Trials in life can be so daunting. In 1995 I survived a car accident where I had to learn to walk again. I spent five months in a wheelchair and lost all muscle memory in my legs and feet. The physical therapy was painful and intense. Journaling actually helped my mental health. When I look back now and read those entries it makes me so appreciative that I captured those moments and insights of such a challenging chapter of my life. It meant a lot for me to hear about your challenging chapter. Thank you Miranda.

Thank you for this honest, confessional blog, I'm really glad that you trust all of us in this online community you built around you to discuss these goals with. And I'm particularly glad that you are starting this year fit and healthy, and finding country life inspirational for your professional goals. It's never easy moving away from a place where you lived many years, but it is extra hard doing so in the middle of a pandemic! I've also decided to take control these past six months; I had let myself go and neglected making time for myself since I had my children. Since the first lockdown I took up yoga again, this time at home using Yoga with Adriene's videos and doing so with my partner. And we have not looked back! There are mornings when it's too cold or we are too tired, but it is always worth it. We feel stronger and fitter than we have in ages, but more importantly we feel we have time to breathe and forget everything else. Please continue with your vlogs, you're way better than you think you are! Sending love x

I have chronic big-toe joint pain...like you, I can't remember the exact occurrence, but it has progressed to the point where I have simply been in tears many days. I have never been one to love exercise, truthfully. However, I walked as a teen and into my twenties, averaging with my mom (walking partner...always making any event SO much nicer ;) 6-9 miles a day. Now (I am 36), I can barely make one mile without deep and resonating regret. Chiropractors and doctors were unable to assist me much, and I spend a bit each month, ever-hopeful and trying to find ways to relieve pain more naturally. In ways, as debilitated as I feel, the journey has forced me to look into varying options, to care for myself, and to consider things I honestly never would have considered before the injury. It has been a long health journey for certain, and God has allowed me to really realize how health is a holistic, not merely a specified, condition. The "trial and error" brought me similarly to activities like Pilates and swimming; it also has taught me increased patience---both for others and with myself. Thank you for blessing us with such rawness in your struggles. I feel as though I made a new friend---albeit, long-distance. "Hugs" and continued wisdom in your health journey

Enjoyed very much. I spent many of hours years ago feeding birds. I had thistle seed feeders for the finches and suet cakes for the woodpeckers and titmice and chickadees. And a large feeder for all the rest of them. The squirrel drove me mad because they could lift the lid of the feeder and climb inside. 😂. I eventually got a feeder with a lock and cut down the branch that they'd launch themselves from. Other wild life would come up to feed like raccoons and opossums. Deer even. My desk faced the big windows towards the woods next to our house. Once I saw a bit of red in the bramble behind the feeder, so I reached for my binoculars and found a red fox was sitting there watching me watching him. I hope you do get some binoculars. It's so much fun. Good memories. Thank you Miranda,. I love your vlogs. ❤️

Wonderful video Miranda. Thank you for sharing your story online; it's a brave thing to do. It's great to hear that you are starting to feel more like yourself again. You mentioned ideas for video chats and I have two that I am interested in hearing about. The first is fashion- you have such beautiful clothing. I would love to hear about you fashion choices and get an insight into how you style your wardrobe. The second is about writing- you mentioned your journalling progress in this video but I would also love to hear about your freelance work, your relationship with creative writing, any plans to write a novel, things like that.❤️❤️

I can see why your birds love your puddings, they looked delicious 😍. I suspect your birdie visitors are gonna multiply pretty darn quickly, you’re definitely going to need some binoculars 😁 I did so enjoy your video on books set in Scotland and it was interesting watching you putting your display together, you have a very creative eye. I love seeing what people wear, you’ve worn so many lovely dresses, I think I may have mentioned on Instagram (I’m Piggy.browne on Instagram) that I thought fashion would be an interesting thing to look at. For example, does our sense of style and how we dress influence what we read, or does what we read, influence how we dress? Modern, or back catalogue, vintage dress or trousers...... Sorry to hear you’ve had a difficult few years, a painful injury can be a real set back both physically and emotionally, when your confidence has been knocked it can be really tricky trying to get back to normal. Be kind to yourself, my mantra has always been ‘one foot in front of the other’ time and patience are our most under rated assets. I’ve taken to meeting a friend once a week for a good long walk, I’ve been telling her about your tea reads and she looks forward every week to hearing about what you and your mum have baked. We both miss seeing our mums, so you and yours have become our Tuesday morning mum and daughter fix 🥰

