Painting the plastic rails and shiny track makes a big difference to the appearance of the model railway. While building this Model railway shunting layout we have got to the point where we can lay some paint down and prepare ourselves for the next stage of ballasting. A pivotal point as once the ballasting is done we can enjoy the scenic stages of the build.

Hi Tris I find that placing trucking and ground signals before ballasting is easier (just my opinion), nice little interesting shunting layout coming together well. Thanks for sharing regards Barry..👍

If you mix coal with ballast it adds a realistic look of a working railway

For a shunting layout, it’s gorgeous, Tris!! You’re doing a wonderful job of decorating the layout, and it’s getting really interesting to see.

I’ve seen so many others painting their tracks and talking about making sure the points don’t stick BUT I’ve never seen anyone do what you did. That’s a great idea!

I find it interesting to see how a shunting layout is cerated. It demonstrates the use of junctions of different types to control the destination and location of a train.

Another really good episode. Thank you Tris, almost worth buying an airbrush just to do the track!

Hi Tris, I’ve been following the mini layout with great interest, both in the construction of the track but more in the buildings. I’ve been inspired by the yard and I’m going to incorporate a similar one in my new layout. Love the channel and the way you present it 👍

Hi Tris. Great video. I am hoping to really get started on my layout. I have a few things to get sorted out in the workshop, and then I can get started on the trestles for the track. Well done on your small layout. I am taking you advice and doing a little at a time. That way I don't get fed up with it and leave it alone for a long time. Thank you.😊

Surely you don’t want a blinking great 31/33 or even a 25 for shunting rolling stock!!

Loving this series Tris. Great to see your methodology and quality execution. Very good modelling, hoping to learn to be a 1/4 as talented 😂. I'm looking at wiring up my shelf layout, at research stage and sorry but was hoping to benefit from your experience. Ps. Videos on my channel if you want the context. Essentially it runs around the top of my 3 x 3 m cabin on a 200mm wide shelf and has 2 stations either side. My original plan was to have a switch box each. But my question, is it better to have one central box to control everything in your view? I'm not sure what would work best when running. Keep up the fantastic work 🎉

Nicely done. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I had painted the track prior to ballasting on my narrow gauge layout and then weathered the ballast afterwards. However, on the layout I'm building for the children I've simply ballasted the raw track and then painted and weathered the track and ballast in one operation with various shades of grime using an airbrush. I really like the result and it was much easier and quicker overall. I tried out both methods on some scrap track first and results were similar. Incidentally, how are you going to do uncoupling on the layout? On my shunting layout I've chosen to use Kadees with homemade ND uncoupling magnets at strategic locations.

Loving this series! One question - when checking the track after doing the painting would it not be better to test using the shortest wheelbase locomotive have?

Hi Tris, just admiring your shelves of paints. Did you get them all in one go or separately? Also liking the spray gun. Keep up the good work, feeling inspired
