The A-9150 is a 30w integrated amplifier from home theater giant, Onkyo. Given everyone's focus on home theater, would they still make a decent integrated amplifier? The audiofool finds out, and compares it against the Schiit Ragnarok and Cambridge Audio CXA80.

I purchased this Onkyo A-9150 over the YAMAHA A-S301 for the same price. I can tell you that the Onkyo amplifier is significantly better built, better sounding, better DAC, More Digital inputs, etc etc. Even better than the YAMAHA A-S501. Not until you get to the YAMAHA A-S801 are you really getting any competition from Yamaha. Of course now the YAMAHA is more powerful. However, for normal listening volumes the Onkyo is a much better amp. Yamaha seriously needs an update.

Great review! You describe the differences of the units very well and are very useful. I also have the 9150 and agree the dac is not very good but decent external dacs are cheap now. As an amp it is great! Would have loved to see how it compares to the cxa60 being fed with the same external dac to compare the amps! Onkyo does make the a9110 for cheaper without the dac so that is definitely the better deal. Also cambridge audio just released the axa series which is more comparable to this price wise. That may be an interesting comparison for you to look at next! Thanks for the great reviews! Keep them coming!

Thank you. I was not able to compare it side by side with the CXA60, but I have heard the CXA60 multiple times and is not better than the CXA80 (no matter what Whathifi says). Also, I would just like to clarify that the Onkyo 9150 is a different beast altogether from the A9110, and A9130; this is a much better amp than those. As for the AXA, it might be something I would review in the future.

@@TheAudiofool hello, thank for work, if I understand you consider that the Onkyo 9150 is ""really much better than Onkyo 9130". I'm surprised because I contacted some shops in France and Spain and all adviced me to get 9130 ( for them the 9130 has better amplifer. As to the sound no différenciés in both, however, considering prices the 9130 seems to be more interesting .( Don't forget that 9130 and 9150 can be used in bypass adding a home cinema amplifer. So fo you, you obtain better sound from the 9150 compared to the 9130‽ Can you listen easy with your ears‽ Thank you

But from my experience this is a really great amp. For the price I just don't think you can do too much better. It "only" has 30 watts, but it doubles into 4 ohms for 60 watts -- whereas something like the Cambridge AXR-100 isn't even rated into 40 ohms.

I love this amp. If you don't need A/B speakers then 9130 is almost the same thing. It's amazing how much power it has with just 30W rating. It's driving my large floor standing speakers at loud volume without losing control. The only issue is digital input which has some compatibility issues at highest sampling rate.

I'm curious about this one. Looking at the Denon 600NE, NAD 316bee, Marantz 6007, maybe this... Something around 500ish that will go well with RP600M, and do a lot better than my cheesy 2001 $199 Sony budget surround sound amp, but that is also available. When I look at that transformer that is larger than most avr 1000w systems, i'm left thinking that this amp is class a/b? Can't seem to find any info on that. Also, the AK would be a bad pairing with class a amps based on AK's own documentation for the intended purpose of that DAC, which is to provide a "analog sound" on class D amplification. So, If it's class a and AK, then it's probably smeary and glossy sounding. strange choice if that's true. oh, and the other thing that makes me think this could be class A is those "SPectraModules" inside. They have a similar stated purpose to what NAD does with their "Quartz Bulb" design, to give a lower powered Class A a better response in dynamic and punchy music.

Hi, what is your budget and what type of music do you like listening to? Do you have a preferred sound signature (e.g. neutral, warm, v shaped)? At the cheapest level, i'm quite happy with a cheap class D from topping or smsl and some elac db6.2s, but let me know your budget. As for A9110 vs A9150, the difference in price corresponds to a difference in sound quality as well, the PMA600NE is not a bad performer but i'd rather save up for an a9150, or cheap out, get the class d i mentioned and pour everything else on the speaker.

