Open face motorcycle helmets are just a bad idea with no logical reason to use one beyond "I just want to" and that is fine, it is your face. But for new riders who just don't realise the risks, This video is for you.

Thanks for doing this. I am 65 years old and I have been riding all of my life with open face helmets. I did buy a full face helmet and a modular helmet but I went back to a open face. I watched your video because I bought a new bike and my helmet is overdue for replacement. I was considering an open face helmet. After all it is what I've always worn. Watching your video, I feel a bit silly. I've had a couple of serious accidents over the years and have walked away relatively unscathed. I realize that I've been very lucky and it is time to buck up and do the right thing.

if you can crash at 30mph on a bigger bike such as a 1000cc bike and get badly injured, the same goes for 50cc and 125cc bikes. I hate when people say that there don't need protection when riding a 50cc, its just a stupid decision.

How do you feel about flip up front helmets? I use a LS2 Valient which opens up and the chin guard goes all the way over to the back of your head, I find it great while stopped for a brew and a chat however once on the move I lock the chin guard down making it full face. Also this helmet...like many others are designed with wearing glasses in mind making it very easy and comfortable to wear them while riding. I can remember in the old days open Face helmets were only worn with goggles, I big leather chin strap and usually a thick scarf covering the jaw area. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the idea of a full face helmet came from!

Hi there. I was considering getting an open face helmet until I saw you video. I have a modular flip front helmet and a Yamaha dragstar. Now I have decided to stick with my full face helmet even though an open face or 3/4 helmet would look better for all of the reasons you have stated. I try to teach young and new drivers to be safe and to drive within their own limitations as I lost my youngest son in an RTC when he was just 18 years old. (5 years ago). I also see the results of RTC's too often as I am a firefighter. So I agree, any safety advice should be listened to and taken into consideration. Many thanks for your informative advice. R.N.

One question though, what about an open face helmet with one of those flip up visors that covers down to your chin, versus a conventional full or flip face helmet? I ask because I have some pretty serious sinus problems and my full face makes it difficult to reach my slime-dripping face. Will a clear visor covering my entire face offer a reasonable level of protection or is it really just there to protect against insects?

While I agree with wearing a full face helmet and always do, there are some subtle factors that the study may not have addressed. For example, if you ride without any or very little protective gear, it may mean you are a person who inherently takes more risks (i.e., riding well over the speed limit). Therefore incidences and consequences of having an accident are likely to occur with greater frequency and be more severe.

I have involved 2 serious crash 8 yrs apart and luckily with both on shoei full face helmet both took bad frontal damage which protected my face and I strongly recommended to my fellow riders to think about it, and about the sun glasses it happened way back then I was using ray ban on a highway usually riding fast at that moment I lift my visor up to get the air in guess what happens probably a pebble pick up from a car rear tyre flew and hit on my glasses with a sound of impact I closed my eyes the right side glass shatter into tiny pieces. Learn from real world experience. Never to bring up the visor while riding, unless stop for a red light at the traffic junction.

I wear glasses with a full-face helmet. It's a bit of a faff every time you put on or take off the helmet, but for the safety afforded, it's worth it. Of my two crashes, both instances I have avoided facially injure due to wearing a full-face helmet. One crash I flew forward and so is understandable that my chin guard hit the floor, but the second time I came off the side and I still got quite a crack to my chin area and the chin-guard protected me. There was even one instance where I fell off the bike whilst it was stationary and the chin guard stopped me getting hurt. I've ridden without a helmet on before and it feels amazingly freeing, but considering even the slightest and slowest accidents can have serious repercussions, I wear a full-face helmet.

Totally and utterly agree with the way you presented that my friend, it is an informed (hopefully) choice and if people choose to wear an open face then they must know the extra risks. I myself did so on my 50cc trial bike, and 90cc scooter, but when I moved up to 125's, I went full face and never looked back. Had a smash at 40mph and landed on my back, so can't say the helmet saved me, but I was told I faceplanted the road as I came down, so maybe it did! RSM8, keep the advice coming, youngsters need to know the risks so they can make their choices!

Well said, totally agree. I really like the custom bike look, but there are plenty of retro-style but still full-face helmets available, which I'll be getting when I have a bike of that nature. Also you forgot to mention that plenty of modern full-faces have slots and spaces for glasses, thus removing that argument entirely.

Nicely put together argument and vid mate! :-) I have a Davida open face lid, I have pretty much retired it now but that is mainly due to me motovlogging rather than not liking it. 100% agree on the risks, and the right to choose our own stupid actions. The main thing I loved about my Davida was how quiet it is, I have never owned a quieter crash helmet and I have had many top tier full face crash helmets in my 27yrs on bikes. I'll probs not wear it on a bike again due to the risks if I was in an accident, but if I did a car trackday and open face lids were allowed I would use it as it is very comfy, and in a car when pushing it can all get quite hot and stuffy in a full face lid.

Good video. You are clearly passionate about a public safety issue and are trying to educate people. Having said that, if we are being honest, you have chosen a personal (i.e. arbitrary) point on the risk:benefit spectrum and have decided that people one step over are irrational and stupid. Let me be clear that I share a similar point on the spectrum as you do (I ride a motorcycle and go ATGATT with quality equipment). However, there are many people who would think you (and I) are just as stupid for even riding motorcycles at all. From where they sit (in a modern car with crumple zones, seat belt, crash avoidance systems, air bags) it would seem inane to argue on the finer points of which helmet we choose to wear while piloting our two-wheeled death machines. Regardless, keep up the good work.

Completely agree, in fact I don't ever ride any more with my visor up ever since a golf ball sized rock bounced off the road and hit the side of my visor smashing the clip at the side, I was very lucky. With an open faced helmet it would of smashed strait into my eye socket. Always go full face. Not to mention most full face helmet inserts have a slight gap at the sides specifically designed for glasses wearers.

