How to make perfect crispy onion rings in a skillet. This is my mom's recipe (almost). They come out crispy every time, without a mix or any unusual ingredients. These onions won't pull out of the onion ring. These are the perfect side for hamburgers, hot dogs or any other sandwich. They also, make a great appetizer.
There's an interesting story behind how my mom acquired this recipe that goes back to the 1970's. There was a small country diner in Gum Log, Georgia, where we were living at the time (and where we lived for most of my childhood).
We didn't have a car, so we had to walk the two miles each way to get a special treat every so often. Mom loved their hamburgers and being a kid, I was fond of their hot dogs.
On one of our visits to the diner, we noticed a new addition to the menu which made our mouth's water. Miss Gladys's Famous Onion Rings. We were kinda poor so we couldn't afford onion rings for the both of us, so we had to share one, but Miss Gladys threw in a few extra rings.
They were delicious and we ate every last crumb! Mom knew that it would be several months before we could splurge at the diner again, so she cut a deal with Miss Gladys for her recipe. Mom traded Gladys her recipe for fried Okra for Miss Gladys's onion rings.
When we got home, mom whipped us up a huge batch of Miss Gladys's Famous Onion Rings and we ate until we were sick.

CONTEMPO! When I fry my onion rings, I do it in the oven. I set the temperature to 400°-450° and put some oil on a baking sheet. I put that in the oven for about 15 minutes while cutting the onions n making the batter. I put the onions in the batter all at once to go a little faster. Remove the hot pan, quickly put your onion rings on it and put back in the oven. Turn onions over when one side is browned. They crisp up nice when the oil is already hot. I do it this way because I'm disabled and can't stand at the stove more than 5 minutes. 👍♥️👍

Maureen R Thank you for the idea on using the oven. Not only is it healthier but your right for us handicapped standing (or like me I’m on a chair with wheels) at the stove for a bit is hard or your face is close to grease splatter. I also use a screen guard that helps if you really want fried instead of using the oven.

Good morning blessings from the Blue Ridge Mountains Va. Since I lost my husband of 24 years together in January , I have been in a fog until I started watching your videos. Not only did I lose my precious husband, but I lost 80% of our belongings from our storage building when we moved here. I just couldn't pay for the storage building after he left this home to be with our lord . Your videos have given me the Miracle of actually wanting to start cooking and canning again. I haven't wanted to do anything but stay in, sleep, and eat a sandwich . I am not looking for pity because I know he's in a better place, and others have their own situations. However, I love the way you take the time to explain and compare . This box of utensils would be such a blessing to replace at least one of many items I have no longer or can afford right now. Either way, you choose isn't going to make me stop watching you. God Bless you, your family, and ALL your viewers 🙏.

@@dittohead7044 Watch your fingers! You can easily get carried away and then swoosh you hand or finger instead of the veggies. It came with a safety handle thingy I promptly ignored cause it left too much veggie uncut. You can make the best sandwiches now by cutting all your veggies really thin. I use mine every tie I have to cut an onion.

Contempo. Anytime I see onion rings I think of a little patient I had when I was doing home health. She had been diagnosed with bladder cancer and her appetite was poor. She would eat onion rings from the Sonic when she would not eat anything else. I went to check on her and in her sweet southern little granny accent she said to me"I wished you would have brought me some onion rings." Her daughter I could tell was embarrassed and she started saying "Mother that is your nurse. She doesn't bring you onion rings. You let me know if you want some, don't say that to your nurse" I told her daughter that was fine she could tell me too if she wanted onion rings. My next visit,I went with onion rings. They were the sweetest family.

Contempo. i just watched your video on onion rings and I saw the Contempo giveaway but it's too late for me to enter. However, you reminded me that I had taken your potato potato pancake recipe and we made them for the homeless. I cook three days a week in a homeless kitchen and and yes the cheese stuck to the metal spatula that we were using. I wish I'd had one of these to use. Your recipes have been a big inspiration for me to try things to see if the homeless will like them. Our fryer the kitchen is broken but one of these days when we get fixed I will try to do your fried chicken recipe for them, deep fried because serving a 110 people a day, I can't be skillet frying. i am happy to report to you they very much enjoyed your potato pancakes. I've never watched cooking shows in my life, but I love yours and I love the food you cook (my mother was from Georgia) and that you love and share Jesus. Thank you so much!

CONTEMPO I have recently subscribed to your channel. I found you by searching for Tennessee Recipes. The reason being that my Me-Maw's family was from Tennessee so I figured that her recipes were from that area of the country. The first recipe that I checked out was Buttermilk Biscuits. I was hooked. I truly appreciate your christian values and your patience of explaining your recipes. My Me-Maw never wrote a recipe down so most of my cooking has been from memory and your videos have helped me remember her tricks and indulgences. Thank you and your family for bringing this channel to me. I look forward to your future shows., Janet Youker Youkers' Quarter in Houston Tx

CONTEMPO-Momma’s Onion Rings I am going to store today to get some GrapeSeed Oil & look for the powdered buttermilk. I noticed you didn’t have to wear an apron while frying these rings. I ruin so many shirts so an apron is a must for me. Purchased your cookbook for one of my daughters & she loves it! I sure would love to win a set of these Contempo utensils. God Bless You & Your Family.

Contempo. My kids and i have been looking for a good recipe for onion rings. We found several and they didn't care for them. Ones out of the stores, most were tasteless. Your rings look real good and i can't wait to try them. Thanks so much. God bless y'all.

I love number 1 how you always put God first. I try to do that and I do fall short of God. I am human and I feel like I always let Him down. I pray to Him everyday, several times a day. Thank you for your inspiration. Number 2 you cook just like I was raised on. You are so sweet and explain things so well. I have tried some of your recipes and they are so good. I pray you are on the air a very long time. I am very happy you are going to be doing this full time. Thank you again for your videos. May God bless you and your family.
