One of the best looking rally cars of all time for sure! And honestly, doesn't this kind of rallying look truly spectacular? We might have improved a lot in terms of stage times but it seems like we've gone backwards in terms of sheer awesomeness?

You can still see one live with a veteran pro on the steering wheel. He bought his 400 back after almost 30 year and does historic championship in Belgium. In fact I think its the first Manta in this clip.

Great cars. I remember when alll Opels had a big following in the UK. Even as late at the early to mid 90's I knew folk hunting down grilles and badges to turn their Astas and FWD Cavaliers into Kadetts and Asconas.

I miss my 1,9 SR Ascona B ;( Most easy to handle and fun car to drift in the winter I ever owned. My next car was a Mercedes 190E 2.0 that was also fun to drift in winter also but the Ascona B was much more responsive and quick.

4S 2410cc "phase 3" With Cosworth "Crossflow" cylinder head, I4, DOHC 16v 275 hp. The civilised homologation from Germany was expensive an a good 130 hp off the Cosworth setup. People started putting in 1JZ/2JZ Toyota Supra, Senator 3.0 CIH, C30SE 24v lumps, Turbocharged, Eaton supercharger's on the Opel Manta an Ascona, GTE, GSI an lower spec models. They handle very well 🔥

I've fallen in love with this car. Looks kinda American, drives sideways like JDM drift machine, but it's made with German precision and soul. Sounds great and looks awesome in rally liveries. And it's an old car, so no electronical systems, only manual gearbox, pedals and the driver. I would love to one a Manta one day.

@Andrew Wilson Our road rally car was a Manta powered Kadette coupe. Everyday shopping car a Manta 2.0. Replaced by a Chevette HSR at the time. Didn't have the cash to buy a Manta 400. I do now but don't need one anymore.

My Kadette C Coupe rally car I built from a fire damaged Manta A (the narrow axle is the same as factory Kadette GT/E) 1.9 L but very light around 750 kg. & Chevette HS springs and dampers. My everyday Manta was a 2.0 SR Berlinetta. It was no match for my mate's Sierra XR4i on the straights as you would expect but he could not stay with me on the twisties (perhaps road rally springs & dampers was cheating ?) Devon country roads LOL. The HSR was a different animal, with 180 bhp @ 7000 rpm on DCOE webers & electronic ignition I could see the fuel gauge dropping as the revs soared. Enormous fun but a big appetite for fuel & rear tyres.

And to think this was a normally aspirated 2.4 litre engine with twin Delorto Carburettors. The body kit was fantastic including the very smart radiator grille arrangement whereby the slotted grille would be replaced by a grille panel incorporating a spotlight pod for night rallies,looked quite cool too. This car was basically standard but for the overbore to 2400cc and a twincan Head from Swindon Racing and later from Irmscher.(Am I right,Opel aficionados?). Tony Fall(RIP) was very good for Opel and indeed put Opel on the rallying world map first with OPEL EUROHANDLER TEAM then with GM Eurosport.

Argee. A few weeks ago a '79 Ascona 400 replica, with a "little work" was sold over here for €15.000,=. Not even a 2.4 16v. But a 2.0 16v injection. An Opel Ascona or Manta 400 on licenceplates go over 75.000 euro's, I guess......

+Ramon Merino Villamil back in the 90's I build a manta with 400 fenders, 15'' renault clio wheel widened to 7.5'' in the front (205/55 ''15) and 9.5'' in the rear.(225/50 ''15) the front springs in the back, MB 300D springs front with bilstein shock absorbers. 4-2 in 1 manifold with 63 mm exhaust. 48 mm webers on a 2.0 16V. together with a 1:4.22 ratio slipdif rear axle and a 5 speed gearbox....... means lots of fun.

Ramon Merino Villamil was a beast, some nbrs; car weight 960 kg 200 hp 0-100 kp/h with in 6 sec 2nd gear 100 m/h with in 12 sec 3rd gear 7200 rpm in 5th gear rev lim was 226 km/h.

мощность Opel At that time all Opel CIH Six engines still had 2 valves per cylinder so no, it didn't derive from a 3.0 litre. As far as I remember the 24E unit which powered both the Ascona 400 and Manta 400 was developed in a sort of cooperation with Cosworth who helped developing the 16v head.

RickZanardi right the engine was build by cosworth. Now they build some kind of 6 to 4 cilinders transformation with a 16v head on it. If I am right C- kadett drivers like Koch and Wolves are using that kind of engines.
