Just a suggestion- you could fill all but one of them up and use that one as a compost bin for a few months - I did this in a cinder block bed I put on top of my very old drive way with a little soil to basically cover the compost up and after my bed was fairly full I topped it off, and that bed has just done a ton of work for me for 3 years.

Putting trunk logs and large branches (Hugelkultur method) on the bottom helps consume the space. You will have to add soil over the following years as the material decomposes, but it saves on the initial fill.

I tried this once, but giant red ants seem to have made a nest inside the logs. So be careful in South Florida. It may depend on the species wood and the size of the logs.

It is looking good. But I wanted to suggest to you something that is very important. Invest in a good back brace. We do a lot of lifting. I don’t do any gardening without it. Take care of your back.

I put in cut tree limbs, cut up trunks, plant matter and then kitchen scraps then compost then topped bagged soil and of course used mukch to top it off.

I was surprised you didn’t use the tree trunk, is there a specific reason why? What I have done is put larger trunks on the very bottom, and then thick branches, then sticks, and then leaves or compost before putting in soil.

LOL! Exhaustion and hunger fogged my mind. While taking down the tree was just a couple of minutes in the video. It was hours of work. So when the guys took down the tree, I just didn’t think about it. They did everything in about one hour. So by the time I was done with lunch, the trunk was gone. C’est la vie.

When I filled my 30” raised beds, I did modified hugelculture. I used cardboard, weeds, small branches, unfinished compost, palmetto leaves, bamboo, etc. I didn’t have access to large branches or trees. I only have one large sand pine in my yard. I then ordered raised bed mix from my local nursery. They sell by the cubic yard. The final 9-12 inches of the bed I made my own mix with peat moss, compost, vermiculite and perlite.

I used palm fronds at the very bottom (like the ones you have behind the raised beds). That helped me a lot. I used both the one you have in the background and pygmy date palm tree fronds. Now that we have to start topping off the one we built for the passion fruit, we're using shredded paper, dirt and compost

THAT was an amazing amount of work! You have more Energy than a certain Drumming Bunny! Go, Girl!!! I don't think it was just $27 saved; you saved bunches of material from going into the landfill, and prepared your raised beds for future success because you know what the source of the bottom layer is, and it is going to be all lovely organic humus before you know it. Hard to crunch those numbers, but you are helping save the earth by example as well as by spreading the message! I would have had the guys chop the logs into shorter (2'?) bits, and lay them across the very bottom of the beds (slower sinkage, and good for feeding lots of fungi for longer) and taken the neighbor's oak trimmings, too, depending on the 'disease'. If I had chip drop, mixed them into the branch layers to slow the sinkage, which you are anticipating. The very next layer would have been cheap "Top Soil" or "fill dirt" which would have helped hold all that organic material from breaking down of your yard debris, then water in, before your real garden soil went on top. So for other beds, sub some of your garden soil for cheaper top soil (I warn you, those bags are HEAVY, cause they are dead dirt as opposed to the organic humus material contained in all garden or potting soil) as the first soil layer (if you are still going for the bagged option), and save a little money for more good garden soil for topping off later. That first bed looks so beautiful! Yay!

Here in SWFL it has been So hot. I have been waiting week after week for the temps to drop and stay below the 90's. It ain't getting there fast. However today, with the help of my 9 year old grandson, and maybe my 99 year old father, I will be sewing seeds for my upcoming gardening season. Hoping to make good memories for all. Jacqueline, you are so right about getting those raised beds filled way before you need them. As you said, it takes way more soil than you think! In the past, I have used small logs, sticks and branches, shredded paper and cardboard to help fill my beds. Happy gardening!

We used tree logs, branches, leaves we had on the property in our raised beds 2 years ago, just this year I added my homemade compost to the beds from sinkage. Those tree trunks are invaluable.

My husband and I are at the point where we have pallets of compost sent to the house😂 We might look crazy, but the extra financial cost does pay off in the end for us. That's not including that we are getting better at growing food😄👍, which helps finances and so much more... So I am on Team Get The Beds Done😄👍 If we are forming teams😂😁. More food, more time and space to learn😊

I'm in Orange Springs, doing what you are doing. Filling my containers with soil, rabbit poop, sand in the bottom then my mixture of soil. Planting Collards, Kale, Tomatoes, lettuce and peppers . Love this weather, we will be 62 Saturday.

