Highlights of a debate held on Sunday 9 August 2015 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. This was the second in a series of supporting discussions bringing together a variety of expert speakers and commentators to discuss issues and topics raised by our summer season of plays, including The Merchant of Venice, Othello and The Jew of Malta.
Speakers discuss whether Othello can be considered a racist play. The debate drew on our then current production, and examined what it means to stage a contemporary interpretation of the play.

I saw this production, and it's fascinating to hear Onyeka's crystal- clear analysis. I would love to come back to Stratford, but it gets expensive staying there to see two or three plays. Why have you abandoned Newcastle? It was the way I was re- introduced to Shakespeare in the 1990s :-(

It is not racist. Othello was the hero of the play. A general, respected and victorious, beloved and respected by all. Even Desdemona's father had liked him and at the end was angrier with his daughter for deceiving him than with Othello. Othello was the victim of the insane malice of a white man and driven to kill his beloved wife. Like many a white man, then and NOW, would have. I see no racism there.

Very true. But it's important to understand the difference between endorsing and depicting. I don't believe Shakespeare was a racist or that this play is a "racist play." However, I do believe that Shakespeare was aware of the racial stigmas towards Muslims (Moors) during his time in the sixteenth century, and simply wanted to depict the act of racism in his own art form.