What about the argument that dual sport helmets like the Icon Variant being are dangerous as the extended chin guard can cause your head and neck to snap back further if you land on your chin then a normal style helmet would? I use to wear a flip up helmet, but I stopped because I felt it just was not safe enough on my big bike. (I had this helmet before I passed my full licence). I was involved in a serious quad bike accident when I was a teen (my friend was on the back). My friend was wearing a flip up helmet and I was wearing a full face. I was fine, he broke a lot of front teeth, and messed up his chin and jaw. Same goes with correct gear, I had full protection, he had minimal, he has massive cuts and brusies on his stomach and hands, I was fine again. Also having the wind in your face at 40MPH + is not fun. It is hard to breathe, you cant see because of the cold tears. And you get bugs in your eyes! This video makes very good points, and is so true.

Dont agree with everything you say but you definitely raised some good points, good video, good message! I wear a full face because although it may not be pretty, I do quite like having a face. Rarely use my visor because I prefer it up, feels less like your heads in a fisbowl. I do keep the visor on however because on the off chance I am going >30/35 (commuter) I do pop it down because getting hit in the glasses by shit is scary AF right close to your eye. The glasses and full face is dumb argument not to wear one, my CBT instructor mentioned some guys get straight armed glasses with their helmets but I've never really had a problem with my normal frames

I now wear a Shoei Hornet X2 having come from wearing an open face helmet. I've an Adventure style bike and like the advantage of having a helmet with a long peak/visor combination. Oh and I don't ever ride on motorways. THE only negative part of wearing a full face helmet is the reduced ability to hear stuff at junctions with stop lines etc. So you need to take extra care when pulling out of a junction and that's no bad thing!

Freedom of choice, too much nanny state health and safety but if you wanna ride with an open face it's your choice just know the risks, but he'll if we wanted to be completely safe we wouldn't ride bikes and all drive 4x4 but that'd be boring. When I first started riding i was apprehensive of wearing a full face helmet because I felt claustrophobic but I got over that and also I ride full face with glasses and have no problems at all but the allure of the old face pic still falls occasionally but as you said spicy too many done and it enough pros.

Well done! And we can crank it up a notch further by saying "Just take the car. And don't forget to put your seat belt on." That's what my aunt Karen used to say to me. I had been told many times that when I hop on a motorbike, one foot is already in the grave. The very first time I heard that was in 1965 after my friend and I slid on gravel taking a corner. We weren't wearing any protective gear, not even a helmet. Came home with rash on arms and legs. But the lure of two-wheeled thrill was too hard to resist that I carried on regardless of consequences. Just mitigate the risks.

There's a guy like that near me. No exhaust, no gear or helmet until recently where he's started wearing a cheap Motocross style helmet. Rides like a twat and ruins the local park by doing donuts all over the grass.

It is weird how you mention about 'hipsters' lol it was only at the weekend my mum asked me why didn't I have a vintage (open face) style helmet to match with riding my scooter. My instant response was I didn't want to smash my jaw if I was to have an accident. BUT I do use a modular/flip-up helmet Nitro F341-VN (but this is purely down to being a spectacle wearer and more comfortable) but I never have the chin guard up when doing 20mph+ . Also my response was in partial to your previous video

Hi spicy110 I fully agree with you and when you talked about broken jaw for anyone reading this I currently have a broken jaw and have just had surgery I currently have screws in my mouth helping keep it shut and trust me it isn't nice at all this isn't due to a bike accident but people pls just wear a helmet with a chin guard 👍🏻

I had a serious accident yesterday and my face is totally fucked up, got more than 10 stitches in my neck, all because of an "open helmet". PLEASE, don't wear them. Please wear a closed helmet. I was wearing it just for style purposes, but never again.

Very well put there spicy. I agree it is our choice but we should all make an informed choice. I for one would never wear an open Face helmet because like you I know the consequences of such a decision and quite frankly I like my face the way it is. Good video mate.

I wear my custom 500 almost exclusively on green lanes.... I am in total agreement on the new rider front: custom 500 was my first helmet, I got it before my bike. The very first thing I bought after getting my bike was a full face....confidence on the road as a new rider was almost 2x as strong once wearing the full face... the reduced weight is the main reason I still use it for green lanes. If I could afford a full face & lightweight mx helmet the open face would be relegated to posing on the driveway in a heart beat.

I would wear a full face but I can't find one that fits at a price I can afford. I need a 3 or 4 xl size. Additionally I am very claustrophobic and if there isn't enough room I end up with a panic attack. I therefore wear my 3/4 helmet all the time. I would love to wear a full face or modular but so far I haven't been able. I did have one accident and it was in my 3/4. The back of my head struck the ground and the 3/4 helmet did a great job. I also always wear at least safety glasses even with a visor down.

I could not possibly agree more with you on this one. The amount of times I had big bugs and little rocks hit my visor and chin-guard on my daily commute on the Autobahn is proof enough for me. In the end you can chip off parts of your teeth with a spoon while eating cereal in a rush. I do not want to know what a little rock does at as little as 130 kph. ...Now that I think about it it's kind of odd... in every third video of mine I can hear something hitting the helmet that I do not want to hit my face haha.

They are a better than a open face still not as good as a full face. Main thing you still don't have with them is structural rigidity in the helmet.

I love the classic bike riders who must use a pudding basin halmet cos it goes with the bike. Over forty year's of riding I have had started with a jet type open face but when full face came out bought a Bell Star, a friend lost his teeth when he was hit in the face by a side stand that fell of a bike in front, both he and the stand were doing over 85 at the time.