I can certainly relate to your health injury and how it affected you. Years ago I found out I am a type 2 Diabetic, something I was definitely not expecting, but found out through a regular blood test for my annual exam. I immediately went into low carb eating, hopped on that treadmill and was able to keep my numbers in normal ranges without medication for 7 years now. But 3 years ago I stubbed my little toe against a book and broke it. That set off a Morton's Neuroma, and in favouring my right foot, I sprained my left coming down the stairs, 10 months later. My podiatrist refused to send me to PT so I found another one and was in PT for a full year, relearning how to walk. I still have the neuroma, that is for life. I still have some problems with my ankle. I am just getting back on the treadmill, but I am always nervous to go down stairs now and so afraid of reinjuring myself. So basically I went from a very fit, slim person who could walk, sprint and run, to one who feels pain as soon as I stand up. It is a long and hard journey, but I am doing it and still holding on to normal numbers without meds!

I can so relate to the exercise issue as I suffer from chronic disc degenerative disease in my spine and fibromyalgia and I dance ballet and for several years I had quit due to the extreme pain, but I've restarted the barre portion of the class and I can't get do adagio or centre work and that's OK, but the majority of the barre work I can do and it does help! Best of luck to you! :)

Thanks so much for sharing your goals, Miranda! Your videos are an inspiration for me to hit my own goal this year, of reading fifty books. Reading is something I always enjoyed as a child, but have done less as an adult with other parts of life “getting in the way.” With the pandemic and discovering your videos in the past year, that’s changed and I’ve rediscovered reading as a passion. 📚✨

Hi Miranda. I can relate to your issues with exercise. I am an off again / on again runner. Unfortunately, I've had some nasty falls. One time I must have stepped on an acorn or round pod. I was running one second and flat on the ground the next, having hit my teeth on the pavement. My glasses needed fixing, I was scraped all over, and it took awhile to heal. But it could have been worse. As a consequence, if there's any chance that the ground is slippery or if there are too many acorns, I don't run. I have instead developed a two-mile-a-day walking habit, walking inside the house if it's not nice outside. Anyway, you're an inspiration, and I just wanted to say, "I can relate."

I appreciate your honesty Miranda. I had a similar experience and yoga is what I feel has saved me over the past few years. I'm glad you're having a positive experience with exercising this month, and I hope it continues for you.

Miranda thank you for your inspiring words about exercising. I have fibromyalgia and am in constant pain 24/7 for the last 15 years. I have slowly got worse but I did stay at my ideal weight and fairly healthy by walking. However with the lockdowns my health and well being has diminished a lot. After your vlog I looked on line for some easy fibromyalgia exercises that I can do from my bed. I also broke my arm in December (the humerus near the shoulder) and that made me even more trapped inside pain and movement limitation. It turns out I have osteoporosis which I think last year’s inactivity brought about. I need to start physio for my arm and shoulder. So I will try for February to do the physio, the gentle stretches and to do some walking twice a week starting at just 5 minutes Thank you. You reminded me that I need to chip away at this a little at a time and not be defeated by how bad things are right now. ❤️

So inspiring and thought-provoking! I’m so glad you have left your injury behind you finally, it is so hard to keep positive when in pain and anxious. I found it interesting you said you can be more of a “glass half empty” person as your posts and videos always seem imbued with positivity and finding the joys in everything, big and small. It sounds like you are off to a great start achieving your goals! I loved your thoughts on journaling, that’s something I never seem to stick to, but like the idea of the five minute journal and think I’d be more likely to keep that up. I loved watching the birds enjoying your bird puddings and I will definitely be making some myself! I love your vlogs and think you are great at them already!

