I liked the car’s solution to that left turn - where it drove itself parallel to the other turning vehicles. It was “thinking” in very human-like fashion - analyzing the situation and formulating solutions, even ones that aren’t totally legal. And it obviously made it work! I have been opposed to this tech, but I’ve changed my mind. I’m not about to pay for a self-driving system in my own car, but I’m really liking this robotaxi idea …

Good video; very helpful to know the costs associated. I wish you had gone into more detail about the process of ordering the vehicle via the app and how long you had wait once ordered. I will be traveling to AZ next week and am super excited to try this out! Side note, I live in Chicago and the left turn example you showed was very funny; That's how people drive here in Chicago 'normally' so I'm sure Waymo is 'Wayaway' from ever offering this service in ChiTown!

Thanks! Yeah tried balancing making the video concise while informative but I know what you mean. The app is super easy to use though which is the main reason I didn’t cover too much of the ordering process, and (while this might change over time) the wait was usually around 5-10 minutes for the pickup, but generally on the shorter side. There are also “nests” where Waymos hang out when not in service so if you happen to be near one of those then the pickup can sometimes be 1 or 2 minutes. Glad you’ll get to try it though! Haha yeah drivers around here tend to be pretty non-aggressive so I guess it’s good testing ground, but I’d love to see how it responds in lots of scenarios

This video is a pretty good demonstration of why these things will never replace actual drviers. They're slower than real drivers, handle unpredictable driving situations poorly (often by breaking the law or stopping in places they really shouldn't), and can only operate within specifically mapped areas. If adopted on a larger scale, they would probably not be nearly this clean and would become actively hazardous if road work is done that changes the map situation (something you will quickly realize is more common than you might think if you hop in a car with an old GPS and then try to use it). Moreover, if these vehicles were mass adopted, they would quickly intensify traffic gridlock in major urban areas which also makes them even more hazardous to ride in. And, when these vehicles are in accidents (especially when they do not have passengers inside), there isn't anyone to help in an emergency and they also often handle accidents poorly (which ends up causing even more damage). The chances of these things becoming street legal basically anywhere in the country that has a city government with half a brain is just about zero.

Looks like it may need to be all cars in the system so that they work together. Perhaps the way to fix that turning problem you had, will require the car to quickly notify the office of a problem so that a person can remotely fix it. The problem could have been fixed by allowing the car to just pass the intersection, and turn around later, or use another route.
@sam-beige
@sam-beige 11 ай бұрын
Yeah I was really hoping it would just go through the intersection and turn around later but it was pretty stubborn. I saw in a Waymo community thread that it might be a known issue, but hopefully they’ve fixed it by now. I’ll have to keep testing it to find out 😂

Waymo to me seems like it has a software problem, like it's not really thinking but just following premap and hard code. Tesla on the other hand seems like it struck gold with their AI learning and car looks like it's actually thinking, you can sometimes see split second decisions it makes to follow the rules but also with them follow the flow of traffic that isn't always perfect and predictable. For now Tesla has some problems that Waymo managed to fix with tons of sensors but with how much it has improved in the V12 I honestly believe it's a matter of time before it's better than a human at driving with just the current camera only setup.

I've watched all the JJRicks Waymo videos, and I'm surprised (and disappointed) at the awkward left turn. Usually, when Waymo is going to make a left turn it gets into the left lane well ahead of time. Since it has the map programmed, it should have been able to use an alternative route when it found itself in the wrong lane. I know it doesn't yet use freeways.

Nice job on this video, Sam. I'm very interested in autonomous cars and trucks, and keep up on the many development efforts of companies trying to be the first to crack the driverless ride hailing market. Frankly, I don't think Waymo will be among the winners. Waymo's strategy and technology is not economically viable, in my opinion. The company is losing billions of dollars each year with no end in sight. How long will Alphabet's patience last? The only way Waymo can become profitable is to massively scale up their network. There are good reasons to believe that scaling the system will be extraordinarily difficult due to the high cost of their robotaxi hardware, the high cost of creating and maintaining the necessary lidar high definition maps, and their inability to achieve the reliability needed for general purpose autonomous passenger vehicle service. That level of reliability cannot not be achieved without extensive application of the latest AI deep machine learning technologies, a means to collect massive amount of training data, and Waymo management's willingness to acknowledge that their system is at a local maximum and will have to be redesigned.

My humble opinion: I trust the TECH will get there, and they'll be a great replacement for Uber and Lyft and taxis. BUT, the issue is it's still just a car - what would really benefit cities is public transit. Unfortunately, this will be used as an excuse by the car industry to lobby the government against new public transit, because GM and co will be the ones selling these self-driving cars, factory-modded or otherwise. I think this will be a step backwards and antithetical to having more walkable cities.

As an Uber driver, I think it's great. It will take all the rides I will never take and never actually mind having its time wasted. You can probably get away with having sex in the back, leaving all kinds of trash behind, smoking/vaping, and you're maybe even unlikely to get charged for the more egregious instances where technically you've put the car completely out of commission after a night out, but who will know because no one appears to be cleanliness monitoring. Really not your problem. Not to mention, it doesn't have the concern of out of pocket maintenance, personal liability insurance, commercial insurance costs taken out of the fare (clearly minimal here from your displays), or gasoline. The company rightfully takes care of all this like it should. It will never mind being yelled at and will not hesitate to drive how it likes regardless of safety. That I particularly dug. What's more, I only get the profitable rides because the marked zones are so small, which is terrific. Maybe we can get it to go to concert venues and not leave you if you take too long to meet it considering it probably has other requests. That being said, I'm in Los Angeles and there's no way this will be available any time soon. The important thing here though is you never needed to tip. Great video! 👍
