Ontario proposes referendum on provincial carbon tax

The Ontario government says it wants to hear from taxpayers on the future of taxing pollution in the province.
In an announcement Tuesday, Premier Doug Ford said if passed, the new legislation would give voters a “direct say” over a new provincial carbon tax, cap-and-trade system or other carbon pricing program.
“This new law will guarantee that no provincial government can force a costly carbon tax on the people of Ontario without ensuring their voices are heard loud and clear,” Ford said of the Get It Done Act, which will be tabled in the spring session of the legislature later this month.

Except…. ALL major parties had a Carbon Tax platform in 2021. In fact, Pierre has been campaigning in favour of both a Carbon Tax AND Cap and Trade since 2008. If you’ve vote Conservative over the last 2 decades, you gave a mandate for a Carbon Tax.

Voters should NOT support existing carbon tax legislation because the tax (1) causes inflation (a multiplier effect) in prices of goods and services (2) doesn't reduce gasoline and diesel consumption (3) does not make residents down the thermostat on their gas heaters (4) disproportionally impacts low income earners (5) is itself subject to HST- harmonized sales tax (6) causes a waste of government resources on partial refunds to consumers based on irrational criteria, and (7) provides revenues to the province that are NOT used to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. AXE the damn TAX!

@@W1thcdoctor1987 1). Carbon pricing is not associated with inflation. Contributing less than 1%. The variable most heavily correlated with inflation is the Price of Oil/Gas. …. Know what, I see how this will end. I can quote MIT Sloan which found that Carbon Pricing is the most effective way to reduce COe2 emissions at the lowest cost to society. I could talk about how COe2 emission create massive economic costs that are born by everyone, not just the polluters. An economic model called negative externality. How carbon pricing is a market solution which will reward companies that can produce goods at low emissions and make those that can’t, obsolete. How the PBO Report ACTUALLY says that the Carbon Tax BENEFITS 80% of Canadians with low income households BENEFITING the most….. but….. if we don’t reduce our reliance on fossil fuels….that equation flips upside down by 2030. CPC has been falsely claiming the PBO report doesn’t show a benefit. But again, I know how this discussion ends. So let’s call it a day. I’m retiring in about 4 years. I’m reducing my consumption of gas/oil as I want to ensure my expenses in retirement have as little volatility as possible. I do not want to be tied to one of the main factors that drive inflation. It’s not politics. It’s basic math. So I’m good in my understanding of the economics and implications of climate change. Have a great day.

Ontario roads are broken costing all vehicle owners more money in repairs 😮. Lack of road salt is killing us and putting lots of large trucks in ditches 😮. This wasn’t the case years ago when proper road maintenance was done ✅

A referendum on a provincial carbon tax would be a poll for the federal tax. I would be curious to see the distribution of that vote. It would be my guess that much of Ontario would be more than happy to keep any kind of tax increase secluded to those who vote for them. After all they think they can afford it.

Worth pointing out that Ford’s revenue is up significantly based on the price of gas and the fact the province owns the utilities. And of course, they tax those profits too with provincial tax. If we have a cost of living challenge, why not return the excess profits to the people instead of a political boondoggle of a carbon tax referendum?

Ontario would not have this issue with the Carbon tax had Doug Ford not scrapped Cap and trade. I don't understand why Doug is going on about axe the tax when he could have prevented the Carbon tax in Ontario by leaving Cap and Trade alone. Especially when his government had no replacement plan for Cap and trade. We as a community have to do something to protect the future generations from a catastrophe caused by climate change. Maybe Doug Ford and his gang just don't care about the younger and future generations.
