One of the most crazy executions in English history saw the King Charles I on the 30th January 1649 be taken to the executioner’s scaffold which had been created on Whitehall. He was the man who had plunged his country into the deadliest civil war ever fought on English soil, and he had been condemned by Parliament and figures such as Oliver Cromwell. But the King was met by an anonymous executioner and an axeman who in one swing of the axe took the King’s head from his shoulders. However as the King’s remains were gathered up there was a question as to what to do with the body of Charles I, as Parliament were worried that it would become a royalist relic and be venerated by those who wanted to oppose the new political structure in England. But Charles I was buried in secret alongside one of the most controversial and notorious Kings of England, Henry VIII but 200 years after his execution his coffin was broken into.

my ancestor, 8x great uncle Col Daniel Axtell was commander of the guard and worked alongside Cromwell. Axtel walked the King across the scaffold to his death. He (Axtell) would be beheaded himself after the dead King's son (Charles II) returned from exile. The new king refused to pardon Axtell and after a trial he would end up at Tyburn 11 years after King Charles I was killed

Charles II was more despicable than his dad - there's no doubt about that. Tell me - what did any of the Stuart males bring to the British Crown to enhance it? I'll tell you - NOTHING. The only Stuarts that were any good are the 2 Stuart women, Mary & Anne who disowned their Stuart ancestors & ruled with grace & dignity.

I just purchased an antique satirical print by Cruikshank which satirised the discovery of the coffins of Henry VIII and Charles I who of course was in the same vault.

Was Charles I the "brutal" king who "led his nation into the convulsion of the Civil War?" Were those words not as aptly directed to his enemies, who murdered him and subjected England to the dour and ultimately insufferable rule of his successor, Cromwell - whose own head was soon separated from his body and mounted on a pike for all to see?

@@mariescarth1756 “Absolute” monarchy is a misnomer. There is no such thing. By the way, how’s that parliamentary system working out for you?

Read that the general sent Scottish highlanders taken prisoner of war over to the colonies and to the islands as indentured servants, which is why many Scottish families were established here. My Morrison family who left the Morristown area of New Jersey in the 1700s for Virginia are thought to be part of that POW group. Some unexpected positive consequeces occurred due to what Cromwell intended for punishment. Have several other Scottish families whom I've not had time to research. My Gordon line wound up in North Carolina.

@@sharon8110 Did the same to many Irish families too.. indentured servitude is just another name for slavery really.. Some got lucky, many thousands more didn't sadly..
