What is Onomatopoeia? In this English Vocabulary and Pronunciation lesson I'm going to help you learn how Native English speakers use onomatopoeia and help you to practice some new vocabulary and pronunciation in this fun English class.
So....what is it? Onomatopoeia, if you look in a dictionary, is described as: "the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g. cuckoo, sizzle).". How confusing!
Basically, onomatopoeia is when a word sounds like the thing it is. So when you CLAP your hands the word CLAP actually sounds like the sound of hands clapping (a little bit) and when you say the words TICK TOCK, the words sounds like the sound of a clock making the sound tick tock. That is onomatopoeia. Whenever a word sounds like the thing that it is or the thing that it represents. There are LOTS of onomatopoeic (adj) words in English that native speakers use to describe the events happening around them all day every day. From the CLANGING of pots and pans in a kitchen to the PATTERING of rain on windows, all are examples onomatopoeia.