I just fill with bagged products, or make my own mix, with coir or peat moss and perlite and vermiculite and then fill and add fertilizers and let it rip for raised beds. Compost is good if I can buy bagged compost because the composting facility here sucks and compost is always full of plastic.

I did this and used new plant material. It was a great excuse to take a large limb off my big oak. I took out a small citrus tree that grew out of a compost pile but only produced sour fruit,(I regret that now as I could've used it for root stock), I took out a Spanish Bayonet, (also regret because it is propagating in my beds), and my neighbor cut a large hedge down to help. It helped fill beds AND opened up the sky above one of the beds. I used a raised bed mix instead of garden soil though. I didn't fill my beds to the top. I want to add to my beds later. The bags of soil are @6 inches high if you lay them down flat. I put them on top of the tree/brush fill before opening to have a layer of bagged mix covering the entire bed. Then we opened and dumped. I have sticks coming through the soil but they'll decom 1:21 pose.

What I have heard is in addition to yard waste you can add the paper you have shredded ie: old receipts, junk mail without plastic windows in envelope, miscellaneous papers and light card board ect. I have been saving for over a year. (My husband is tired of it.) lol I'll try it when it comes time for the raised bed. I will then put in the Florida's sand for fill before the compost. That's my plan.

I use my grass clippings from mowing my yard. I use them for all kinds of things but right now filling beds been using my clippings of grass plus any other stuff I pull as well as tree branches. I keep a compost pile going as well as tree trimming pile which this time of year I chop up and add to beds. But literally months of saving this stuff.

Last day of summer, so this was a great way to usher in fall...it's actually breezy and nice over here in Orlando! Always enjoy watching you guys, and learn what I need to know about our special needs FL gardens. Looking forward to seeing your front yard without the shade now. And even though you only saved $27 by using plant material in the bottom of those raised beds, you are creating good compost, so that's always a plus. And I feel you on those bags of soil; 3 weeks ago I weeded and then mulched our longest flower bed, and it was killing me! (Yes, it was mulch, which is lighter, but this mulch had been sitting for about 8 months and was quite moist, so it was still heavy.....and I'm about 20 years older than you...LOL! Ok, I'll quit whining now!)

Oh, and now that it's cooler here, I am starting my raised bed vegetables; I'm experimenting, because I usually only grow a few veggies in large pots, so I'm going to try 18-gal plastic storage totes with holes drilled in the bottom. I'll use pine bark to fill up the half of them, and then some of the compost I've been cooking for the past 2 years (you should see my worms!) mixed with raised bed soil. I noticed you were using garden soil.....does that perform the same for you as soil specifically marketed for raised beds? (Yes, I've seen your raised bed video, I think, but I don't remember....I'll go check.) I'm going to grow a few more things than my usual cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, and herbs. I want to do peas, carrots, cucumber, lettuces, and we'll see what else....maybe one tub for the Seminole pumpkins, since I love butternut squash!

I posted at my blog of how much I got done. Yes I did that same thing with a double vego beds and attached a trellis. 10 bags x 2 later they are finally filled! I have zucchini growing and my baby tomatoes were added. The other hugs bed with a gate from COSTCO has watermelon, cantaloupe, carrots, two different kinds of pea's, lettuce, green onion squash, pumpkin... But then I am new to North Florida gardening. I''m in zone 9A. You do way more than I do! Wish I was young again! Yes those bags are heavy!

We use those bags for garbage! Do not cut them so you may use them. I sieve all of the bags we buy and find an enormous amount of wood products in them! Use that for mulch around trees. Nitrogen is taken up by that wood refuse...Like your video! Jeff

I filled my beds half way up with free compost from a local horse ranch. They pile the stall bedding/manure in hills at the back of their property. They allow people to come take as much as they want but you have to have your own truck/shovel and load it yourself. Saved us a ton of money.