Hi Miranda! Thank you for your vlog today. I have returned to reading with a vengeance thanks to you and thanks to a knee injury a few months ago. I can completely identify with the fear of experiencing the pain again. I was running stadium stairs two years ago and now I am only too happy to hobble to the mailbox. I am getting better, but not as quickly as I’d like. Your work makes me feel less alone in this pandemic and with this injury. It has been so isolating. I am encouraged to see that there are people who love the things I love- the written word, snow falling in the winter garden, hopping birds, and a gentle moment with a cup of steaming tea. Thank you for sharing so much beauty with us. 💕

Hi Miranda what an inspirational video thank you, last year in the very first week of the year I was out with my husband walking the dogs and as we walked out of our village there was a pothole in the pavement which I didn’t see and I put my foot out the edge of it and ended up with a torn muscle in my knee. I was in a lot of pain for 3 months and as we have two large dogs that need exercising and can’t be walked by one person on there own this became somewhat of a problem this plus my age which I am a few years older than your mum so healing takes a lot longer. Twelve months on a good knee brace and several courses of pain relief my knee is a lot better but like you I am very nervous of injuring it again which as we love walking with and without our dogs and as we live in the country it’s something I’ve done all my life and with the situation at the moment walking and fresh air is so good for mental health, so I really understand how you have felt. also it has always helped with keeping my weight balanced against my passion for cake and biscuits so I am hoping this year I can continue to be positive keep going with my walking and really enjoy it without feeling anxious every time I go out for a walk. Stay positive and stay safe Janet xxx

I had something just like what you went through. Coming out the far side was a process both difficult and challenging. I am also grateful for your advice on journaling. What a beautiful fold out card🎄! I must have seen this out of order, as I’ve seen the Scottish books already. Which I loved. I love seeing your bedroom with the beautiful yellow vintage flowered wallpaper! And the vintage pretty bed. So charming. I love seeing thr house and town. We actually made a trip to Yorkshire to the dales to follow the route of James Herriot back in 1993. We loved it. We went to the Wheatshief where a James spent his honeymoon, and the Wensleydale Heifer for tea and to see the Buttertubs. It was wonderful. Now loved the bird puddings. It would be rather difficult to find coconut shells and the lard these days. Here in Ohio in the US we often make bird food by smearing peanut butter on large pinecones and then roll in seeds. Then hang in the trees. I just received Nature Poems for every Night of the Year, and am enjoying it. The Day book is on the way. You inspired me to read more poetry.

I'm so sorry to hear of your shoulder injury. Last year I started with a frozen shoulder in February and it was excruciating. I couldn't sleep for months and it really took a toll on me mentally and emotionally. Thankfully, frozen shoulder does work itself out, so I'm much better, but I haven't been able to motivate myself to get back to the exercise as I had done before and the rest of my body is suffering for it. You have motivated me to stop putting things off and just get to it! It's funny you mention the morning pages because, for me, that was my first step toward healing. Around November, once my shoulder was well and I was sleeping better, I began getting up earlier and writing my morning pages again. I feel so much more energized and 'put back together." Thank you for your transparency because it was just what I needed to hear today. ❤️

Such a lovely video,Miranda, thank you for sharing - honestly seeing you so vulnerable moved me quite a lot. I have never been extremely fit in my life but always enjoyed various sports, from basketball and swimming to rollerblading and cycling - I was then diagnosed eith hypothyroidism at the start of my twenties and just really went to s place of commiseration because of my weight gain and complete lack of motivation due to being constantly tired. The past year has brought me the time to try again to enjoy exercise, especially yoga, and hopefully like you this will be the start to a new way of life, similar to what I was able to do before. Again, thank you. And seeing all the beautiful little things you fill your days and life with brings me joy

You have so much courage, Miranda, both in sharing your struggles and for persevering with exercise when it's been such a hard journey these last several years. Thank you for sharing with us. I have a goal to stretch more this year. I've started stretching during a daily work meeting I have (since I'm remote, no one can tell!). I have always been embarrassed at how inflexible I am (especially in gym class at school), but I've begun to realize that the goal is to be the most flexible I can be (not anyone else). I'm so glad the birds liked the pudding! What a joy to be in the country and to see the birds feasting right outside your window.

