I was issued the Camillus made version in the Air Force in the 90's. It's still my first grab knife for camping, hunting and bushcraft. The leather for the Camillus version is far superior - mine is still original, oiled from old fashioned sweat and elbow grease and 100% functional. The leather sheath died many years ago, but you can replace it with any common sheath on Amazon - I'm using a Scout Tracker sheath that is amazing. The teeth on the spine, I guarantee will cut through anything from an airplane, a car and just about any commercial vehicle on the road. I believe the blade is better quality on the Camillus as well, as I have no issues with it dulling or not cutting. It batons as well as any other blade I've used. Those who say it's worthless for bushcraft or survival A) didn't receive proper training B) just don't understand how the critter works.

Yeah it works, as I find most knives work if you know what you are doing. Its not as comfortable (to me) as a knife designed for bushcraft, but it does all of the same tasks! The Camillus ones are nice, never held one but I have been told by many that they were superior to the Ontario. Thanks.

This definitely looks like a pretty good night for anyone just getting into Bush craft for sure. Excellent review my friend and as always thanks for sharing.

You're the first one I've heard to mention the true purpose of this knife: An Aircraft Disassembly Tool Once you look at it in that light; the sabre grind, the design of the point begins to make sense for cutting through an aluminum fuselage.

It be awesome if Ontario offered this in the Kraton handle as an option, like the one on their SP-2 blade.

I just bought mine for $36 plus tax on Amazon and just recieved it in the mail. I had to fix the edge a little. And I do have to oil the handle and sheath when I find some oil. But so far it's a solid and nice knife. Surprised me.

These are cool knives. Actually it was my very 1st survival knife back in the early 80s. I broke it but just now baught another one just to put it my collection. But I wouldn't trust it for real survival.

This one of 3 fixed blades that I own. I love this knife. I call it the ‘ ugly knife’, because it’s short and stubby, designed to do one thing only: cut. I didn’t like the light color of the leather handle, so I darkened it with shoe polish, along with the sheath.
@ndubstar5 жыл бұрын
My knife is old from camillus. And it has darkened a lot. The leather too.

Just bought one from Cabelas. Not super amazing but the cool factor is there. Just need to get it sharp and soak the leather. I'm excited to get to know the knife.

I know a couple guys who have that, and both reprofiled the edge, because it is to thick behind the edge, and they cut the top guard off and filed it down. It makes a good bug out blade, good for self defense if god forbid you need that, and once reprofiled, it works good in the woods. Rat tails are prone to snap at the handle, so use it as a knife, not a pry bar, and you will be fine. It is just a guess, but that may be why they keep the rockwell down, to reduce brittleness.

I recently purchased a 67 Camillus knife. The straight edge is similar to a scandi grind, the curved section is convex. Didn't get to try it out yet.

Does the box say “499 MOD? “ I just got one as a gift. I compared it to one I had from the 80’s or 90’s. The new doesn’t have fullers or sharpened clip point. I think this change is either to cut costs given it’s no longer the issue knife, make it more “legal” for places that would consider the sharpened top portion, even though it’s a inch or so, a doubled edged blade or they are using the same blades that are used on the new issue knife that doesn’t appear to have the fuller or sharpened clip point. I think the new one is better regardless. I think they should drop the “saw” back and do only the bottom finger guard. Good review.
@Iridium2426 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah I dont have the box anymore, but it was a new one, No sharpened clip point on it either.

This is a rat-tail tang in that the blade material is considerably narrowed and passes through the leather spacers that make up the handle.
