what is the gist of this game? because i watched for an hour and i still don't have a clue what to classify it as.

So RimWorld is a "colony builder" that markets itself as a story builder. Think of it as a city builder with combat, disease, etc except the entire time you have a vindictive dungeon master throwing enemies at you regularly trying to kill you. Consequences are also "sticky" getting beat up in a fight but surviving can result in long term injuries or death, which create a story to your colony as people come and go, get hurt, etc. you just roll with the punches until you win or lose. (Winning is escaping the hellish planet known as a RimWorld)
