Thank you for watching Day 2 of our trip to Erbil, Iraq! It was an amazing and eventful trip filled with the most beautiful sights to see in Iraq. In this video we witnessed the historical event of Assyrians, and the Assyrian Church of the East (ACOE), reestablishing its Patriarchal headquarters in the homeland! History: Assyrians are the indigenous people of modern day countries of Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria; as Assyria once existed amongst these borders. Going to Iraq, the homeland of our ancestors, is a big deal, especially for those of us in the diaspora, as we are able to see where our lineage comes from.

This is so interesting! I thought the Assyrians were an ancient people from the Old Testament who no longer existed. (Sorry, but I went to Calif. public schools, lol.) But I do believe that Assyrians should have their own country or region where they can live together in their own culture, rather than being dispersed throughout the world.

I’m glad this video found you then! We Assyrians have our own culture, language, and traditions. There’s estimated to be about 3-5million of us, majority in the US in cities such as Chicago, LA, Modesto, Phoenix, Detroit.

Nearly six million Assyrian Christians dot the world. Mesopotamia is the homeland of the Assyrians. The famous royal cities of the Assyrians, Ashur, Nimrud (Kalhu), Arbela, Dur-Sharrukin and Nineveh were built in it. The Assyrians ruled for approximately 1,300 years - from about 2000 B.C. to 612/10 BC - in northern Mesopotamia an ancient landscape between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. A clear reference to the existence of the Assyrians, on the other hand, can already be found in the Old Testament (1st Book of Moses 2:14). There it says: * “… the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates..."
