In this video I show you safe and easy ways to open a window that has been painted shut.
A few years ago, I started to reach out to neighbors to help with various issues related to historic homes in Vallejo California.
As I took notes and spoke with local experts, I began to think about how I could best share what I was learning.
The result has become VallejoHistoricHomes.com.
VallejoHistoricHomes.com is a video blog series that's meant to encourage local preservation and increase our enjoyment of living in Vallejo, California.
It's been a tremendous labor of love and I'm excited to share it with you.

Thank you sir for your videos. We bought a 1955 house and has 20 beautiful wood windows painted shut. Today we were there and, with your tips, I opened 4 of them. I have 16 more to go but sure I am happy with the results. Thank you!

Thank you for this video! I live in a 1947 house. Only the 3rd owner. I wanted to get a window open to get a breeze thru. It took me 3 hours. But I got it open!

We just bought a 1987 Victorian home that is a complete restoration job. Almost every single window is painted shut. One window even has a gap that is completely open! I am looking forward to watching more of your videos to help us get this home back to how she was! Thank You!

Hi Kiki kiki I think they get painted shut by accident and just not reopened. But with wooden windows it is so easy to open most of them back up. Thanks for caring for your old house!

Hello all2ambitious williams. No this will not work. The top window is not accessible in the same way. However you can take your windows apart to get the top window moving. I have videos that show how to do that as well.

I’m moving into my first home it needs a little work the windows are painted shut I’ll be trying your trick. How do you make screens for older windows?

You can make the screens in the normal way but if you have a double hung window you will want to make them cover the entire size of the window not just the bottom half.

I don’t know what kind of paint you’re dealing with but, if I can get the putty knife I need the window in the cell, it’s not really painted shut. At least not with 5 layers of exterior paint like my windows.

I recently bought a 100 year old home and am bound and determined to restore the windows that have not only been painted shut but the sashes (and pulley hardware) have been painted too. Is there any hope of stripping this paint and saving the original windows?

Hello Alanna. You will have a lot easer time than you think. What city is your home in by the way? I have videos here about taking the windows apart and rebuilding. Changing the ropes is easer than it seems. There are many ways to get paint off old brass hardware. Try soaking the hardware in lacquer thinner for a few days and gentle brush it will a small brass wire brush (brass only).

Have you ever tried this when you can only access one side of the windows? I've broken the seal on one side, and I can move them up and down a bit, but the other side is painted (and not accessible due to storm windows that are rusted in on the other side.

Hello Vanessa. I think you will be OK. Windows are pretty tough. I would try to gently wiggle the window up. If you really cant get back to break the seal on the paint and wiggling doesnt do it then I would try to get a small flat prybar directly under the Style (the vertical wood member) and see if you can lift it. As long as you are directly under the style there is a very good chance you will not break the glass. Please let me know how it goes!

I live in Vallejo and want to restore my wood windows-any sources for someone who does this? I only have 5 left but want to keep them. Sadly 5 were replaced with aluminum windows that are now going south.

We just bought a 150 year old Italianate and we want to paint our wooden windows from the inside....how can we do this without painting them shut?

Sorry for the delay in response. The best way to paint windows is to take them apart from the inside, paint them do the weatherization and put them back. I have other videos on how to do this and I teach this in an in person class once a year or so.

What if the window is on the second floor and it’s the part of the window where you unlock it that won’t open (yes it’s unlocked)

Hello Reanna. If this is a double hung wooden window you can use the same techniques from this video from the inside only or use a ladder and do it from the outside. If this answer doesnt fit the question you are asking please aks it in a differant ways and I try to give a better answer.

How about a crank-open window ?

That is usually a crank problem... maybe even rust. You might use WD40 and move it back and forth. if it is only paint then the above listed video will still work.
