OHMYGOD HEY!
A year after I saw the show's workshop presentation, BABIES finally had a world premiere, fully staged production, which opened last week at the Other Palace Theatre in London.
The show, which is written by Martha Geelan and Jack Godfrey, was developed with BYMT and follows a group of 9 year 11 students who have to take care of baby simulators.

I so loved the staged concert last year. I knew it was to become a fully staged production sometime. I loved all the songs and the characters. so I am so pleased to be seeing the show tomorrow afternoon.

I saw the workshop last year and saw the first show at the other palace a couple of weeks ago. Love it. Agree with everything you’ve said. One point I had was I wish they had a small step leading to the larger step up either side. When I saw it last week, 2 of the actresses tripped up it as they tried to leave stage. It seemed a very large step to negotiate and it’s In an unlit area. I also didn’t love the scaffolding style set, particularly when the launch the babies off the cliff. You could audibly hear the bang as there was clearly nothing behind it to cushion the blow

I'm with you on the scaffolding. I also feel having the actress playing Leah sing her entire act 1 solo on top of the cliff was very restrictive and limiting. I could tell she wanted to move more, the emotions and the stakes are so high at this point and she could not express this physically.

Zoe Athena as Leah made me cry! Her performance is excellent as is the rest of the cast. I'm a 60+ year ol mum but loved this show. I also laughed a lot, the characters are so likeable that you end up really caring about them.

LOVED this show! Great to hear your thoughts. I actually liked the set and thought it resembled a playground, though maybe multicoloured poles would represent that more!

I saw it come to the lyric theatre with Martha for we were both in the book theif. Honestly, couldn't fault it! Incredible!!!

This kind of review makes me sad that I had long since sort of fallen out of the musical theatre scene, and now I live in regional Australia, so theatre is a bit harder to access. But as always, your incisive and eloquent reviews make me feel a bit more involved 🥰

We had them at school. We had to have it for a weekend for our health and social care course. I didn’t have to do it as I had a real baby at 15 and from what my mates were saying, I got the easier ride! The simulator babies had them up every hour😂

I am baffled by this being a 5-star review... you give Sky's Edge and Next to Normal 4 stars each - and THIS gets 5?! This is one of the worst musicals I've ever seen, I'm so confused

The simple explanation is that we have different opinions about subjective pieces of theatre - but I would add that the shows you mentioned have hugely different aims and tones against which they are judged. A 5* pantomime, for example, does not resemble 5* Shakespeare.

I just don’t think it’s a great music. Also confused by the mum character what was she addicted too or working as or is that irrelevant?

Honestly I think this musical has some of the worst lyrics I’ve ever heard. The characters are not remotely like real teenagers and are all cliché. I wanted to love it but it was dull and uninspired
