I can remember having to replace both inner wings in a carlton and thinking obviously one that slipped through because the build quality was shocking, I can now see there was more than one 😂, nice job !!!!

Well dave, if it's any consolation you are making that manta look better than it was and with that it's as you say progress. Yes when you find damage be it rust, accident, or other on your projects it is disheartening. But as a view and subscriber I believe in you 😂 so thumbs up and you will get there in the end. Hi Terry, yes a stick welder is a big NO-NO. I,ve tried all the Lidl stores in my vicinity everything but 0.6dia you can get it online tho easy enough but postage is pricey. hope this helps.

Bought a tin of orange Bondaprimer from halfrauds, supposedly good stuff. Hard to get stuff that actually works these days as its all been messed with for various reasons.

I taught myself to weld gasless but would never go back to it now,, when I’m working outside I just block the wind as good as I can and turn the gas up,, I now use expired c02 fire extinguishers for the gas and seem to get decent results for a non professional,, also noticed a few BG items in your stock 🤣

Nice work Dave. I used to have a 2 door Ascona with the 400 bumper, boot lid and side skirts. Loved it and wish I could get another one.

Another hole down, I wonder how many more to go! Looking at all the comments on contamination etc. I think it was probably still corroded on the back side judging by how easily it holed. I am sure you intend to inject something into that void, so should last many years more.

Flux core would drive you to drink😂 I know how you feel regarding enthusiasm for tinkering when you are doing something and you find 3 more jobs needing doing. I've been doing my clutch since July and a combination of weather, breaking things and siezed fittings got me down. Last part arrived Friday from Spain via Lithuania for my cinquecento, some bits almost impossible to get and shipping costs as much as the bit you need. With brexit we don't buy from the UK which is a shame 🙄🇨🇮

Nice little tricky repair Dave.Regarding blowing holes with the fluxcore wire, I now use Parkside 0.6 flux core wire. Lower amps needed and welds very nice and vertually no splatter. Trouble is it,s only available online.

I've a Lidl flux core welder. Frustrating to get it working right. You seem quite handy with yours. Must look for the 0.6 wire if we have it here 🇮🇪😊

Hi Terry, my welder is a Clarke 9oEN dual purpose mig. The Parkside 0.6 flux core works a treat in it. Car bodywork no probs at all.

@johnwalters3782 thanks for the info. I've a rusty patch to cut out and weld up on my fiat. Didn't fancy the flux core and I know my stick welder would burn holes for sport 🙄 Will look out for the 0.6 wire 😊

Looked good in the end but a job that was far more difficult that it first appeared. Maybe the patch could have been a bit bigger to take away more of that pitting. Also I think there might have been a bit of lead contamination affecting your weld. Getting there though and all starting to come together

I see that someone has already commented about the possibility that the lead loading of the roof to pillar joint may have contaminated the metal in the area. The same thought had occurred to me, and the wind could have affected the welding, even using flux cored wire. Nevertheless, you made a sound repair in the end and a little filler is almost always needed.

To me it looks like it`s had a new roof-skin at some point. Drip-rail over the sidewindow looks uneven, same does the egde were the windshild rubber sits, and it`s not fully welded against the a-pillar. Roorf-skins are braized from factory.

There's a KZfaq video of a Manta being built in the Antwerp factory, they mig welded the roof pillars. Not the usual way, but that's how opel did it..

Was wondering if that roof joint had been leaded and you were dealing with contamination as you were welding? Good to see your video and overcoming the challenge of fluxcore on sheet metal and conquering it.

There is a company making these kits new, but not cheap, I had this one second hand and at a reasonable price.
