The River Line (stylized as River LINE) is a diesel tram-train Interurban light rail system in southern New Jersey, United States, that connects the cities of Camden and Trenton, New Jersey's capital. It is operated for New Jersey Transit by the Southern New Jersey Rail Group (SNJRG), which originally included Bechtel Group and Bombardier. Now that the project is in its operational phase, Bombardier is the only member of SNJRG. The River Line is so named because the path between those two cities runs more or less parallel to the Delaware River.
The River Line stops at the PATCO Speedline's Broadway station (Walter Rand Transportation Center) and the NJ Transit Atlantic City Line's Pennsauken Transit Center, allowing passengers to transfer to and from these connections to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ~Wikipedia

@@timosha21 Road running isn't an unheard of thing, it actually used to be quite common. It stops at red lights to avoid being in a crash, which i would say is a good thing.

@@carkawalakhatulistiwa a freight line also uses the tracks the river line is on and the electric wires would get in the way of freight operations. That's why most passenger train lines aren't electric in the US. Also almost all tracks owned by freight companies and not the government like the highway system. It's terrible.

From 1958 to 1967, diesel streetcars ran in Sapporo, Japan, but due to electrification of an unelectrified line, those cars were remodeled to electric streetcars except for a couple of them and an unremodeled car has been exhibited at Sapporo City Transportation Museum (temporarily closed for renovation).

Unique light rail line using diesel power. Nice scenery along the Delaware Rivet. This follows a former commuter rail line. I've ridden the River Line many times and enjoyed the ride. Thanks Tim for sharing. 😀♥️♥️

I love these light rails. I just wish they weren't so loud in the interior. This is the longest light rail line in the Garden state, followed by our Light rail system here in Jersey City and the light rail in Newark is the shortest.

SEPTA operates on the Northeast Corridor (former Pennsylvania main from Washington DC to New York City) from 30th street to Trenton

These are customized Stadler GTWs for those who didn't know. Designed to traverse like a streetcar and operates like a regular GTW on a mainline for it's railroading segment, which is also why it has a Graham White e-bell for a gong. It's literally you're normal American light rail vehicle but with diesel and no electrical catenary power

This "Custom" GTW Is from Stadler it is a original Stadler product :) because in my country in germany Stadler gtws are on the "Usedomer Bäderbahn" in Service and on Our "Heidebahn"

Tim I’ve been on this train many times in the past and I will tell you it’s quite a ride and it’s quite the alternative from having to go on SEPTA through the northeast side of Philadelphia up to the Trenton and I’m in NJ the whole time. Though there are certain parts of Camden that are not nice though I’ll just say that much.

The BART system in the San Francisco Bay Area has an extension of almost 10 miles that uses diesel light rail trains. Extension starts at transfer staton about a quarter mile past the Pittsburg Baypoint BART station. Regular 10 car BART trains leave the PIttsburg Baypoint station and travel the short distance to the transfer station. There they change tracks and align on a platform that accommodates the entire train. On the other side of the platform will be the diesel light rail train. It may consist of either one or two unit cars. Only way to get to this transfer station is via train. The diesel trains then service two stations, Pittsburg Central at Railroad and Antioch at Hillcrest. Travel time on the diesel route is only 10 minutes. Each of the diesel trains has Diesel engines located in the center section. Passenger can walk the length of the unit but the center section with the diesel unit has two sets of closing doors that help isolate the noise from the engines. The route runs in the medium of Highway 4 on rails anchored onto slabs of concrete. Originally this extension was planned to use the regular BART trains. It was found, however, that cost was cut in half by using the smaller diesel trains.

I’ve ridden the extension just a few times. Impressive during rush hour when trains goes 60 mph while the rush hour traffic on the freeway bottlenecks. Going in the direction of San Francisco the wait period for the transfer is over five minutes whereas in the Antioch direction the wait time for the transfer is only a couple of minutes.

I'm ok with the light rail, but calling it eBART while using a more polluting source just doesn't sound right to me. Why Didn't they use a battery powered train of some sort, especially in a region that's highly intent on moving to electric transportation.

It's a fascinating train because it is both a street runner and it shares tracks with freight trains. I've never ridden it even though I ride NJ Transit all the time.

Interesting how the diesel engine is in the middle with a walkway through it between the two tram cars. Looks like it can be driven from both ends so it doesn't have to be turned around. I saw this briefly in another video from someone who was traveling by train and transferred in NJ at the station where the River Line ends, but it's nice to get more information.

There are some other tram-like systems using Diesel power around the world. There is that weird cable-car-simulation in Portland/Victoria/Australia, which is supposed to be an old Melbourne Cable car and runs on Diesel Power. Then there are the Tram-Trains in Kassel, which have both DC-power and Diesel engines. And the tram in Nordhausen has Rt. 10, which runs on a narrow-gauge railway to Ilfeld, also with diesel power. It uses 17-metre long Combino trams, and the engine takes up most of the low floor area in that tram...

Brasil and parts of Europe have DMU light rail trains. Although electrification is improving. All Northern Ireland railways and Translink buses are Diesel (including the Belfast-Beal Firste 'Glider' BRT) My city's S-Bahn is all diesel with 'Sprinter', Express Sprinter, HST and IET's - though the Class 800/802's are Electric and diesel they don't hit the Overhead line equipment until 60 miles outside London after over 200 miles under DMU power!

much of the line was once the Camden and Amboy and later Pennsylvania RR Now NS When I take my dog to the county park I might get stopped by same train twice....once in my town, Riverside and then the next town over, Delanco.

