll. get some shots of your surroundings, a close up of the wheel on the ground, a shot of whatever interesting thing you saw, and edit those shots on top of your main shot here and there to add interest. 2: Mind your length. you have to be ruthless about what you cut out and what you leave in. Practice editing a basic montage to show that time has passed without showing all of that time. Put a song under it and cut to the beat to get you up that mountain faster. Also, don't be afraid to cut out silent moments between your talking if you don't feel that anything interesting is happening. I also made this video a while back on another channel about my filming setup that you might find helpful kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eshiZtJhtNGwm4U.html all the best! looking forward to your next video!

@@RichardKohberger Thanks for your reply, much appreciated and will certainly take onboard your pointers. I use Cyberlink Director Suite 365 so will stick with that for now I think as I`m very slowly getting to understand it, although the issue is often not using it enough to remember everything when you do next use it again! The cutting to music beat thing is something I`ve always wanted to get proficient at but not sure how to really do it easily, do you have any specific tips on the best way to do that? Length is something for sure I need to get brutal with, in the case of my karting videos they are full length because the guys I race with enjoy watching them back in their entirety so its got a kind of small specific audience, but everything else I agree it needs a more brutal approach.
