The biggest thing I noticed about Onyx is how much they LOVE their fans. They're very approachable and love the support and praise!

This isn't your typical Ensemble ending flag feature show.... this is a different approach to what we all think we know.... this is amazing cinematography of a floor mat using guard equipment

Create entertaining art though. Sitting through hours of piano driven music in a guard competition can put a crowd member to sleep. Let's switch it up and have some upbeat shows!

It is pretty easy to clean a show when there is virtually no ensemble work. You can call anything art, but can your entire guard throw 7's and catch consistently on the downbeat?

The most concerning statement in this video is, "We could do the same music year after year, and each show can be an entirely different visual representation." That's meant to be a compliment on the variability of the design staff, and their their ability to interpret in multiple ways. Great. What it really points up is that the music is secondary to Onyx, and that the design process is broken. Saying the music is secondary pushes to the side the critical music/visual symbiosis for these shows. It also impairs the central raison d'etre for doing the show itself, and that's meaning. Meaning comes from performing a theme that elucidates a point of view about some aspect of our lives-- the way we live it or imagine it, and which is inspired or influenced by the musical composition. Again, Onyx is so close to breaking through from being circus performers to being true artists-- the only thing missing is the specific thematic meaning underneath what they're performing. And yes, it changes with each year's production.

Jesu Spectre riddle me this. If a piece of art hanging on the wall can be interpreted multiple ways, why can’t a piece of music? In 2013 onyx based Stella Maris off of Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird” since this piece of music has an ethereal sound that helped develop the theme of the show (feeling caged, sadness, destroyed). In 2018 onyx inevitably decided to reuse the piece after the loss of a dear friend to the organization because of the songs similar relevance to the situation. The sound accompanying the shows here has never been secondary. Sleeping Giant is a prime example of that. The white noise of that show contributed to setting Sleeping Giant apart from others because of the rarity of not having metered music and it gave viewers the opportunity to decide for themselves what the core theme was (I personally thought of a dormant volcano or the power of nature, but to each their own) I’m not sure why you have this obsession with constantly trying to pick apart this organization (I have seen your comments elsewhere). What I can say is that it shows how afraid some people are of things that are different or require a bit of thought to make the viewer draw their own conclusions about what they see.

@@kateswift5406 Large scale productions have scores of instructors and backers and infrastructure. If at the end of a season, after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of man-hours, you say it's "up for interpretation", in the professional arts world, that means jail time for fraud. The whole "interpret it for yourself" crutch is a scheme to cover up lazy design. The objective for any legitimate artist is to spearhead a specific, unique, universal message that resonates with an audience and brings them together on an observation about life as we know it or imagine it. There's a responsibility of interpretation with any arts administration. That's what professional production companies do. There's an obligation to refine the observation until it is accessible and resonant and self-sustaining. Experimental garbage is a dime a dozen, and owes an explanation to no one and is forgotten as quickly as a dream. On the subject of music, the instructor said he could keep the same music and interpret it infinitely. That's a broken perception. Of course you can keep the same music for a second production and reinterpret it once or twice. But that's not what he said. He was intimating that the visuals stand alone and can continually evolve, almost separate from the music, and that's just gymnastics bus and truck tour trash without meaning.

Jesu Spectre listen dude you do you but you didn’t deny the comment aboves accusation of you tearing onyx apart. Stop being biased and trying to tear them apart let them create art. You are tearing art apart and by saying that it’s “fraud” to interpret a piece of art is stupid because I see different shows for different meanings for myself. I see it as being trapped inside your own head not allowing yourself to think as freely as you did before. It’s not fraud. We are humans our brains/everything about us is different. Do you know what’s fraud? Onyx isn’t necessarily a fraud. They felt the need to remember their own in their show. And they believed that using last years show was the best. Let them be Get on with your life and do something better other than trying to take down and diminish onyx’s creativity and passion for what the art and passion that is color guard. They aren’t making things look like a circus if anything they are giving people a piece of art that is relatable and can be interpreted in different ways

This is a classic discussion of the technique versus substance. Onyx is focused on technique and empty gymnastic innovation, leaving meaning behind. It's like WGI is learning basic lessons of art all over again. It's absolutely comedic.