Weird to think that these GTWs were the first trains Stadler ever built for the North American market. They look so much different than all the other GTWs in America, and around the world. Austin, Texas was the second city in the USA to receive Stadler trains, with 10 GTWs being delivered between 2007 and 2017. Austin’s GTWs look much more like their European counterparts than the Riverline ones do.

These are still first generation GTWs. The rounded design was not available until the second generation. Similar looking railcars also exist in Switzerland and Austria.

Wie have a almost same System in Chemnitz and Zwickau (Germany). One is a tram which rides with electricity on the streets and then with diesel on the mainline. And the other one are normal diesel trains who ride through the city centre on the street before they go on the "normal" train tracks.

I don't know how, but someone did the math and determined that a diesel tram was better value than an electric one. Not very green, though. When the time comes for replacement I'd guess there'll be pressure to put up the overhead wires, or maybe there'll be very economic batteries and inductive charging by then.

Probably less capital investment. Not having to put up wires and install transformers saves a bit of money on construction, and I would expect the purchase price of a diesel tram to be similar to that of an electric one. Running cost is where this decision bites them in the behind: Diesel rail vehicles tend to be heavier than electric ones because the Diesel ones need to carry a big tank of dinosaur-juice and a big engine to burn it in. This means rails wear out a little faster, and your vehicles have worse performance. Then we get to vehicle maintenance. An electric train needs just an electric motor and a pantograph to run, but a diesel train has a much more complex diesel engine on top of an electric motor or complex hydraulic transmission to power the wheels. Unless you only run two trains per day, the electric system is going to require less total maintenance when you include the trains, the trains/trams are going to last longer.

@@timosha21 You're again adding weight and complexity to the system for little benefit. The shelf life of your vehicles now becomes dictated by the life of the batteries, making it significantly shorter, and the vehicles become more expensive to buy in any case because batteries aren't that cheap. All so you can save on putting up wires over half of the line? That seems like a needlessly compromised solution, what's so problematic about just putting up tram wires over the entire route? With modern installation they are barely visible in the streetscape, definitely less visible than heavy rail OHLE. The poles can be built in such a way that they look the same as lighting and/or traffic light poles, they could even have street lights attached, thus removing the need for separate lighting poles.

Motorak (basically thesame) were very popular in Czechoslovakia, as suburban trams... also, see the midlands railway "tram", not to mention pacers and the many slightly heavier but similar sized "BMW-Wanman series (1-man)" trains in existence in Japan

That also has something to see the GTW ́s as a tram. For me in Berlin, they run as RE line 6 between Berlin and Wittenberge as Prignitz Express. Now a question about the tracks: are they actually welded?? That gets when driving over as if they are just lyinglled. Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven

I mean they have something similar in Zwickau, Germany (and other cities that have the "Zwickau model") that have regional diesel trains run on tram lines in the center of the city (although the trams themselves are electrified)

This is the goat of metros: It is compatible with the mainline railway, it is flexible as it can run on street without requiring huge station buildings, it is fast and big as it is a train and can reach speeds up to 75 or 100 miles per hour outside of the city, and it is not outrun by buses or even cars optimally.

People keep saying it speeds up past 65 mph. I thought it had a limit of 60-65. I had a speedometer tell me 79 mph. Another said 65 mph. Another article said 90 mph. What's the real speed limit?!

Amazing that the diesel engine isn't very loud, actually being mostly obscured by the sound of the inverters. Thanks for the interior footage. I notice that the passage through the center section is off-center -- how do they balance the center section in the left-right direction? Heavy batteries in the small side?

@@timosha21 I have, but not recently. Have you ever heard of the Patco line? It's an electric train that runs from the Jersey side into Center City Philadelphia. From Lindinwald NJ ( not sure of the spelling) to I think 3rd Street in Philly. I'm actually taking Patco tomorrow morning to meet friends in Collingswood NJ.

@@timosha21 the 08/15 economic crisis killed it , but there is some talks of reviving it but in full electric mode and with some modern tram trains and not 9500 series

Very weird. Wouldn't the capital cost savings of not installing wires be offset by the need to buy a very specific and rare type of train rather than an off-the-shelf model? Not to mention the operating costs of diesel vs electric over time..

No, the line is over 30 miles long and is lightly used. Electrical infrastructure at a cost magnitude in the seven figure dollar range makes diesel more economical.

While NJ Transit owns the trains and railroad, the employees of the River Line are contractors, not NJ Transit employees. Same applies to Hudson Bergen Light Rail. Newark City Subway operators are NJ Transit employees.

Anybody have an idea what that blue flashing is at 5:07? Doesn't seem to be the reflections of e.g. a police car strobe or something... Some weird artifact maybe?

I'm surprised the engine noise isn't louder, like a bus. I wonder why they didn't just go with electric. Also, are these diesel-electric or regular transmission diesel?

Seems strange to only have one set of doors per side per Car, is reminiscent of some other other Stadler designs for mainline trains

Fun fact: Late at night a local frieght train operated by Conrail Shared Assets (Norfolk Southern and CSX in Southern NJ and a few other areas in the Eastern US) goes north along the NJT River Line from the frieght yard in Camden, NJ (Camden Pavonia Yard) paralleling the light rail until just north of Cove Rd. before going on to the light rail to a small yard in Burlington, NJ

It is diesel indeed but its still electric. the diesel part is a generator for the electricity this Tram is powered

It has double track in many sections where its needed already. but the cost to electrify it and automate it is far to great. especially when it shares a right of way with freight trains in some sections.

It depended on the train to be honest - sometimes they were busy and sometimes not - the section in downtown Camden (aside from WalterRand) is usually pretty empty as most people get off/on Walter Rand for connections to Philadelphia
