Keep at it! It’s worth the effort. Honestly, if you could have multiple projects on the op1, I wouldn’t have upgraded to the field. But the single project thing is good if you can get your self to finish the song before you transfer it and move on. Good luck!!

Goood stuff man, are you singing into the op-1. Usually when I lay my vocals I’d make it’s own track and layer it. But I’d be too scared to bounce it into a track with all my keys. You given me some ideas now tytyty

I’ve been using the teenage engineering m1 headset thing. It works really well with the field although I think the op-1 field mic sounds a bit better with vocals. It’s just nice not to have to lean forward especially for the long periods of time that I’m trying out different melodies and lyrics. I usually do all the vocals on one track if I can swing it.

Hey, awesome song! I'm new to OP-1 and videos like this really inspire me to want to buy one. Does it come with real instrument samples? Can it do violins and oboes and horns, things like that? Does it even sound good? Or can you import samples of those instruments somehow? Also, I'm completely new to making electronic music. I haven't even bought any hardware or software yet. But is there a good lesson you'd recommend that gives a complete overview of the space, the software, the hardware, the terminology, all that stuff?

I'm not a musician or producer, but I felt this way too, was really attached to the OP1 for a while, but from all the reviews I saw, it's built more towards someone who is already well versed in making music.
@goldfishy

@@themoobeast8149 So I ended up just taking the leap and buying an OP1. I didn't want to wait until I was "ready". And I didn't want to buy a ton of software and hardware and be tied down to a computer and desk. The portability, simplicity, and small form factor of OP1 really appeal to my lifestyle. So far it has been a great catalyst to actually start learning music since it covers a lot of areas. For example.. 1. OVERVIEW: A great general introduction to the OP1 is a video called "Getting Started on the Teenage Engineering OP-1 | Top 3 Tips!" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNyGrdZm3pfalmw.html In 25 minutes he walks you through the steps to make a song using all the main functions of the device. Very good. And there's a good follow-up video too. 2. DRUMS: I found some great KZfaq videos that talk about constructing famous drum beats. If you search for "famous DRUM PATTERNS on the OP-1 sequencer" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7GXY7OmytOxpYk.html he references a book called The Breakbeat Bible. I bought the physical book because it includes a CD with examples. But you can download the book for free if you access 1lib with a tor browser or tor tab in Brave. (just google "1lib tor" and you can find the link easily and create an account) 3. PIANO: The op1 also has a chromatic keyboard which inspired me to actually learn music piano, music theory, scales, chords, etc. I found a course on Udemy that looks really promising and it's highly rated. I bought it on "sale" but haven't taken it yet. It's called "Music Composition with the Piano: Ultimate Keyboard Theory" by Jack Vaughan. Check out the free intro videos from that course. 4. SYNTHS: Also a lot of good youtube videos explaining what synths are and the terminology. Still slowly piecing that together. 5. SONG WRITING: Watching various KZfaq channels where people use an OP1 to construct a song has super helpful. It shows the layering process and creating something more complex. If you search "Hey I'm a dude song" on youtube you can find a famous example. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eax3aMeclq3dgqM.html

The OP 1 is the most inspiring instrument I’ve ever owned by far! It can do a little bit of everything at an arguably, professional level. Everything is pretty easy to understand on the op1 and it’s all one or two clicks away. I often find myself wishing that I had it while I was learning music, because everything is laid out in a way that’s very easy to understand. If you want to learn how to sample and slice, program drums, use arpeggiators and sequencers, use effects, get an overall sense of how synthesis works, record, overdub and mix all at once and have fun doing it, I think the OP one field is the way to go… If you can afford it… You don’t have to dive through menus, which gets in the way of inspiration and the learning process. Music is fun on the OP1! And I think thats the most important thing. it does have a sampler, but unfortunately, it doesn’t give you accurate instrument re-creations. It takes one audio sample and retunes it to every note on the keyboard. You could use the drum sampler and record multiple notes, then slice them up across the keys but there’s probably only room for half an octave or some thing like that. IDK. the sampler is the only downside for me.

@@netneutralmusic thanks for the reply. I am loving it so far and I sampled a piano note and that has been good enough for a fake piano sound. It’s such a joy to use.

Not sure dude. I think the OP1 generally has decent sounding distortion when it’s clipping. It doesn’t sound that bad but I don’t know why yours sounds low volume. It should be full volume when it’s clipping.

Thanks! Yes you can do this on the op-1 too! It’ll sound a little more lofi but the op-1 has a great sound. For my last set up I used a Shure sm 58 with an adapter into a mustang micro then an aux cable to the op1.

It depends. The main difference is that they made a bunch of small changes that make the audio feel hi-fi when the original op-1 always kinda sounds lo-fi. Also, having multiple projects is priceless for me.
