Lyle the reason you recognize rugby elements in our game is because American Football's base game was RUGBY, and a lot of the rugby rules still apply to the game. They've never been dropped or lost from the ACTUAL rules, and any coach worth his while has his players run plays like that in their practice just to keep his players aware of what they can actually do in some situations

And that is also why American football is called football. American football was born out of two sports named football, Rugby football and Association football. So it only makes sense that the derived sport would also be called football too.

Yeah like the 'Line of Scrimage" is heavily inspired by Rugby Union's Scrum.

The rugby style plays are known as Hook and Ladder or "Hook and Lateral" plays. Teams typically run these plays when they are losing and there little to no time left on the clock, and the offense is not in field goal range or needs a touchdown to win and can't settle for anything less. When the clocks hit zero the game doesn't end until the final play does, so doing anything to keep the play alive and pull out the miracle touchdown is the goal. Once the ball has progressed beyond the line of scrimmage, it is illegal to throw the ball forward, so all passes must be backwards or lateral. There have been some memorable moments with this play in both college and the pros and some pretty insane results.

Hook & Lateral... the Ladder was people not understanding "lateral" correctly

BYU-Utah is known as the "Holy War," it's a massive in-state rivalry. Missouri-Nebraska was from 1997...first year in 15 years Missouri had a decent team, and was 1 play from beating the #1 team in the country (I'm still traumatized by that play) Cal-Stanford...runner was pretty clearly down near midfield, but video review wasn't available in 1982. Need to do a video on the Iron Bowl from 2013...the play is called the "Kick Six."

That ending at California vs Stanford in 1982 is still referred to as "The Play". People have attempted things like that numerous times since - some worked but most didn't.

Remember that these are all 18-21 year old drunk college kids storming the field. Not the best decisions being made by people that age boozed up in most situations of life.

"Confusing mess" is a good description of a lot of American football rules, to be honest. But the relevant part of the clock rules is: the clock stops on a score, penalty, the ball out of bounds, or an incomplete forward pass. In college football, it also stops temporarily if a first down is gained (until the ball is marked ready for play) even if none of those apply. So when the USC player fumbled out of bounds against Notre Dame, the clock should have stopped, and the review of the play corrected that. "Illegal lateral": One forward pass is allowed per play, as long as there was no change of possession or kick first and the ball did not go beyond the line of scrimmage (the point where the play started) before it was thrown. Sideways or backward passes (known as laterals) are permitted at any time, and the ball remains live if it is dropped. That last play, because of the illegal second forward pass, did not count. (I am a little bit surprised that there was not a repeated attempt because of the interference by the defending players, but I guess they ruled that the players did not take part in the play, making it a dead-ball foul; the offense's foul therefore ended the game because the penalty includes a loss of down. If the extra players on the field were treated as a live-ball foul, then the penalties would offset and the offense would get another chance from the previous spot.)

Theres a channel named Wheels that condenses a lot of games down to around 18 minutes by cutting all commercials. Very good option to check out some teams & pick your boys. Im a diehard Tennessee fan. Our best game in recent history & must watch tv is Tennessee vs Alabama 2022.

The reason the video got cut short at the end was because the actual broadcast cut out for some reason at that point. However the gold team was ruled to have thrown a forward pass so any penalties afterwards get ignored (I.e., the rest of the team running onto the field)

This is such a hilarious and embarrassing compilation. I never saw that first clip before. Man, it would've been so satisfying to see BYU pull out the win after all of that early celebration by Utah. They had their chances though.

For the last clip with Ball St and Western Michigan it cuts like that as ESPN was having technical difficulties at the WORST time but after like 5+ minutes of discussing the refs didn't count the TD and ended the game because of the forward lateral so Ball St won 30-27

There are lots of full college games here on KZfaq that you can watch. I recommend 2006's "Game of the Century" -- the 103rd meeting of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines, recognized as the greatest rivalry in sports (although it's not a sports rivalry, it's much deeper) and first time they had met as the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the Nation. Plus, the day brought an unexpected emotional subtext. Admittedly I'm somewhat biased, but it really is one of the best games of college football you're gonna find.
@Gutslinger

Game of the Century? I guess that title could technically work, since it's in a different century to the original "Game of the Century". Also, that's not the greatest rivalry. It may be to some.

A good thing to see if you haven't yet, Appalachian State (at the time a team from the FCS. a lower level then the games usually shown on tv) beating Michigan at Michigan Stadium.

I have no idea why they thought the Field Goal try was 'legal'. The play was never _completed._ And that Texas Tech one -- I have to admit, my team, my dad's school, Notre Dame, the students storm the field every time they beat Clemson. And they got into trouble when they did it during COVID because they spread 10 thousand students around a 77 thousand seat stadium for distancing reasons then they're all on the field, and the University President threatened to put the entire campus on lockdown... and everyone gave said President a lot of crap since he GOT COVID from Amy Coney Barrett's daughter at the White House, as did the President of the United States, when no one was distancing either. But anyway, even THEN our guys waited until the GAME ended! Oh and talking about that, 11:30 is what all Notre Dame fans and alumni call the "Bush Push". It's legal now, the Bills call it the Snow Plow, the Eagles call it the Brotherly Shove, but the generic name for it rhyming with our name for it, the TUSH Push, is no coincidence, and it was illegal as Hell then.
@Crush1084

Tush is another word for butt. Unfortunately it is not a nod to Bush. Would've been funny if so, but that is entirely coincidental.

Nebraska and USC would go on to win national championships off of those finals plays. The USC one should have been a penalty; you could not push your player forward at the time.

It’s scary being the band in the end zone! Although I *mostly* understand the game and enjoy it to some degree, I don’t like to watch televised games because of the constant noise. Football, hockey, and basketball are good live. Baseball is boring, IMHO.

A good highlight reel to watch is BSU vs Oklahoma Sooners because it was such an upstart underdog beating such a big power school in a game that no one thought was even going to be a contest. BSU played some really awesome trick plays and beat the Sooners, and everybody was stunned. I'm not even a BSU fan, but as somebody who grew up in Idaho that was a big moment.
