It’s funny how different people have different views on all of these lead sheets and realbook/Fakebook stuff. I’ve known people who despise real books and have the “if you don’t have it memorized you can’t play it outside of the practice room” attitude and I’ve known others, who are just as talented and skilled, who say “yeah the realbook is fine. Memory is great but the realbook or irealpro is totally cool too.” Nice episode and thoughts

I remember when my piano teacher told me where to go to buy my first Real Book back in the 80s, the guy jokingly asked me if I was from the FBI (I was 16) then said “here you go”

A comment on A7b9 as C#dim. It used to mystify me when I learnt harmony and jazz voicings. But I have to say that the confusion is not without its upside. You learn about how these upper notes have all this inter-relationships. And the diminished chord shows you how you don't always have to voice chords as shells or as 1-3-7. Because the bottom and top of a dim. chord form a 6th (in all its inversions) and there are some mighty nice 6th shells you can mix into your playing even for non dim. chords.

Hey, I’m a beginner looking to get into jazz without much chord theory knowledge, would the real book be a good jumping off point? Or should I solely try to learn by ear.

The Real Book is also Pat Metheny heavy. He was at Berklee around that time, and of course Gary Burton was then the head of department, who by the way was there going over charts and arrangements with Pat while putting together Bright Size Life, which is of course in The Real Book. Unquity Road. Pat said he wanted Burton to get a producer's credit on that album, but for whatever reason that didn't happen. The New Real Book series I think was possibly related to Chuck Sher of Sher music, who released a whole series of legal fake books in the 90s.

Les feuilles mortes, translated autumn leaves was composed in 1946 by Vladimir Kosma, dunno why it is so often wrong on real books, the original lyrics was written by Jaques Prėvert.

I read this online and I think it applies to the Real Book. This was discussing the chord progression and song Rhythm Changes.... " ....it should be noted that “Rhythm Changes” evolved into a chord progression that was not exactly Gershwin’s. As was often the case with other songs, jazz musicians streamlined the progression, reducing it to a simpler, more improv-friendly harmonic framework. " I think the Real Book can be seen as a streamlining of the songs of the classic era of songwriting, intended for those learning to play and NOT as a definitive version of any one song. Let's stop denigrating a very useful learning tool. One that I imagine taught MANY music students up to a point that they were able to criticize it and IF it wasn't around wouldn't know enough to know it's different than other renditions of any one song....ie biting the hand that feeds them.

Everybody seems to think Autumn Leaves is an old tune. Joseph Kosma wrote it in '45. It's funny because younger players always play it in double time and with the alternative/additional changes at the end before it goes to the last two five. And they play V/V to V there, disgusting

You guys are fun...just give the young ones something, right in the beginning, so they don't think, well, and leave.....next......Rolland VT4 = harmonys for your stinger..'O-pen-Stew-di-OH..oh pi day, oh pi day...it generates 2 harmonies based on MIDI input
