Carried MK3 in the Navy. SEALs of my era never used them because they're heavy and spot rust in salt water: most switched to custom titanium knives which were expensive at the time. I used the MK3 like a tool, it was a good hammer and can opener. The serrations cut through airframe and thin metals and line. The stainless in the MK3 does not hold a very sharp edge, but it easily penetrates steel. I believe they temper them soft so they don't break for impact use. I had one of the first models and the steel was rust prone and brittle. My service MK3 was softer and more rust resistant: so Ontario improved them. This new model looks great, I will have to get one!

Nice test, I have the Ontario Spec plus version of this knife, the Sp-4, it came from the factory with a similar edge needed work, once there it stays pretty well. It is a good chopper and saw is awesome. I almost bought one of these exact ones the other day, factory edge and sheath caused me to go with the razor sharp Kabar mk1 right next to it.

I’m impressed with that knife. I never try any of these tests at home, I wait until I get to work. But this would be a good knife for many survival uses. Carbon steel is superior if you are not in salt water environments (the Randall knife company told my brother that years ago} assuming of course correct hardening and tempering of the steel, but this knife is one tough knife which means it is correctly heated and tempered. I like the redesigned clip point better than the original.

Great Reveiw Mayor!👍 This one certainly has it's Pro's & Con's definitely a Tank that can take a hiding very interesting Steel choice surprised they didn't go with a H1 Steel being a Navy Blade i suspect cost was the main reason for this , blunt as a Butter Knife from the factory at least that's easily remedied and that Butt Screw definitely needs addressing. Other than that not bad!
@MayorFuglycools8 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's not a bad blade, but I think from the factory the sharpness should be improved. Also, steel choice is not that great, would like to see the return of the 440A. Thanks for watching friend ! :) Mayor Fuglycool

Glad the MK3 passed your tests but I have to comment on your assessment of 420 steel on the basis of the positive experience I have had with Gerber and Buck knives make with this steel. Sharpness of these branded knives has never been a problem. Also, a very different beast but I like my KA-Bar MK1. Thanks for the review.
@MayorFuglycools8 жыл бұрын
Well, 420HC vs 420 is somewhat different. I think that the 420HC is far superior to just standard 420. The Gerber, and other higher priced knives are 420HC, which keep edges sharp longer. The MK1 is something I have been wanting to test, and thanks for the comments ! Thanks for watching friend ! :) Mayor Fuglycool

Thanx for an education regarding to the article.This knife is not constructed as a full tang, the tang is fixed to the plastic handle, then is a vacant place in the handle for app. 1,5 cm and then the hammer is fixed to the handle just by the screw. But still Mark 3 passed the test! Ontario knows how to create a durability!!
@johnstevens15753 жыл бұрын
I think this is primarily a dive knfe and a stabber. The blade is corrosion resistant and the saw is probably better at cutting lines, nets, and wires underwater. Its weighted for pounding and so it sinks without giving away a diver's position. The blade is thick to allow its use as an expedient pry bar. It's a compromise knife, but a better knife for underwater use than its predecessor MK 2 (Kabar) knife.

Truly I think I'd pick up a rock if I needed to beat on brick or cinder blocks. I have the older version Mk 3 Mod 0 I use to dig blunt arrows out of stumps and carry it in a leather sheath (Triple K 6" leather or a Buck 119 sheath) because the metal collar in the plastic (original) sheath runs down the edge in placing and removing. Great knife; sheath needs rethinking. Was my "boat knife" for decades and had cleared props of seaweed and Nylon line picked up that snarled the prop-shaft. Often in urgent circumstances.

Your Honor, you have the greatest knife videos and are very informative! You also are very likable and funny. Now just a comment. I have been collecting Aviation (Military) survival gear for 40 years now. So I do know just enough info to probably get myself in trouble. The saw on the back of those types of knives are really meant for getting out of helicopters and some airplanes in an emergency situation (Read: Crash landings). But, as you have clearly shown, this saw can be used for notching wood for traps (animal and human) if need be. By the way, you didn't show and give your opinion on the sheath it came with. In fact you never do. Not a problem, but maybe in the near future you may decide to test them too? Thank you Your Honor for the cool videos and keep up the great work as I am watching. :)
@MayorFuglycools7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I am glad you love the videos ! I usually don't review the sheaths, because it takes up more time in the overall production. I think that lots of other channels take too much time on the sheath, so Ifigure that I would concentrate more on the blade. Thank you for watching, and stay safe out there friend ! :) Mayor Fuglycool
@bigcladwolfdetecting60178 жыл бұрын
This is like the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" test track but with knives... I wish you attempted to cut the lime before damaging the blade, I bet it wouldn't have cut much better. I also would have liked to see the saw edge perform after all the hammering on concrete and I was hoping you'd unscrew the screw to take the pommel apart. Good video nonetheless. I own the older version of this knife with the pointier tip that you showed in the beginning. A travelling sharpener came by my house one day so I gave him that knife to see what he could do with it - he put a Scandi grind on it and sharpened the false edge as well. Now the blade resembles a Mora knife with more piercing potential. I haven't put it through any rigorous tests though. Subbed.

Ontario and the Navy say this is a dive knife (which I'm sure it excels at) but I think it would make a great boot knife for self defense and light utility use. I'd never use it has a hardcore survival knife myself. I think larger, thicker, blades made out of better quality steel are more suited for survival/bushcraft tasks like batoning. Supposedly there are 3 different knives that were made for the Navy Seals (the Ontario Mark 3, the Cold Steel SRK, and the Sog Seal Team Elite). The best quality one is the Cold Steel SRK in CPM 3V. I've heard they use and abuse the hell out of that knife in BUDS training and it handles it well. It also has much better edge retention than the Sog Seal Team Elite (which is made out of Aus 8 Steel) and the Ontario Mark 3 (made out of 440 A and 420 steel). Real Navy Seals are allowed to carry their own personal knives so many of them don't use any of those 3. Some even carry high end Busse Team Gemini blades. As an avid knife collector of 30 years I researched this topic extensively. Great video by the way !!!

The first pattern mk3 blade is straight up copied from one of the various Ak bayonets including the blade catcher on the back. If have have this knife, you have to take the spring out of the sheath, cut off one of the bends and put it back in or it will dull the edge every time you sheath and unsheath it.
