i have better luck out of gravity feed, that drip into a planter tray, or bird baths, The deeper it is the more they push one another down and drown. So any thing shadow works better i use the 2 inch setting foam for a landing pad and they suck it up threw the pad > How it works wet it! Then ring it out! Then place on the tray to soak up the nectar> Bees lands on it, and keeps them from drowning

crazy how the pile on top of one another pushing each other down > SO REMEMBER SHADOW FEEDING like bird baths, i use 2 gal pickle jar, with a foam ring around the jar lip, that fits the planter tray with a small stick under the lip of the jar to make it gravity feeds. Turn it upside down when its full and ready, Then set it on top of a block or bucket that upside down for a stand ITS the best > >> I did have trouble with the bird baths at 1st. They wanted to land in it> but over time they learn to use the outer side to land and stand on drink from the outer sides as the water or nectar goes down. WIDER SPACES KEEP THEM FROM PILING UP! CHEERS BRO

This will probably work fine. The best way that I have seen using buckets, is the method that David uses at BarnyardBees. Thanks for the video and keep em coming, enjoyed it. Phillip Hall

I have tried that and it is difficult to transport them for me with the holes in the sides of the buckets but I will agree his method works well. The reason I like to trash feed like this is because I can close up the buckets and the open them and set them out without spilling the food.

Bruce you may want to try a tote feeder with latch top. Little Bits Honey bees has a good video on construction and use.

I'm having to open feed because of a really bad drought. But I am having some worries about it. I notice how it becomes like an animal and alive with tons of bees. But I can't not open feed because of the drought. So when I fill a bucket with sugar water they will finish it off before the end of the day. This is the part I'm wondering about. Will the bees start fighting if you let the bucket stay empty in the late afternoon until morning? Or how do you manage this part? I'm hoping to not use more than 1 bag of sugar in a day...but the drought is pretty severe. I'd like to sort of let the feeder be one 5 gallon bucket and then let it run out in the afternoon in my yard. Is there any problem with having it empty from then on? And maybe you could suggest how to sort ease into shutting it off or weaning the bees from feed with a smoother transitition? I'm thinking I can just replace the bucket of sugar syrup with water to sort of shock them into not going after the nearest hive. But I haven't tested this. But it seems like if suddenly their sugar syrup runs out the swarm of feeders would go straight to the next hive. But if its replaced by water or even a lower sugar in the water content maybe that can help them slow down? Curious what you think.

@brucesbees 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions! I usually just put the sugar water out and when it’s done don’t worry about it much. If worried about robbing you might want to make sure the feeder is quite a ways away from your hives. Lowering the sugar content in the water will not necessarily wean them. It may actually stimulate the queen to lay more though. How are your hives looking on inspections. Do they have honey stores?

@Bruce. Thanks 4 Ur reply. U r right to ask about resources. They r good now. But others in my area really barren; bad drought. 3 weeks ago I saw they were low & started feeding. but i'd been kind of ...well U know when you see tons of them on the feeder, & it got me worried about how to control it. My resources only OK because of feeding. But a few weeks ago wasn't so good & was scary. I'd heard ppl shouldn't open feed but the drought is killer & without it won't be ready for winter & the northern growing seasons being so short is kind of added pressure too. Really appreciate your videos & efforts. Looking forward to your next video.

2:1 and mix with boiling water, it will invert some of it.. 2:1 also is half the work for the bees, twice as hard to become honey bound, and they draw twice or triple the comb... I feed 2:1 year round for this reason

How did it look the next day? Would bungee cords help hold the lids down?
@brucesbees

Didn’t have a chance to check but hopefully everything is ok. I’m sure it is. I work and live a ways from there and don’t get home until a little late in the evening. Usually don’t do a lot after work.

brucesbees: Understood. I am fortunate to only have 9 hives for now plus they are close by. Finishing my 2nd year. Hoping year 3 can be where I start raising a few queens. I am feeding mine like crazy as well. Hammering the SHB so they are ok for now. Boxes are full but am seeing reductions in colonies given the recent 95+ degree weather in Atl.

Yeah it’s been hot here in the southeast for sure. Good luck! BTW bungee cords would probably work well. Didn’t think of that. Thanks for checking in.

brucesbees: pretty hot for sure. Raccoons are a big problem. Trap some & turn them loose down by the chattahoochie. They will tump the buckets over which is never a pretty site. Pleased w/my 2nd year but understand there is still much to learn.

I have never done this, but the beekeepers in MN strongly discourage open feeding, as it sets off robber frenzies and attacks from nearby colonies. Any experience with this?
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 5 жыл бұрын
Not too much. Has worked well for me in the past. Not a bad idea to set the feed a ways from the hives to help prevent robbing.
