No but seriously, if the US government learned that their navy was legitimately attacked by the IDF, i'm pretty sure they would've retaliated by either sending aid the Muslim nations or by cutting off all relations with the Israelis. If the official US archives states that it was basically just an accidental freak accident, then the scenario in which the IDF really didn't mean to attack a US ship is more likely. I'm more willing to trust official US sources over the testimonies of individuals because they don't provide the full context of the situation.

@@Admin.-tt2li From what i've read on the U.S Department of State's website about the attack (history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1964-68v19/d284), it seems like IDF command mis-identified the USS Liberty as Egyptian and thus strafed it soon after. It was only when 2 Israeli helicopters were able to finally identify and convince themselves that the ship was American that they realized their mistake and regretted what they had done. Seems like the whole attack was a genuine mistake by the IDF and had no malicious intent behind it.

That’s the official story, survivors amongst other accounts have stated the IDF was informed it was a US ship, it was flying the US flag and there were communications beforehand about where the ship was traveling.