@@TheAudiofool The Audiofool Thank you for your response ! I listen to various kinds of music fro classical, acoustic, jazz to blues, funk, rock and some electronics. My room is around 15m2. I am musician myself so I expect from my stereo to sound natural, with details and good representation of all frequencies but not sounding artificial and thin. My old Acoustic Energy Aegis One which are decent pair of monitors need upgrade anyway... Prices in Poland are very different but approx. I have up to 700$ to spend on amp and speakers (plus DAC if needed). I did research and have some setups on my mind but I would be grateful to hear hints and suggestions from you:) AMPS up to 350$ - Onkyo 9110, Denon PMA600, maybe old good NAD C326BEE, Yamaha A-S501 or pricier to 500$ Marantz PM6006, Rotel A10, Onkyo 9150. SPEAKERS - Wharfedale 225, Monitor Audio Bronze 2 (a bit nasal sound?) Heco Aurora 300, Mission QX-2, Kef Q150, Elac B6.2 (I heard that Elacs need to play loud to sound good, is it true ?) a bit pricier Dali Zensor 3, Dynaudio Emit 10, B&W 607 ? Or other you could suggest and match with appropriate amp ? is it reasonable to invest more in speakers and spend less on Topping MX3/SMSL AD18 (BTW which is better option?) or :) last question, I promise! I was surprised how well considering the price (440$!) Edifiers S2000 mkIII active speakers sounded. I know, too lots of things... but I hope to hear from you soon! have a great day!

@@KonradSkowronski If you liked the Edifiers, then there's no need to look for something else, just make sure you listen to the Edifiers for a while to make sure you really like them. If you really want to go down the route of separates, most of the time, you should spend the most on the speakers then the amp, then DAC, especially with your budget where the speaker will have the greatest influence on the sound. then if you still want, you can upgrade your amp eventually. Of the speakers you mentioned, I like the Elac and Dali the most, though I've not heard the Heco yet. Have you heard any of these speakers and did you like them? As for mx3 vs ad18, i would go for the topping mx3.

@@TheAudiofool Thanks! I appreciate a lot your approach, that you honestly share your experience with your audience. I have not heard these speakers in person yet, only via internet, including your channel:) So far I think I like Elac 6.2 most (in this price range) but I read they need to be played loud to show skills and demand a lot of current, is that true ? My friend has some Klipsches but I didn't like it. Sounded very bright and thin, maybe bad amp match. You are right, I will put more $ in speakers, buy some temporary amp and upgrade later. I just need to compare in person Elac 6.2 with let's say more expensive Kef 350/150, B&W 607/606 or others rivals and decide. Apart from that what is your fav pair of standmounters in this budget territory? (I know you probably answered that questions many times, but I havn't red all you comments yet ;) )

I'm interested in this Amp, as I'm looking for a Power Amp to use with my NAD c165bee Pre-Amp and don't have that much money to spare at the moment. Rather than buying a used poweramp, the Onkyo appeals to me, since you still have a standalone fully integrated amp to build another system with, once it's replaced with a better power amp. It'd would have been nice if you also reviewed its use as a power amp, since not many integrated Amps have Main Ins nowadays. I assume the use of an external Pre-Amp would change its sound characteristics somewhat from the "typical Onkyo sound" one often reads about (provided the Pre-Amp doesn't sound to similar). And most importantly, how does one activate the Main In mode? The Onkyo A 9130 has a button for it on the front panel but the A9150 doesn't.
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
Why use the pre-amp at all, if you already have the integrated anyway? I say that though, as I'm not really a big NAD fad. In any case, if you still want to, the Main In, is a selectable input source so you just need to switch it to Main in, similar to switching to Phono, D1, CD, etc.
@39mdg92
@39mdg92 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheAudiofool Ok I was wondering about that since the Main In doesn't have an input LED on the front, as far as I can see, so how does it show its activated? I'd prefer to use my pre amp, since I like its sound, it has got an excellent dedicated headphone amp and a great phono input stage. Also it uses the same power supply as is used in NADs high-end M Series Pre Amps and a lot of the same circuitry and is built rock solid. It also cost twice as much as the whole Onkyo integrated, so, without having the opportunity to try it in direct comparison yet, I'd assume the NAD dedicated Pre Amp will do a better job than the integrated pre amp of the Onkyo at its price point. I believe you benefit more from an expensive pre amp than an expensive power amp, since distortions are more noticeable when they affect the signal while it's still at a low voltage and are then amplified. Also I got the NAD with the intention of separating pre and power amplification for the flexibility it gives you in system matching, so going back to an integrated would defeat that purpose. Thanks for the review and the answer to my question.
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын

Does "AC" stand for "Audio converter" or something else?
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
If you mean the DAC, it stands for Digital to Analog Converter. It's what converts the digital signals from Tidal/Spotify/CDs/Flacs into an Analog form that the amplifier will then send to the speakers.