Thank you for opening up to us about a subject that makes you feel uncomfortable. In doing so, you invite us to share our own vulnerabilities without judgement and build a community of trust. I see you in a more sympathetic light and appreciate you more. I also want to re-establish a routine of exercise. Prior to the pandemic, I had started a routine of exercise by going to the gym. I had worked on developing the habit 4 months prior to the pandemic. I had to stop going once the fear of spread had become evident. I felt depressed because I felt like I was finally beginning to take control of my health and suddenly it had come to a halt. I really enjoyed the motivation I had found in the instructors, in the group of people I was working with, all with the common goal to be fit, have energy and strength. I miss it. I am hopeful that I’ll be able to resume this healthy habit once things get back to normal. I am trying to drink more water and to develop the habit of going on walks around my neighborhood at least 4 times a week. It’s encouraging to hear someone like you share the same goal of developing an exercise routine and also addressing mental health. I like the gratitude journal idea. I think it will help improve my outlook in my life and make me feel better. I’d like to know more about your style choices (fashion-wise) and personal improvement talks too. You are very down-to-earth and simple, but there is also an elegance and refinement in you that I admire.

I just found your channel, Miranda, and have been going back to check out older ones. I really enjoy your whole aesthetic. So calming, charming and pleasant. I had some major remodeling on the kitchen area in our home and I had a small deck added to our eating area which used to be a sunroom. I put up a bird feeder and a suet feeder and have been enjoying watching the birds feed. I also have lots of squirrels stop by. Right now I have several purple finches and a couple of golden finches. So much fun. I have set some loose goals-learn how to be a better knitter; be more consistent with my morning pages; add some artwork to my journal; get back into my Yoga practice; be able to swim a mile. I had a hip replacement several years ago and something went wrong and I had to have a second surgery. I was left with a limp and, like you, it worries me that I might do more harm to the muscle in that leg. Swimming helps, but I do like a Yoga. Tracy Anderson sounds intriguing. I may check her out. Thank you for such lovely podcasts and vlogs.

This was such an inspiring and encouraging vlog Miranda. It’s not easy to talk about physical and mental health, but I think it always helps others not to feel alone when they hear stories like yours. I can’t begin to imagine how painful your shoulder must have been for all these years and i do understand how you could have come to build up a protective instinct against further injury, which resulted in your very understandable fear of exercise. I am so glad you feel you are ready to exercise safely again and that this is helping your sense of self and wellbeing. My goals for this year are to walk 5-6 days per week to improve my fitness, and to eat mindfully and healthily; not to be on ‘a diet’ but to develop life long healthy eating habits. Like you I like to record my small achievements and i write in my diary the days i have walked, and how far! I have never journaled very successfully, perhaps i would have more success with morning pages, I must investigate. X

I always come away from your vlogs feeling better but this one helped me tremendously, I’m anxious a lot..so much so that in 2017 I started collecting and assembling jigsaw puzzles as a way to focus and not worry about dying and not being able to raise my own daughter because I lost my mother when I was 10 years old and the thought of my daughter growing up without me started to consume me...puzzling helped me a lot but I never thought about journaling which sounds wonderful (I’m going to try that for a week) excuse me for rambling but just hearing you talk about your goals especially your physical goals of getting back to exercising Is so honest, beautiful, and relatable..You’re just Beautiful inside and out 🥰🥰🥰 ...Thank you 💕

Miranda I must try that bird feeder shell project😁. I’ve been drawn back into crafting esp crafts that center around nature🌻🌻. I’ve been making lemon and herb stove top potpourri so calm and lift my mood🍋 I can relate on being timid to restart an exercise routine because I stopped working out due to struggles with asthma- it’s been out of control the last few years😕 and I couldn’t do much health wise. Fortunately, I’ve been seeing a functional medicine doctor and I’ve seen improvements in breathing I haven’t had in years🙏🏽🙌🏽. However, I have been rather timid to exercise...I have to reestablish a trust with my body and it can be difficult... But I’m looking forward to moving forward at my own pace back into fitness and whole body care - particularly with all the comfort snacking I’ve been indulging in!!😄👍🏽 I’d love for you to keep us updated with your workout progress, it looks like we’re on a similar journey. I know you’ll get back to that confident place you wish to be. I’m rooting for you! 😊

Thank you for your kind words Deb! I'm sorry you've been struggling with asthma and exercise yourself. I'm rooting for you this year too, and your plan to move forward at your own pace and regaining confidence is definitely where I'm at as well. I'll definitely keep sharing about my own journey back into a proper exercise regime. Take care! xxx

I've been subscribed to your channel for a while for the books and beautiful scenery in your vlogs...but had to comment for the first time because I also do Tracy Anderson streaming! I had a health issue around 3 years ago after years of running and doing other types of exercise. For about 1 1/2 years I was unable to do anything and fell into a depression--but I read a ton more books, which help! ;) Then I came across TA's streaming. Signed up for the 2-week trial and was hooked. I sympathize with feeling disconnected physically and am SO happy you are moving your body like you want to again!

