It was purchased using an RBC Visa card. They offer buyer protection. This is a case of the buyer needing protection from a shady business. Make no mistake, neither RBC or Visa are going broke over this.

Unless you are an expert in gems, never purchase jewelry overseas. Thailand is well known for this. RBC has nothing to do with the lack of vetting on the part of the couple.

It’s not about 3rd world countries it’s about who’s selling them. Bcoz a lot of diamonds 💎 and gold are from those same 3rd world countries. In Botswana you get pure diamonds but buy from reputable dealers not from corner stores. In Zimbabwe gold is all over but buy from real gold dealers not from the street corner

Where is the protection? That is the customer's responsibility to do research on the seller. Buying something that costs a substantial amount should have been done back home if common sense was used. Now, these two got the Press involved to bend over RBC in a televised setting only portrays that the couple is avoiding accountability for their terrible decision. I do not know anything about rings but the one showcased here looks like something you can get at Shoppers Drug Mart or Claire's. In the end things turned out okay and there are strong lessons learned, I hope.

I'm not sure what you don't understand about "buyer protection". Both Visa and RBS offer buyer protection. The fact that you are concerned about a bank is laughable. They only see you as a mark, and someone to get as much money from as they can.

Trying to avoid paying taxes by purchasing stuff outside of the country. Do not buy jewelry or any other expensive items from someone or someplace you do not know. Goes for online as well. For 4 grand might have been able to buy a bridge in the USA or some great swampland in Florida. Caveat Emptor.

actually diamond in Canada are marked very high. a 4k diamond ring cost is roughtly 1/3 of its selling price , that depends on when material, grade,cut,design is being used.

I worked in jewelry store as sales associate for 4 years and I can only recommend to stay away any holiday spontaneous purchases. A deal which is not to be true is generally not true. If jeweler can't show you the specifics ot the main gem(center stone here is a pear shaped diamond) it is very questionable. Especially such a big center diamond in such an incredible price is very dubious.

1:34, where is our protection? If you’re stupid enough and agreed to pay with the credit card, then you must pay back. I was once put in that situation but it was on a very reputable cruise ship company. I declined to buy the ring and I waited to be back home to buy an engagement ring. Wise decision. I bought a beautiful ring from a very reputable store, had the ring appraised before payment. Wife is absolutely happy with the ring 20 years later!

It happens in Toronto as well. Always buy from a reputable jewelry and immediately have it appraised by a certified and independent appraiser. No matter what, when you take your jewelry in for repair, inspection etc, go to a jewelry that does the repair in front of you and not hidden in a back room.

Its either GIA or Gemscan, I don't trust any other 3rd party appraiser. Most Genuine Jewelry stores don't repair on the spot, they send them out to their undisclosed facilities like People's (Zale Corp) repair then send them back to the store, all documented

They should have been more careful in Mexico. This goes ANYWHERE. If you are about to purchase an item of such value, then only AFTER you have vetted the seller very well. Taking the word of one person is just not enough.

I INSIST that this can happen anywhere! Don't blame it on Mexico! One can fall victim to a swindle anywhere. It can happen even in your own home town!