Looking great 👍 your veggies will love it! Your design is very nice and user friendly. Cant wait to see your little seedlings growing and thriving in there! In NWFL, (2nd year gardeners) we are wrapping up our big garden until Spring. We are still harvesting some, have started clearing beds for overwintering. Started seedlings for Fall garden in smaller beds and containers. Lots Beets and a round of Snap Peas! Over half seedlings are perennial flowers so they will be bigger and hardier for the Spring! There are so many places in our area for free mulch/horse manure and composted material. For free I’ve come to find out. After spending 1000s on bagged soil in my wood beds. Now I’ve moved on to metal beds and I’m going the free route so hopefully it’s isn’t full of seeds and weeds and crap I’m gonna regret lol

Ace Hardware brand soil, compost, potting soil is around $2.50 a bag. I use that to fill my big pots and beds and it does great!

I would cut my losses start filling beds one at a time plant as you go. I use a compost mulch in my beds good combination fills beds and breaks down fairly slow.

Wonderful video as always. I feel like i never plan far enough ahead to fill a bed with yard debris so i usually end up at home depot. I have found they will deliver for about $8 but that's only for Approx 6 of the 2 cubic foot bags. Sometimes you need that extra bit of help. Especially if it's a smaller project.

This is one of the reasons why I don't get raised beds that are more than 12 inches and I utilize my native soil underneath my compost container mix and cardboard that I put in it. I love the super high raised beds, but like you are experiencing the cost of filling it is astronomical.

We had a neighbor get a free chip drop and they had way too many wood chips. So we loaded up our truck with their leftovers and filled up our 4ft high beds halfway up with free wood chips.

Off topic, but...every time I see you wearing those "pretty flip flops" to do hard garden work, I think "man, this Girl needs her some Earthrunners". I highly recommend. I have two pairs so far and absolutely love them. Get em dirty and rinse 'em right off, or even throw them in the wash with my blue jeans. I think you might love them as well. It is cool that the flamboyant (here flamboyán) is giving you lots of chop-and-drop material for the beds. I only just finished the design for my block/concrete raised beds and am starting to wonder how much filling them will cost. I've also been trying to figure out a good tropical tree as a central focal point which I also intend to give "partial" shade since I'll be building where it is usually in the upper 30s for highs most of the year and otherwise they'll need shade cloth. The problem is the "partial". Too much shade will also be an issue.

I didn’t realize how much shade it was giving. I looked at videos from three years ago and realized how much sun I used to get! I’m sad to not get the flowers but I don’t miss the shade. The front yard looks so much more open!

You have probably answered this before and I missed it ,why do you not have a your compost delivered by the yard by a compost company ? Its 60. a yard for mushroom compost here in brevard county. Not delivered because its right up the road from us so we take our truck up and they fill it for us. Takes 7 yrds to do our garden blah if I did by bags sooo very expensive.

yep oldest son came over so stopped the video. You stated about getting soil through your town. We have a mulching soil etc. here BUT I stopped using that years ago because so many people use herbicides :( I am talking about a company that just makes compost. Check on craigslist for compost. people make it and sell it. You also asked at the end that I missed till later LOL What are we up to. Well replanted beets spacecoast here. Planted 3 sunrise sauce maters and 3 suoerbush maters along with white marigolds and borage and asslyum in 25 gal pots. Roma beans, pole beans, and scalrrett runner beans. More zinnia, peas started peas little marvel. Whule the son was here he put together my fancy dancy pea trellis. Those will have lincoln on one side and alaska on the other. Soaking sweer peas. Have 5 flats of broc,cabbage and brussel sprouts. Suppose be a colder than normal winter so hoping to have good harvest of cole crops. Oh trying pixe cabbage for the first time planted out 4 10 gal grobags of those yesterday. Starting more flats of seeds. thats about it.

Leaves compact. They never take up much space. Also the branches with the leaves on crest a lot of hollow space. You need to breakdown the branches so they lay flat. To see how much space they take up.

So true! We broke down the branches for the major pieces but the soft green got left on. I should have done what I did last time which is half full with mulch, then branches and then soil.

