I remember back in elementary school, we had a school play of the Wizard of Oz and I played the Wizard himself. It was a cardboard cutout of the Wizard's head and I was behind the cutout head doing the Wizard's voice.

I would love to see all of Buddy Ebson’s Oz footage. I’ve heard so many times that if he had not gotten sick from the makeup, he would have been pure magic on the screen.
@MayorMcCheeseStalker
@MayorMcCheeseStalker 2 жыл бұрын
You've really heard that "so many times"? 'Cause as a 50-year fan of this film, I've NEVER heard how great Ebsen would have been in this role. I've always enjoyed Ebsen's pre-"Oz" performances ("The Broadway Melody of 1936," "Captain January," "Born to Dance," "Broadway Melody of 1938"), but after hearing his horrible rendition of "If I Only Had a Heart," into which he put so little effort, I'm glad he didn't complete the film --- although I AM sorry about the circumstances surrounding his departure. Ebsen was a better dancer than Haley, or at least a more eccentric one, but vocally, Haley soars above Ebsen.
@ChuckD79
@ChuckD79 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, none of Ebsen's footage survived...also, the only scenes he ever got to film were those in the Witch's castle, since that and Dorothy's first meeting with the Scarecrow were the only ones shot by original director Richard Thorpe before he was fired.
@MayorMcCheeseStalker
@MayorMcCheeseStalker 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChuckD79 His voice is still in the film --- on the last 2 reprises of "We're Off to See the Wizard." It's not really noticable when the Cowardly Lion joins them and they sing it as a quartet in the Haunted Forest, but earlier, when it's sung as a trio by the Tin Man's cottage, you can definitely tell that it's not Haley's voice.
@ChuckD79
@ChuckD79 2 жыл бұрын
@@MayorMcCheeseStalker You are correct...though Haley re-recorded If I Only Had a Heart and the Tin Man's solo lines in The Jitterbug and If I Only Had the Nerve, they decided it was unnecessary to do so for group vocals, so Ebsen's voice was kept for We're Off to See the Wizard.

I used to love watching all of these extras after the movie on VHS. As a child, this was my gateway into understanding how movies are really made. It was so interesting to see all of the alternate footage and deleted scenes that weren't in the movie, learning the different names and appearances of the actors who played the characters, and it started my deep interest in finding out what went on behind the scenes of my other favorite movies. The Wizard of Oz truly has one of the most complex and fascinating histories behind the making of any film.

1:43 In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, MGM/UA Home Video proudly presents a special collector's supplement to the classic motion picture. This unique compilation includes rare footage specially presented for your enjoyment. Here is the original Wizard of Oz Coming Attractions trailer produced by MGM for its 1955 theatrical reissue. 4:39 At the prestigious 1939 Oscar Ceremonies, Mickey Rooney presented Judy Garland with a very special Academy Award for her role as Dorothy. 5:41 Texas contest winners were greeted on the MGM Lot by Bert Lahr, Ray Bolger, and the original Tin Man: Buddy Ebsen in this promotional trailer produced prior to the film's release. 6:56 Buddy Ebsen was originally cast to play the Tin Man, but unfortunately became ill from the silver makeup he wore. His recording of If I Only Had a Heart still remains and is presented here with rare photos in the Tin Man costume. 8:28 The Jitterbug was an elaborate dance sequence deleted from the final cut of The Wizard of Oz. The actual motion picture footage no longer exists, but thanks to these photographs and home movies, MGM/UA reconstructs this musical number with its original soundtrack. 12:03 A longer version of the Scarecrow's song If I Only Had a Brain was discovered in the MGM Vaults in 1973. This footage features a unique Ray Bolger dance number choreographed by Busby Berkeley.

Even though Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs first released on VHS in 1994, I believe if it was part of the Classics collection in 1987 in honor of the 50th Anniversary, I'd do a similar supplement like this after the ending title card with RKO Radio Pictures, but with still images and texts like the laserdisc of the Work in Progress cut of Beauty and the Beast with the voice of Mark Elliott narrating the intros. Here's how they'd go in this order (you will note that some of the wording, I got from this closing but with different sayings to differ from this video where they actually came from)... [Special Collector's Supplement/1967 Promotional Trailer (background: Dwarfs on tree trunk during Heigh-Ho)] In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney Home Video proudly presents a special collector's supplement to the classic motion picture. This unique collection includes rare footage specially displayed for your viewing pleasure. Here is the original Snow White coming attractions trailer, produced by Disney for its 1967 re-release. [Academy Awards Excerpt: Shirley Temple and Walt Disney (background: Snow White saying goodbye to Grumpy before leaving with the prince)] At the glamorous 1938 Oscar ceremony, Shirley Temple presented Walt Disney with a very special Academy Award for creating the very first animated movie. [Tricks of Our Trade: Billy House Dancing Footage (background: Snow White's dance in The Silly Song)] Billy House served as live-action reference for realistic dancing for Happy in The Silly Song. This scene from Tricks of Our Trade shows how the animators studied his motions before they drew it on paper. [Bonus Song: Music in Your Soup (background: Snow White testing the soup from the cauldron)] Music in Your Soup was intended to follow The Washing Song as a way to show how the Dwarfs got the soap out of Dopey, but unfortunately, was cut because of storytelling reasons. The complete voices, music, and sound effects still remain, and are presented here with cleaned-up pencil animation by Ward Kimball. [Pencil Reconstruction: Bedroom Fight (background: Dwarfs' noses poking over the bed frame)] Originally, Grumpy still wanted Snow White gone from the cottage, which led to a big fight in this longer sequence deleted from the final cut of Snow White. The actual color footage and soundtrack no longer exist, but thanks to these pencil drawings and newly-recorded voices, Disney reconstructs this argument with the original musical underscore. [Additional Sequence: Evil Queen at the Cauldron (background: Evil Queen holding the goblet as the thunderbolt mixes the potion)] An additional moment of the Evil Queen preparing the Poisoned Apple was carefully preserved in the Disney Vaults in a fully-completed form. This footage showcases a brief verse by Lucille LaVerne that plays while the Queen mixes the cauldron before she dips the apple into the brew. [Copyright Screen] (C) 1987 The Walt Disney Company All Rights Reserved Well? Do these sound like good intros for those Snow White bonuses?

@@MayorMcCheeseStalker LOL A friend of mine played Dorothy in a non-MGM children's play of _Wizard,_ and the Tin Woodman was supposed to do a rap, but the guy playing him couldn't rap. So he tried to find a tune that fit the words, and it turned out to fit "The Ballad of Jed Clampett!" The sad part is, I don't think he knew about Ebsen having been cast in the role, since for whatever weird reason he had in his bean, he played the character in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice...
