The Vauxhall Astra is no longer the dull, rep-friendly company car it once was. The current car is just as stylish as a Ford Focus and goes some way to challenge the VW Golf in terms of build quality and interior finish. There's a choice of three and five-door hatchbacks and a more practical estate, with a two-door Cascada convertible taking the place of the old Astra TwinTop. All models feel comfortable and secure on the road and if you plump for one of the eco-diesels, you'll manage impressive mpg, too. Used values are weak, but dealers tend to offer big discounts on both new and pre-owned cars, so try to avoid paying list price on all but the flagship VXR hot-hatchback versions. All-in, the Astra is a practical, durable and dependable, well-rounded family car.

Contradicting yourself a bit with the interior. In this video you say its cluttered with too many buttons but the GTC review you say the interior is stylish! They are both exact same interiors!!!

I genuinely feel vauxhall build quality is great. I've had 2 corsas (2001 and 2009) and my father has bad new astras like this one and they have all been a dream to maintain. More than a good enough reason to buy a vauxhall

I drove the 1.6 Elite of this Astra and was surprised how upmarket and refined it was. Very quiet, seats superb, nicely cocooned feel to the cab and seamless auto gearbox. I didn't even care about its only 115ps.

I just bought it used, granted I bought one really kept up well but I was surprised that it felt like a brand new car, not by tech but the feeling of solidness... wheel is a bit worn on my car though but that is the only part, all else feels solid, engine, gear box and stuff, after more than 220 000 km

They are offering almost 10% discount for this model in my country before the new model arrives next year. It is attractive car and large. I do like the facelift on the front and back but i am suprise they didn't redesign the cluttered center console by adding larger touch screen and reducing buttons in the progress. Strange not having power window in the back for mid and high range motel.

I have a 2011 VW Polo Match at the moment, 3 door. Am looking to upgrade for when I start a family in the next year or two, to a 5 door 2011 Astra like the one in this video. Am I making the right choice? Also, the one I want is Automatic and I have only ever driven Manual, is it an easy transition? Haha. Thanks!

not to mention the fact tht if you get this car, like I have, you will see that the centre consol i not as cluttered as it seems, and in fact goes to show that vauxhall think more about comfort, and full range of accessories. Vauxhall is right up there with bmw, audi's and that, the only difference is there cheaper, which is no problem, why spend loads of money on a car when you can get one just as reliable and if not more reliable, better quality, BETTER PERFORMANCE and cheaper all round. Vauxhall's never seem to get the credit they deserve :/

I 100% agree with you. If it was an extensive re-design like the mk6 Golf was to the mk5 Golf then there would be a lot to discuss and review. However, since it's just a cosmetic upgrade and the addition of one or two new features, was there any point? Does anyone need to be reminded of the good and bad points of the Astra. I'm still waiting for the new Leon to be reviewed as i wan't to know where that fits in into the class.

Had the diesel estate version sri. Punchy. Quite refined on the motorway, or at speed on nice roads, but horrible around town at low speeds on rough roads. Unrefined suspension couldn't deal with it - 18 inch wheels didn't help. Lifeless steering doesn't give confidence in the bends. Very reliable car though. Apart from wear and tear never let me down.

I really feel like they could easily sell this in the US as a Buick. It seems like it would be a good idea. It would give Buick a more youthful image. They might as well. Since they have pulled so many other models over, it's looks would fit right in. Plus this would be the only one I would actually be interested in buying. I doubt I would be alone in that either.

IMO best looking car of its class both outside and inside. I mean compare it for example to the VW's and Ford's box designs. Also I like that you can access most of the functions just by pressing one button instead of jumping in the menus and searching for the right functions although I understand that someone might find the number of buttons annoying. Seats (AGR) and driving position is also one of the best I have ever tried. AFL lights are also great. Motor isn't state of the art but it's really reliable if you look at the tests. The whole built quality is amazing (only car without any problems in 100 000 km test, "Best car ever tested in highly competitive compact class", auto motor und sport). Only cons I would give to this car is that the visibility is pretty poor because of the large side pillars in front. This makes it difficult to spot the pedestrian sometimes.

I'm looking at buying an Astra, my house mate just a focus too so good comparison. But his is a mk2 2005 which is my favorite and I'm not as keen on the same age astra, 2010 onwards they are so much nicer and better and still cheap, it switches round to as the focus 2010 onwards is horrid so it's like go for 2005 1.5k pound focus which in my experience with fords will drive nice but will have problems or go for an astra but have to spend around double but on a car that's 5 years new and looks it and I hear is reliable and is different to his and in my opinion better. Plus I've never had a vauxhall so it'd be nice to get something different.

Just watched Mat review of the R8 and noted he did not have anything at all to say about the buttons in that car The R8 has 27 buttons and 5 knobs v 4 knobs and 32 buttons on the Astra and I dont think an extra 5 buttons is all that much of a big deal Also the Astra buttons are broken down into climate control in the separate bottom section and radio cd functions in the midle.Al looks pretty logical to me and within easy reach of the driver unlike the R8 which had some down behind the gear stick

I have this car in white, 1.7 CDTI With leather seats, xenon and infinity sound :). The only thing I can relate to is the steering (It's undefined towards the center, can't explain it any better) also, the 1.7 CDTI has a short register og torque, I will fix it With a chip though. I don't regret the purchase at all. Would have to pay much more for a golf With the same Equipment + thats a Golf, the most regular car in the world.

If you compare this to the renault megan that I also drove it has the same fuel consumption as Astra. Talking about 1,6 16V and is 8 to 10,5 liters in town. The only good thing avout megane is that it has a 6 speed gearbox but it's a really anoying till you get to 3rd gear and you have to shift really fast. As for the golf ok I give you credit for consumption but the quality build of interior is not as good as Ford for the money. But even Ford has it

@lesrogers7310
@lesrogers7310 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. My wife has the 1.6 auto and I cannot recommend it! This variant does not come with a turbo as it's engine setup comes from the previous model when none came with one. The real killer though, is the new six-speed gearbox. The gearing is horrible and saps what little performance it used to have. It's especially bad when driven in 'manual-mode' or Tiptronic if you prefer that term.

Lol yeah, or simply use the car for a few days and learn them. My Dad's car has no screen other than your standard clock/CD track display and quite a few buttons, took no more than 1-2 trips to learn them properly. In fact my Mum's car has an old small screen used to navigate the radio stations, CD, settings etc and that took far longer to learn than the buttons. I can only imagine that these infotainment systems take even longer!

Matt If you are an honest man you would scan and publish your paycheck from Ford! You are doing everything to make Ford a big seller! I'm not a fan of Opel or Wauxhall, I like Ford cars actually; and also I own a Ford Focus but you are always keeping the bad points of the Ford cars obscured! For instance; * the C pillar is no different from Focus * some Focus still have no electric back windows but you never mention these (and lots of others) when reviewing a Ford!