Thank you for sharing something so personal. I've slowly started integrating morning writing and movement back into my life, too. I am coveting your Slightly Foxed notebook and thinking I need to upgrade. I had to stop all exercise for quite a bit when I embarked on recovery from an eating disorder that had been hounding me from my late teens and throughout most of my adult life. I have been fully recovered for a number of years and now am able to enjoy a healthy relationship with movement. It is so much more pleasurable when the intention comes from a place of care, as much to lift the spirit as the heart rate, rather than from a place of punishment. I'm glad your confidence has renewed alongside your healing. I hurt my upper back / neck about two years ago and was devastated at how long it took to heal, so I can empathize with your distress of coping with chronic pain. Like many, as I see from the comments, I have been practicing yoga more diligently. I'm not very good at it! But I do enjoy it, in part to keep my back and neck limber and strong, but also to combat everything else that stiffens after hours in a chair staring at a screen. May I say how relieved I am that your themed bookcase display involves the addition of books up front and not a complete change out of ALL the books. THAT would be an "exercise" in patience! xx

I have a frozen shoulder and can't raise my left arm overhead. I'd really like to swim and ride a bike, but the rode to recovery is very slow. I'm still in physical therapy twice a week and have exercises. It's frustrating to not be able to do normal things. I need to focus more on what I can do. It's been quite painful but I had a cortisone shot recently and that helped.

Good luck with all your goals, for this year, Miranda! I'm so sorry you had to endure such a painful injury and have had to live for so long with the physical, mental and emotional impact. It's very difficult to be motivated, sociable and positive when you feel you've lost an essential part of yourself. Well done for coping so well and finding ways to regain your pleasure in exercising. You've created such an original and enjoyable space through your youtube channel, your blog and Instagram. I know how delighted I was to discover someone who has similar tastes to me but has also expanded my interests, too, and introduced me to new things! Thank you and sending you all best wishes ❤️

Really interesting video and thank you for being so open about your injury. Pleased to hear you are beginning to feel stronger and able to exercise again. Exercise plays such a big part in not just our physical health but our mental health too. A few years ago I did Yoga classes with a brilliant teacher but unfortunately she moved and I never found a class I enjoyed as much. I’m hoping this year to find a class again as I’ve really noticed a difference in my flexibility and strength. I did start doing Yoga with Adrienne on YT but seemed to lose motivation . I must try again - you have inspired me! I love your style, both personal and in your home, so for future videos would like to hear about your favourite clothing brands, beauty products and home decor.

Hi Miranda, what a wonderful vlog and so many recognisable things within it for me. I love Emma's book and have made lots of things from it. I took a silver clay jewellery making class at her home a couple of years ago and she was so lovely and I adore the necklace I made with her. I really do understand your struggle as I have been through something similar myself. I was a life-long horse rider then one day, going against my better judgement, had a terrible fall and wasn't able to walk properly for three months during which time I also developed a life threatening illness and that led me to Julia Cameron's The Artist Way and the morning writing which was cathartic for me. I no longer wanted to subject a horse to the whims of human pleasure and gave up riding and took up running which I love. I watched your video late last night and, do you know, after weeks of being demotivated and not running, I got up this morning and ran two miles round the garden (not bad for a little old lady) - how wonderful to have been inspired by you - again!! Thanks Miranda, all best wishes, Teresa ❤️🥰🏃‍♀️❤️ ps. apologies for long comment.

Oh Miranda what a beautiful vlog you have made! Thank you for sharing something so private with us and I would like to congratulate you for your courage to start exercising again. About 20 years ago I broke my both elbows as I was going downstairs in a friends' house. I had to wear a cast for 1 month and after that 2 months of physiotherapy. It took me a lot of time to try exercise again because I was afraid of breaking my arms again. I am so glad that you made it and I am sure you are going to achieve all your goals this year!