Lol, you remind me of me 😂. Well, I'm so novice at gardening so my suggestions may not be the best. So, to save money could you use top soil at the bottom of your bed as the first dirt layer over your leaves and branches? Also, try throwing in broken down cardboard boxes in the leaf layer. Worms love those and they take up space. I literally walk around my neighborhood collecting overgrown vines and overgrowth on trees and fences to add to my compost and such. I may live in a bit more rural area than you do so that might be easier for me but you could try that. Someone suggested using one of your beds as a compost. I think that's a great idea. Try setting up one of those no turn compost piles with the aeration pipes in it. I have been wanting to try that. I'd be interested to see how that works for you.

Why don’t you buy in bulk by the cubic yard and have it delivered or rent a truck for $20 and go pick it up instead of the expensive based stuff?

The last time I did it was basically saw dust, so I was gun shy. But Tammy just sent me someone she used and she lives in St. Pete. So I’m using them for the rest and I’ll use the last of the bag soil to just put on the top.

You go girl. Question what about getting grass clippings and leaves for filling beds as well, I know we can get tons of oak leaves in January/February in St Pete. think Ill do new beds in March.

Glad you didn't get knocked off the ladder. I try not to put green stuff in the raised bed for filler. I heard it sucks the nitrogen out. Not sure if it's true or not.

I was able to fill 5 - 8 x 4 x 12 beds with soil/compost from my local landscaper for about $450... it may seem like a lot of money, but if I had purchased bags at Lowes or Home Depot it would not have been possible financially, as the soil I wanted was almost $10 a bag for 2 cubic feet.

This seems like a perfect project to buy soil from the St. Pete yard waste sites! One cubic yard of their soil builder is $15, and they'll deliver for a fee. I think 2 cubic yards would easily cover the rest of those planters... filling them all up for ~$40. Last time I bought soil builder it looked basically exactly like that bagged garden soil you're using.

Fastest is to buy compost and put in the holes when you transplant.

Royal Poinciana trees are considered “signature trees” in St Pete for those unaware. Generally “protected” and can take some special steps to remove in this city. I have two live oaks (protected trees) that are not super pretty and simply make a mess in the back yard. I’d love to have more room for fruit trees and such, but almost all arborists that have looked are too concerned to take them down. So, I’ve embraced them, like their shade in the heat, and am stuck getting fruit trees that I can keep in containers so they can be moved around if needed.

I’ve never heard of that for poincianas. 🤔 I know that they protect oaks and pines (well at least used to until that state law passed). I love that you are embracing your oaks.

Oh I see! Thank you for sharing!!! 😊Based on this we would have been good because ours wasn’t a historic tree nor a tree with the required diameter. I planted the poinciana… 5 years ago I believe. I hate that it didn’t work for that location but in the long run it will be better because we’ll get more natives in. Thank you again! 🥰

I’m going to buy a few yards of baseball diamond clay next year. Josh Jamison at Cody Cove Farms has talked about it and David the good. Less drainage for the raised bed and holds on to minerals.

It doesn’t make enough. So I use it sparingly. But it is good for using when I put my baby plants in ground.

That was alot of work but your yard will benefit from the light (your electric bill next summer may not. Lol). Have you started onion and brassica seeds yet? Im not far from you on the other side of the skyway and was curious. I tried onions but they were a fail. Probably too 🔥.

You might have saved a little more if maybe the arborist would’ve mulched the trimmings or if you were to let the trimmings dry so you will know their real volume.

That would have been awesome! Because of some changes in St. Pete MOST don’t much anymore and don’t even have the equipment. One arborist explained it was due to the changes to the brush and mulch program. It easier for them to move through jobs quickly because they can just pick up the pieces and take to the city for a low amount. So they get more money by moving through jobs. This group didn’t have a mulched.

big logs and pieces of tree trunk are key. I have 5 Birdies raised beds and filled all of mine that way. Also, Miracle Grow 👎you will see a difference in the beds with Kellogs soil vs miracle grow. better overall soil health with organic soil.

Might have been cheaper to get a few cubic yards from a local supplier and then wheelbarrow it from your driveway to the backyard.

Do you by any chance sell the Poinciana seeds? I would love to have one or two trees in my front yard. Right now I have oak trees and they seem to be dying. I’m not going to have a garden in the area so they sound perfect

It is a bazillion trips! Tammy just sent me the name of a new soil company that she used in the area and that’s what I’m going to do! 🥰 The last company I used had bad soil.