Hello,audifool I have onkyo 9150 few years and noe q acoustics 3050I, I recently burn my speakers as it seems that power of amp was not enough ,it hapens with amp at 12 o clock I think ao I am pissed of now hehe. Anyway because of that I want to change to amp to something with more power.The thing is I need one with preouts for my av receiver in home theater.I can not find anything that not cost cca 1500 euros.I am now thinking to buy new dac Sanskrit 10th MKⅢ cost around 150 dollars.Do you think it will improve the sound enough so I will forgot that I need more power haha.If you need some other proposition let me know.I need a dac with mqa and will use it with google chromecast.Thank you very much,greetungs from Croatia.

hi, what do you mean by burn my speakers? 12oclock is like only halfway through the available volume. How big is your room? The SMSL dac is okay but for MQA, i think you need an MQA capable streamer as well. You may want to try the bluesound node which has a decent DAC as well as being MQA certified. That said, I personally dont like the sound of MQA as it sounds fake to me, but feel free to experiment around.

@@TheAudiofool So I got node 2i and it is huge improvment over the chromecast audio.The hights,mids and bas is better there stage is more wide,the sound is more involving than before.I put node at fixed volume at 90% of power so the onkyo can have less work on amp the signal.I think I burn my speakers as I was changing the source signal all the time and not the one in amp.Now with this seting my amp is on 11 o clock.

Hi. I've KEF Q350 speakers and what amplifier would be better, Denon PMA-800AE, Marantz PM6006 or Onkyo 9150?

If you don't have a large room, I would go for the Onkyo A9150; otherwise the Denon then the Marantz.

@@TheAudiofoolHie, thank you for your answer. I have jsut eceived the onkyo A-9130. Im really really impressed. I did not expect such a real quality. I Compared ti to another expensive amplifier at home , three more expensive and We preferred the the Onkyo. I would really like to test the onkyo a-9150 but according some revues and shops I contacted , they adviced me to stay on the Onkyo A-9130. Some reviewers , tests, agreed on the fact that the Onkyo a-9150 should be over the ONkyo A-9130 but they found none differencies in quality sound, only in the dac and connectivity but comparing prices the Onkyo 9130 is really more interesting. For you, did you find a real difference in quality sound in favor of the Onkyo A-9150?

pare...yong comparison mo is a review of the Cambridge amp more than the Onkyo...like comparing a Nissan Sentra with a Lexus 450...of course that is a given a 4 times more expensive item will usually outperform a cheaper item most of the time. Why not compare it to the Marantz PM6006, Yamaha AS 501, 701, or even the 801, I think more in the same field...a Mark Levinson amp will trounce a Cambridge amp all the time...it has to pare.....

@@TheAudiofool How can you like the Onkyo better if the CXA80 sounds better? Explain. Also, I currently use CXA80 to drive ATC SCM-11 speakers, what amp do you think I should use? I'm thinking maybe Hegel H90.
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
@@Taffy84 If you use the built-in DACs, the CXA80 will sound marginally better than the Onkyo A9150. However, if you use an external DAC, the Onkyo sounds much better than the CXA80, plus it costs less; less enough to be able to buy the Onkyo AND a better DAC, that would make it better than the CXA80. As for your ATC, what do you want to improve? But yes, the Hegel H90 is a good all around clean sounding amp.
@Taffy84

@@TheAudiofool I just want to improve the overall SQ but the amp has to also contain a decent DAC, which the Hegel does.
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
@@Taffy84 Then the Hegel should be a good choice. Great bass and very clean sound, though with the ATC they're going to sound very neutral, which will give you a lot of microdetails but at the cost losing a bit of excitement compared to the CXA.
