In this video, I answer common questions about how to grow onions successfully, including how to plant and care for onions. I also address how to successfully grow onions in hot climates like the low desert of Arizona. Over the past 12 years, I've had varying success growing onions. Some would grow well, but an overwhelming amount seemed to bolt, or “go to flower”. After seeking expert advice and more trial and error, I finally had consistently good harvests and now feel confident sharing my best tips for growing onions.

This is the first time I’ve grown onions. I planted white onions last October....and just harvested one from the garden yesterday, along with a small red onion too (I planted the red onions later, so it was smaller). They were very tasty on our burgers. This is the first time I’ve ever planted beets too.....and they are the sweetest beets I’ve ever had! They taste so much better than the ones in the store. Store bought beets taste like dirt to me. Mine almost taste as sweet as a fruit. I’m going to juice some tomorrow. This was pretty much an experiment this first year, growing things that I never had before.....and it’s been pretty good! Been learning from several KZfaq videos on tips for various vegetables. This is the first time I’ve planted marigolds in my garden too. So far, I do seem to have fewer pests than previous years. I have mostly only grown okra and tomatoes in the past. Okra is so easy to grow, that stuff grows like weeds! But this last crop (last year), was attacked viciously by aphids like I’ve never had before. It was a battle to keep washing the leaves off.....then a whole bunch of lady bugs just showed up one day, and went to work! I’m not growing okra again this year.....still have a lot in the freezer. I always hear how people have more zucchini than they can deal with when they grow it, but I always had a problem with blossom end rot....and I made sure to have calcium and other nutrients in the soil too. Then I learned the other day that you need to prune back the leaves, as the bees can’t see the blossoms.....which will also look like blossom end rot when they don’t get fertilized by the bees. Now, I’m finally getting zucchini’s! Yay! This is the first time that I’m training watermelons, cantaloupes, and cucumbers to climb a trellis.....so far, it’s working out great. Oh, I’m in Mesa too.

I am so happy you made this video for us, thank you! It's the best video for preparing and planting from start to finish I've found. I have your calander and live here in Phoenix so I'm getting ready to start with the onions. I get the same amount of sun, but what acidic fertilizer or ammendment do I need to work into the soil to make it an Ideal environment to start growing here?
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Usually adding compost and a balanced organic fertilizer is a good idea. If you're not sure about your soil, I like this test kit: amzn.to/3jdOWzi - Onions grow best in soil with a pH between 6.2 and 6.8. Consider having your soil tested. If your soil is too alkaline, amend the bed with peat moss. If your soil is too acidic, add limestone.

We’re in a cooler climate (we might get into the 80s for two weeks Max all summer) so we started the onions from seed and they’re doing very well! @OSGCourtWatch
@OSGCourtWatch 3 жыл бұрын
All good tips...two I would suggest additionally...(1) don’t plant your onions too deeply. (2) when u see bulbs forming “ring” or loosen then soil around (not underneath) each bulb with your finger or a small tool...any pressure from soil will reduce the size of your onion bulb. Also, when starting from seed, use as deep a container as possible so your roots can be buried deeply...often our onions lie on their side for a couple weeks before they stand up towards the sun...

Thanks for the useful tips and information. However, what should I do if I’m planting the onion set or stem with roots just to get a long term supply of spring onions (the green stems) and not for the onion itself? This wasn’t mentioned and I’m wondering what are your tips and advice for getting a permanent supply of green shoots? I’ve tried an onion set and it was producing shoots until recently one shoot bolted, the others didn’t seem to grow back (yet) after I cut them for use. Also planted two bunch of shoots recently and some of them bolted too. Can I just leave them to keep growing shoots? How do I get them to keep producing?

My dixondale farms onions have been in the ground and grow bags for months now. Planted at the correct time last year. I have lots of greens but when i did down theres barely anything there just roots. What could be the cause of this? Not enough fertilizer, too much, not enough water, too much? Ive been useing bone meal and fish emulsion. Can i speed them up now or is it too late? Thanks

They begin bulbing depending on day light hours and the type of onion you planted. Short day onions will bulb earlier, long day onions won't begin bulbing until there is more daylight.

So if they flop over, how can one have them give you flowers and seeds?

It's June and my onions never fell over. Didn't bolt either. I finally gave up and picked them. The green part is really big and healthy by the onions are still pretty small. What might I have done wrong?

We support our onion greens using horizontal cut flower netting to prevent premature wind blow over...works great for us

My guess is the variety wasn't right for this climate.

I really want to grow vegetables and fruits however with the price of fertilizer etc its just not worth it. I have to make or buy a garden bed =$40. Fill it with dirt, let's say I dig it up so that would be free. Then I need fertilizer =$20 if I am lucky. Then I need to buy the seeds which will be around $12 for the amount of onions you grew, then I need to use light inside to grow which costs .31kwh here where I live. Then I need to plant into garden and spend money on two bags of plant food which will be another $25 at best. Plus water and maintain them. If it was a hobby then yes it is worth it but to save $$$ I don't see that. Sams CLub big Ol bag of onions for $8. I know it's not the same but cost effective.

Mine don’t bolt, they just don’t grow and before you know it all I have is a golf ball with the stalks falling over, and they never get big and I start them when I’m supposed to and transplant when I’m supposed to, nothing works ever

What is your soil like? That can make a big difference in the size of your onions. Sunlight also helps.

Can I start my onion seeds now but outdoors? I don’t have a grow light for indoor seed starting. Also, do you keep watering during the winter or is it like garlic and goes into dormancy?
@GrowingInTheGarden

Depends on where you live - Here in Arizona, yes it's a good time to start onion seeds outdoors. They don't go dormant over the winter, they require some water as they grow.
