This opening commentary by Whoopi Goldberg is taken from the start of every disc in the Looney Tunes: Golden Collection Volume 3 DVD collection. All collections of classic cartoons that were distributed by Warner Brothers had a warning that some of the cartoons reflected the racial attitudes of their time. She points out that these cartoons should be taken for their entertainment value and none of them reflected the attitudes the producers and animators had at the time. This is exactly how we should view classic cartoons today. Strictly entertainment, nothing more!

I have always said that censoring racism from history actually hurts racial equality. It makes it seem as though there was nothing that had to be overcome at all. Also, not keeping a record of the problem can lead to it happening again.

Hello, I'm Whoopi Goldberg and welcome to the Looney Tunes Golden Collection. Like many of you, I love cartoons, and I've been a fan of the Looney Tunes since I was a kid. You know the best thing about Looney Tunes is that they represent us, every one of us. They're part of Americana, mainstream culture, they become members of our families. I mean you don't have to go far to find out how close to us they really are. Think about "What's up Doc?" or "You're despicable" or "That's all folks!" These are phrases we all know, spoken by characters we recognize and understand, probably because most of the time they are more human then we give them credit for. And I think that's why they're true American treasures. However, the Looney Tunes and their irreverent brand are products of their time, unfortunately at that time racial and ethnic were caricatured in ways that may have embarrassed or even hurt people of color, women, and ethnic groups. Now nobody intended it, but that's what happened. Now some of the cartoons here reflect some of the prejudices that were commonplace in American society, especially when it came to the treatment of racial and ethnic minorities. Now these jokes were wrong then and they are wrong today. But removing these inexcusable jokes from this collection, would be the same to say they never existed. So they are presented here to accurately reflect a part of our history that cannot and should not be ignored. But I also want to point out that the Looney Tunes were made by the studio that supported hiring the first black animator, Frank Braxton, and that encouraged women voice artists like June Foray to become as recognizable as their on-screen characters. All that said, there is only one original, and we are so proud to present Looney Tunes here for their enduring entertainment value, uncut and restored just as they originally appeared. So sit back and enjoy the following collection of shorts, and I must tell you personally I think Porky never looked so good.

It says there that none of Disney’s employees, including the animator Art Babbit, who hated Disney intensely, ever accused him of racism or bigotry or anti-Semitism. Disney also donated to Jewish charities, was named “1955 Man of the year” by the B’nai B’rith chapter in Beverly Hills and employed a number of Jews, some of whom were in influential positions. So it’s clearly obvious that Walt Disney was not a racist! And don’t you dare say that Wikipedia is full of shit because “aNyOnE cAn ChAnGe WhAtEvEr ThEy WaNt On ThErE”, because the EXACT same thing can be said about IMDB, but you probably think IMDB is somehow “truthful”.

I think because in looney tunes the joke is on the minorities, while in family guy the joke is on the people who believe in the stereotypes. Personally, I don't see a big deal in it. I am sure there are a good amount of minorities, if not most, who weren't affected at all by looney tunes, and that Disney has whoopi Goldberg doing this because of public image. On the opposite side, perhaps any/ all negative depictions of race needs to be addressed. On the opposite *opposite* side, a lot of classic literature shows negative depictions about race. I.e, The merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, and to push against those depictions would be to push against most classical literature.

Because they do reflect commonalities in what ever they are stereo typing, and it is a shame they don't allow that now. I think as a society we have become overly sensitive, at the expense of just enjoying classic entertainment. I just hate that Disney and WB continually shove the PC agenda down our faces in their modern remakes.

It’s not the companies’ own faults, their just doing their jobs to make money, after all it’s just business. I blame too much social media for starting the whole cancel culture thing and the USA government for the 2 party political system that drives a wedge between the left wing liberal Democrat/social justice warriors pushing the whole diversity, racial insensitivity a little too far (not that I blame them but while their heart is in the right place, I feel like they’re getting carried away and they’re not different from the right) and the right wing conservative republican/anti SJW/ satanic panic Illuminati/new world order/end times bible prophecy/flat earth/Q-anon fear mongering conspiracy theories who are being big jerks with all that irrational negativity about Jewish people taking over America and our business and the entertainment industry with the whole Rockefeller/Jesuit/freemasonry bullshit, bitching and complaining about diversity ruining the Hollywood entertainment industry (which is definitely NOT because I can think of million real reasons that could ruin Hollywood but I don’t think I should make a long comment or we’ll be here for a thousand years), hating on gay and lesbian people just because it’s against the Bible and it results in pedophilia (that’s like saying that eating meat and fish caused the coronavirus, according to the vegans), thinking that the virus is fake and global warming is a hoax and saying cartoons are satanic, the go woke go broke crap, thinking Trump is a best president ever (that’s a lie because Trump sucks and we can’t forget about the incident on January 6th), thinking that future presidents is the Antichrist and they are not it, believing the government made the frogs gay which is not true because it’s science and a whole lot of other bullshit that I could go on and on and on. This whole 21st century millennium curse caused by the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks are also possible in how much our society, politics and entertainment have gone downhill in some places throughout the y2k period. But for Disney, their CEO, Bob Iger is a Democrat supporter and he goes out of his way to ruin a company for all the wrong reasons and it’s crazy & I’m getting tired of the same old constant blame and bashing on the left wing for all the problems in America, the entertainment industry and the world because being a Democrat supporter is neither a excuse nor a reason to run a entertainment company down to a ground by making cruddy, crappy, shitty, terrible, horrible, really bad garbage movies and I like to see some right wing people do the same thing as the left do. If the industry want more diversity in movies and cartoons, that’s fine. If the industry wants to fix a problem with the lack of minorities in film and in the Oscar nominees to put a end to the whole Oscar so white nonsense, so be it. And if they can’t stand Trump, I don’t blame them. However if they are going to do the diversity thing, they need to do it right. They should not make money off of it or pretend to care and pander to the crowd or follow some bullshit social media trend and vise versa. They want diversity? They should really mean it. They need to really care. They need to be in our shoes and walk a mile in them and have empathy for every human being of every color, race, gender, disability, etc. Being a leftist should not be a reason to run a good company like Disney and it doesn’t matter which side of the political spectrum you are whether Democrat or republican, left or right, liberal or conservative, politics should not ever get in the way of quality entertainment and this is what the United States government’s 2 party political system is trying to make us do and people should not spend too much time on social media with the dumb trends, and other stuff. I don’t know about Warner bros but they did milk Scooby Doo and force Cartoon Network to air teen titans go so I could care less except for the tiny toons reboot that’s coming out as well as jellystone.

