Thank you so much! I'm very new to Go but I've been practicing martial arts for a number of years and the "short and long" explanation just clicked for me! I feel like I get the into the same headspace playing chess or go as I do in a sword fight and being able to translate that to a board is amazing! It's like a cut or a thrust, a jab or a cross. It's making me appreciate how beautiful this game is!

Go is an incredible game especially for honers 😁 Its a gane with simple rules but insanely deep for those who choose to dive. Just like chess, if you are best you win every time, so to have actual competition you would have to find an opponent equal to your skill which isnt always easy. Again perfect for the honers that would want gratification from their hours of practice and studying but for the working man with less time? Simpler games or more randomness would probably make a better game so the less practiced player still have a chance at winning. 😊 By the way if you like abstract strategy like Go i recommend Shobu 😊 Such a beautiful game 😅

A book that really helped me understand the opening when I was around 15-10k was "In the Beginning" from the Elementary Go Series. I highly recommend it.

I'm ~150 games in and so far i've felt lost in the opening. I didn't know why I was playing this stone or this stone, it was all too vague. Now with the priority list it makes perfect sense, your explanations are clear and easy to understand. Bravo, and thank you. I'm excited to play another game, and another after that...

Thank you for these videos (and I watch and do the lessons on the website as well). I've just got into Go - going in a week from knowing nothing to playing (and even winning!) a few games on a 9x9 against others. This video has been particularly useful for understanding what my opponents are doing at the beginning and why they suddenly "invade" my territory (the more aggressive style).

@@GoMagic Of course, but you need a foothold to get started. I would play games, place my stone in the corner (san san) and wonder why my opponent was putting theirs next to mine, or near one of the star points, etc. Just getting an idea of what and why they may do this has been a big help.

Excellent video! I've learned important opening pointers from it. A minor correction: _fuseki_ (布石) refers to the whole-board patterns in the opening phase of the game, just like _joseki_ (定石) refers to standard local development patterns that occur typically in the corner areas during the opening phase of the game. The phase of the opening is known in Japanese as _joban_ (序盤).

Thanks for the great explanation! One question regarding the Tier 5 example: wouldn't it be much more important for white to play somewhereon the left side (on rank 3 or 4) between its already established corners? Securing its area here seems to me of much more importance than the small extensions?

None of those moves would be a mistake, it's possible. But don't think that a move at the bottom is a small extension=) It's an extension that prevents the opponent's development AND prepares an invasion at the bottom next. Whereas a move on the left is just territory defense.

If you listen closely, the corner enclosures will whisper it =) The wider side is considered to be its "face"

@GoMagic -- it's still not clear to me why the small knight's corner enclosure shape suggests a direction of play. Specifically, why is it preferable to extend from the 3-4 point rather than the 5-3 point? At 2:20 you mention it looks like a flat tire, but the other direction also looks like a flat tire after the first move. They look nearly symmetric to me, so what am I missing?

The small knight's corner enclosure does suggest a direction of play due to the efficiency and potential follow-up moves. Imagine a line drawn between two corner stones. It's a tiny wall that you can and should use. Extending from it has more potential to build a moyo.

I don't get the difference between the move in 2:19 and the one in 2:16. They look symmetrical to me... What am i missing?

You probably mean 2:19 and 2:26? That's because of the stones in the corner. In the second case they radiate influence toward the stone. As a result, you get better shape and can more easily build a framework.

@@GoMagic Yes! That's what i meant, I mistyped. I think I see it now. It's not really symmetric, as there are two lines between the stones in the second case and you can see it as a proyection in that direction. Thank you! The concept of shape it's still a little misleading to me.

Is there any GO Api that I can use for private use? I just want to develop a tiny web application where I can play with my colleagues as a team building idea since we’re doing virtual meetings and some websites are blocked.

We don't have any Api but OGS (online Go server) is open source so it has it.

At 10.46, when I try and play like this, I just dont know what to do after, where to play….to me it seems like there is nothing left to do, every thing is decided, hence why I like playing middle first then sides, as there is a lot of fighting that takes place. I know, I said it before, i dont understand go..

A text start early because the strategies are really simple. People don't want to learn how to play complex. Go. just attack simply and get points. That's all that matters. It's not very elegant. I don't think it's fruitful either.

2:20 - lol, didn't you exagerrate here? Those combinations of stones are almost completly symetrical. They would have been completly symmetrical if the second stone had been one line to the right, or the first stone one line lower.

Yes, they look similar, almost symmetrical, but there is still a difference that matters.
