Open Water Swimming with Dr Heather Massey (Documentary) | NI Science Festival
Faced with closed swimming pools and looking for something new to do, many people have been dipping their toes in the sea in greater and greater numbers, and approving of what open water swimming has to offer.
During lockdown the rates of cold water swimming have rocketed, but is it as good for us as we think?
In this film we hear from Dr Heather Massey, a swimmer and a researcher at the Extreme Environments Laboratory at the University of Portsmouth about what happens to our bodies when we swim in cold water. She has 15 years of experience in research in Extreme Environments, with a special interest in the physiological effects of cold water immersion, sea survival and cold water swimming.
We also talk to a variety of local swimmers, dippers, and coaches from Strangford Lough, Helens Bay, South Down and Islandmagee.
RNLI SAFETY ADVICE
Choose a familiar location and never swim alone
- Take a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch
- Take plenty of warm clothes for before and after your dip, along with a hot drink to help you warm up again
- Wearing a wetsuit will help increase your buoyancy and reduce the chances of suffering cold water shock
- Be seen - wear a brightly coloured swim cap and consider using a tow float
- If you get into trouble remember 'Float to Live', by leaning back in the water, extending your arms and legs

Wow great video !!! I just discovered cold open water swimming at age 56 . I'm soooo thankful for this explanation of what's going on!! My first time was this summer. Wading in to the ocean, I wasn't expecting the water to be THAT cold! I almost had to get out but I wanted to swim so bad i ignored the temp, composed myself and got all the way in. After swimming about a half mile, I noticed that I wasn't feeling cold, and i began feeling HIGH like, really REALLY high. Even though it was a clean, spiritual feeling, I was scared that if it continued I wouldn't make it back, so I came in. The next day I went again, thinking the high may have been a fluke, but it happened again and every time since; I LOVE it. I'm sooo grateful for your video to help people understand what's going on and how to stay safe!!! Grateful for this. There's so much good info here it merits watching several times!

People have been doing this for so many years, swearing they gain benefits. We do cryosaunas for injuries, footballers immerse their bodies in ice baths... How come there's so little literature on these benefits? Great video- thank you!!!

Helpful suggestions and makes me feel more prepared for an open water swim I will be doing about a week from now. While the water where I’m headed will be cold to me, it won’t be as cold as what these swimmers enjoy! Thank you.

I a doctor myself, in Spain. I have been on antidepressants for 4 months as a result of the pandemia-vaccination crisis. Not an off-sick day throughout these years, I just kept my upper lip stiff and carried on with the pressure. I am now off those drugs, but my mood was not quite back to my usual self. I have taken up running and cold showers, and I feel much better. I sleep quality is improved. I am eager for the winter to set in in Spain and take short immersions in a lake near my home. I have taken October sea baths but the Cantabric water is still over 15 degrees celsius. I am not interested in long swims, just in staying in nature and share that experience with my husband.

I have been swiming many many years in cold water (14 - 16 C). The main thing for this practicing is get used to cold. It takes at least 3 days gradualy increasing time of stay in the beging of swing season after ice on the lakes melts. First time it is enough to stay in cold water for 1 minute. The next time after several hours cold shock will be lesser and you can stay for 4 minutes and try swim. The main thing keeping track how your head is reacting to cold. Is it acking? You have to avoid it by increasing time in cold water gradually. I am always listening my body responces and not making anything which makes me feel bad. Thats why better cold water swiming is autumn (not spring). It much more easy extend summer swiming into next season. Enjoy swiming!

The woman who described shaking and becoming dissociated was possibly experiencing an attempt by her body to move through a block of tonic immobility. The psychologist Peter Levine has written at length about this.

I consider myself an open water swimmer and I would never go in Puget Sound (10 C) without a wetsuit. I know a lot of people that do, and they swear by it. No gracias para mi. I think a distinction can be made between open water swimming and cold water swimming.

Contemplating this however as a diabetic on insulin aged 60 my feet often feel like blocks of ice anyway. Might purchase a 5mm steamer wetsuit to start (with gloves and boots)... Oh and why are they towing an inflated UXB around, surely if you got into difficulty you would be lifeless 6-9 underwater ...!
