I am a computational engineer and have a little background in CFD. I am also working in the automotive industry as a cfd engineer but not as a developer but rather as a user of StarCCM+. How long would it take me to get to the following levels in openfoam? 1. Conduct incompressible simple simulations. 2. Get into some specific modules like multiphase flow. 3. Integrate new modules like data based turbulence wall modeling (This will also require c++ knowledge). Thank you for the answers!

Good question! I’ll forward it to Tobi and he can answer it if he wants :)

This is a question which is hard to answer. It always depends on your knowledge in different fields and mainly on the resources one can take such as screencasts, tutorials, papers, and maybe direct contact to other FOAM users. 1. incompressible flows (with your background) in a few days - e.g., my screencast would support you. However, I just mean setting up simulations and run it without too much fundamentals regarding the used solver and keywords one can use 2. switching to other solvers is not that large investigation, however, different solvers different physics, different behaviors, different knowledge is required - cannot give you an estimation of that. Personally, I started using multiphase solvers (VOF) after a few weeks (but without knowing whats going on there) 3. New wall functions - probably not too difficult as one can just copy-paste an existing wall function and modify it. Complete new models will require much more knowledge. Knowing doxygen will support you and of course knowing c++

I've got a question for Tobias. I am currently studying aerospace engineering in Ingolstadt and almost finished with my bachelor's. What would I study for my master's if I wanted to work with CFD and delve deeper in my studies?

Online software documentations are a great place to start. OpenFOAM has great tutorials and documentation. Apart from that, I will run an engineering cohort which will be 6 weeks long with one week only on CFD and hands-on tutorials: academy.jousefmurad.com/ - make sure to stay tuned on more information coming soon.