Publishers & Copyright holders of books by Agatha Christie, Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming and others could simply add a disclaimer at the front of relevant books much like the one Whoopie Goldberg delivers here, and publish those books as they were left by the authors at the time of the authors' deaths (I realize some authors choose to revise already-published works, and that is their prerogative). Instead, we are living through a time (2023 as of this moment) when the books are secretly edited and sold with no disclaimers regarding those edits, resulting in an Orwellian whitewashing of literature. Luckily for books, they eventually pass into the public domain and can be freely and easily accessed in their original forms for readers who are interested in how the authors saw the world they lived in. Unfortunately for motion pictures, if the sensitivity team comes for a film, the only unaltered copies available may be poor quality digitized prints...the future is much more uncertain for media like film that must be preserved and carefully restored in some cases using multiple sources of film, audio tape, etc. Hopefully films will be preserved as they were originally distributed for future generations to understand what society was like in 1930 or 1950, etc. I fear that things like Fred Astaire movies with blackface scenes will get censored, and viewers will not really have an easy way to access that material and learn about the good, the bad, and the ugly of 20th century U.S. pop culture. This is not to argue that uncensored versions should be the only versions available, particularly if a work is aimed at children. Show kids stuff that is appropriate for their age level, and let adults make their own choices.

This (unfortunately still necessary) introductory message, is worth a thousand times more than any school syllabus of any shitty school/college that aproves burning a book. Just like recently happened with those 5,000 children’s books and comics of Asterix or Tintin burned in Canada for "offending indigenous people". Instead of burning a book, teach our young people to identify the historical context of each work, teach them to have their own criteria and to be able to understand and remember why the world must change and what is the correct way to do it. Erase the past means condemn huanity to repeat the same mistakes again and again.

hsew there's a major difference between this and confederate symbols. I don't think that learning about the civil war and what the confederate flag means should be erased from our history books, because education on those topics is very important. The problem is the people who wave confederate flags with pride, because they are standing for racial inequality/racism. The reason these things exist for cartoons is because it doesn't reflect the views of the creators anymore. But the confederate flags still waving show that people still support racism, and are still very offensive. So this warning would mean nothing.

@@ShockMe1994 Confederate flag was the flag the south wanted to keep when it tried to separate itself from the United States. It symbolizes division and separation during a dark time in America. Waving it around is pretty unAmerican because those people aren't pledging to the Constitutional flag we have now as if their still pushing for separation of America. It's different from waving around a Mexican or Chinese, etc. Flag because those people are valuing their heritage and culture, the Confederate flag only holds a small piece of history with no real value to it other than division. And no offense but people should find it humiliating they're honoring a flag named after the weakest form of government America has had known as, The Articles of Confederatation.

It took myself and many others over a decade in a world wide campaign to convince Warner Brothers to release the original Looney Tunes uncut and uncensored as they were going to do what Disney did... which was incinerate any of their original works that could be found offensive. Considering your idiotic and hateful rant against this actor simply doing her job you might want to give a second thought about whether you have in fact moved beyond racism... I for one have to wonder if you would be this stupid if the actor were white.

ivanmarsh 1> She can simply refuse to do the intro, plain and simple. PLUS given her track record of "pulliing the race card," it's more something I'd not want on the volume. 2> Kudos for you and many others. I'm glad some things are saved. I just think this comentary put before the menu system (instead of maybe, y'know, EXTRAS) is stupid. As far as the "color" of the idiot providing the commentary, I don't care. It could be two irish lasses with sexy voices wearing nothing but cut-off shirts and daisy dukes holding beer, and I STILL wouldn't want to listen (and btw, I am irish). I didn't start spewing anything on her race or culture... I just think it stupid that people get offended still from a Looney Toons short, and they have to have some stupid actor that talks for 2-3 minutes to tell you "Ooooo some of the stuff is racist..." A green-screen and the text of what Whoopi said for 10 seconds would have been plenty sufficient, or even a sticker on the DVD cover. If you think that is racist, you're the moron.
