Modular gauss gun with optical trigger.
The design can be downloaded from Thingiverse (www.thingiverse.com/thing:23539). A description of the design and test process can be found on my blog (www.timeexpander.com/wordpress) (Norwegian only - sorry :))

What an incredible feat of electrical engineering! I like the modularity and neatness!

Supertiny projectiles and huge energy (assuming, becuase youve used huge SCRs) wont work well. Try at least 4mm. The idea and design is great.

I used LTR3208E phototransistors as sensors and TSAL7200 as IR emitters (mostly because I had a lot of them lying around from previous projects). The type of emitter and sensor is not critical. You could just as easily use parts salvaged from the opto triggers used in pinball machines.

I doubt it :) The distance from the optotrigger to the coil is the same for all modules. At increasing velocity, timing and pulse duration becomes a concern. You can risk that the projectile is sucked back if the speed of the projectile exceeds the time it takes to trigger the pulse.

Hmmm. Good guess. Maybe sensors can be replaced with a computer signal that is fine tuned based on math calculations on the supposed speed and acceleration. Of course during fine tuning I wouldn't hand feed the projectile. :D

Question. With enough modules stacked in a row, could you put a nail to orbit?

Probably but it would take thousands of them.
