Onnik Dinkjian, 89-years-old, remains America’s most renowned Armenian folk and liturgical singer. He has preserved Armenian folk songs from the villages of Anatolia in Eastern Turkey, especially in the unique dialect from his Diyarbekir ancestry. Onnik's son, Ara Dinkjian, inherited his father's love and passion for Armenian music. Together, Onnik and Ara are joined by an ensemble of outstanding instrumentalists: Tamer Pinarbasi (kanun), Ismail Lumanovski (clarinet), Pablo Vergara (keyboard), and Engin Gunaydin (percussion).
Presented in collaboration with the Library of Congress and the 2018 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

I've known Onnik since I was 4 years old. My family was vacationing at La Cascade resort in upstate NY I think and so were the Dinkjians. I've seen him perform dozens and dozens of times in person at the various dances and KEF's around New England and beyond!.... We LOVE Onnik!!! the Man.. The LEGEND!!! So blessed to have him continue to share his amazing talents with us still!.... Hats off also to the rest of the band... and Ara as well of course ! Hopa ~

Thank you for your kind words but some things must be stated here for what they are . The city you call Diyarbakir /kurdistan WAS , IS , AND ALWAYS REMAIN what it was built to be DIKRANAGERD by the Armenian King Dikran of the ARMENIAN KINGDOM 2100 YEARS AGO! In the ancient times where neither mongol turks nor kurdish tribes had any idea about Armenia and Armenians . Armenians being christians were always inviting and kind to all nations and that was their END! Tatar mongol turkic invaders converted our land to ottoman turkey and promised to kurds some of our lands where we peacefully had accepted your people too. The sad truth is that kurds collaborated with the turks in the genocide . We may have forgiven you but the TRUTH MUST BE TOLD so that it will never be repeated again! May Jesus rest the souls of all slaughtered Armenians and keep all people away from their past mistakes.

Diyarbakir is a Kemalist deformation you should use the correct form as Baron Onnik always does "Diyarbekir" not baqyr. Besides, it is not Tigranocerta. Dikranagerd which was built by the Armenian King Dikran is another city, it is not Dİyarbekir. There are two candidates for Dikranagerd some say it is Arzen in Silvan and some say it is another ancient site in Garzan river valley. It is not the modern city of Diyarbekir. The history of Diyarbekir and its name is well known. It comes from the first Muslim residents of the region the Arab Bekr tribe. Diyarbekir means the place of Bekr. When Kemal learned this, he attacked the city's cultural legacy and dared to rename it Diyar-baqyr which is so ugly and insulting. We should avoid using his satanic version. Onnik Dinkjiyan has always pronounced it as Diyarbekir as all true and honourable residents of the city.

@@yenerbayar - Actually you’re wrong. The real name of Diyarbakir/bekir is Amed/Amuda/Amedia. Bakir is type of metal. Kurds are ancient blacksmiths. From Kawa to Piroz Nahvandi. Media/Mada or Mata means ore in Kurdish and ancient Sumerian. Kurds were given the title Diyar (land of) -bakir (type of metal) due to their history as blacksmiths even to this current day.

I am a kurd from malatya, proud to be from the same city of Hrant Dink, who was killed by the security agencies of the turkish state. Before 1915 they were around my village a lot of armenian villiges. Our house was built by armenians. They were good craftsmen. Without armenians und greeks anatolia has become very poor. A very sad story.