Thank you for such an honest vlog; it’s lovely to have such positive goals for the year ahead. I am hoping to shrink my TBR pile this year, but I say that every year. I keep telling myself that I need to get back into yoga and I think the move to working from home and how that certainly seems to be limiting how much I move on a daily basis has encouraged me to take this goal a bit more seriously. I used to regularly attend a class but I stopped when I was pregnant as I found even child pose had a bizarre effect on my nose and have dipped in and out of practice but now my son is eighteen months old so I feel I’m ready to properly get back into it.

This was an excellent video. I learned so many things that I want to work on for myself. I suffer from depression and anxiety and find it hard to do things for myself, because I have difficulty with self-worth. I also have an autoimmune disease that makes every day a pain fest and a struggle. Some days I can’t even get up. I’ve been feeling so not myself lately, and this video was encouraging. I’m trying to focus on getting myself healthier as well, and you’re amazing for sharing this.

Loved your vlog, Miranda! The birds really seemed to love your puddings :D I've used 'The 5 Minute Journal' for years until I found 'The 6 Minute Diary'. It's almost exactly the same, but there's a little more room for nighttime and I love it even more. Just in case you wanted to check it out. I'm excited to see more of your vlogs this year and your beautiful photography. Something I've been also adding is pulling an affirmation card every morning and adding fun and sparkly stickers to my journal. Which fountain pen do you like? I love my Lamy pen and also my silver Pilot fountain pens. I hope that you'll be able to enjoy your new exercise routine and you'll be able to feel good without pain. Thank you much for sharing this part of your life and your goals for 2021! (Btw, your dressing gown is lovely!!) xoxoxo P.S. For video ideas, I'd love to see a "what's in my purse" video, which I know is silly, but I do find it fascinating! Also, if you wanted to share your stationary and pen supplies or sharing your greeting card collection, that would be amazing.

Love the vlog. Those birds were so happy! When I was about 14 I woke up feeling like I had a metal rod in the side of my neck and my head tilted to the side about 45 degrees. I couldn’t lift my head straight because of the “rod”. Went to the dr and they didn’t know why but said it would eventually relax. It took 4-5 days 👀 but it never happened again. Sometimes random things just happen. I’ve had 2 week long bouts of vertigo that come on so fast. The second time about 11 years ago I dropped my daughter off at preschool, came home, sat down and then it felt like a sudden tornado in my head. I had to lie down and stay that way for a week. It was truly awful and I was so scared that it would happen while I was driving. What if it had happened 30 minutes earlier when I took my daughter to school? Ugh. It made me scared of it for a long time and I don’t even like mentioning or hearing about vertigo like I’ll be jinxed. My dad has had a couple bad episodes of it too and I think we share the same inner ear condition. So now I feel like I’m living the rest of my life as a ticking time bomb for vertigo. But we can’t let it hold us back I suppose. 🤍

Sending lots of encouragement to you on your workout journey. A few years ago my husband and I decided that we were going to go on a fitness journey together. We were exercises 5 to 6 days a week with most of those days including jogging for cardio. I started to have knee pain but continued to push through it. On some days it was so intense after jogging that my leg would seize on me. I finally took a break from jogging to see if the pain would ease. It slowly started to feel better. This spring I slowly started to jog again. One morning I attempted to jog and it felt like my knee was going to pop out of place. I finally went to the doctor and ended up needing surgery which I had this fall. I have been a bit frightened to start jogging again but decided with the new year I needed to face those fears so I have slowly started jogging again.

Please know if you feed the birds this year please continue to do so as birds remember year after year where there was food and in some cases will return to a place and wait and wait there until they basically starve. It’s not so bad in the UK but here in North America migrating birds do this a lot. Basically birds are not just for Christmas they are for life 😊 Miranda I love your blogs and you are a beautiful woman and inside and out. I will come back and view your vlog in my quiet time.

❤️❤️❤️ I think lockdown has put extra pressure on us to be exercising, because it’s one of the things that we CAN do among all the other things we can’t. So, I think it makes us feel (well, me anyway), guilty if we don’t do it enough and that’s very damaging to our mental health. If you have a phobia about anything, which you very honestly discuss here Miranda, which affects the way we behave and how we decide to do things to work round it, then the pressure upon us is far greater. At the end of the day, you can only do what you can and as you say, celebrate your successes. Thank you for talking about this, it’s like a friend being there. X
