And a number of people dump on his voice later on when comparing him to …a younger him! He was so insane that he set an impossible standard for himself in many people’s eyes. I discovered his voice on the Promised Land album and fell in love with aspects other than his range. The insane highs in his earlier career were just a bonus. I say earlier, but there’s footage of him singing Queen of The Reich from like…this year or something and he knocks it outta the park.

Except “Deliverance” showed why Whip typically doesn’t write lyrics. *cringe* Riff was ok. Very generic maiden-esque, vocal melody was excellent (obviously, it was Geoff)…but my god those lyrics were awful lol. The Warning was a great debut album. Rage For Order, Mindcrime, Empire and Promised Land were all better though. Although I admit, I prefer the weakest tracks on The Warning to the weakest tracks on Empire (Resistance and One and Only).

Supposably the story go Geoff's parents made him take Opera lessons when he was a kid and when he got a little older he kinda rebelled and wanted get back at his parents for making him take Opera lessons so he started a rock band queensrÿche and play for his parents and he thought his parents would be mad but when they heard them play they love it and they helped sponsor the band to supposedly Geoff parents are rich and when they went to the top the oldest member in queensrÿche was 16 years old but I got this information from the tabloids and other media sources so I got to check into this more to see if all that's true because a lot of media and tabloids like to exaggerate but I thought I'd throw that out there if you heard anything like that this was quite some time ago when I heard that so I been doing some research on this and haven't found anything more on this but I know I have to a hella of a lot more digging on the internet because of people changing the names of things or the meanings of words so it takes longer to search for something if you don't know the exact words in your search sometimes it takes hours to find things for example they changed the meaning of the word hack it used to mean hack into a computer I can Branch off a tree but now it means if something works good they call it a hack and the program called life hacks it don't even sound right saying that or hack my life does that sound right saying that I don't think so it sounds like you messed up your life when you say that but that's just an example but if you or anybody else can find out more about this and could say something I would really appreciate it to find out if this is true or not and I liked your comment

The Maestro was all about breathing, support and learning to believe that you can vocal achieve anything and be phenomenal! You had to audition in order for the Maestro to accept you as a student. Geoff Tate has always been voted 2nd best voice in rock to Freddy Mercury's. I saw Queensryche in LA in the 80's just after Empire and they did the entire Operation Mind Crime live. Best show I ever saw. Most people don't see that the lead player Chris DeGarmo has a voice almost as good, you have to pay attention and listen for him. Plus he writes a lot of the songs. The whole band was awesome.

I have seen maybe thirty five different reactions to it, 17 or 18 from vocal coaches and experts. The reaction by the pros is always the same. Complete disbelief. Geoff Tate back in the day was easily one of the best vocalists going, period, full stop. Not metal vocalists, not rock vocalists, just singers/vocalists PERIOD. He would regularly hit G5 on the high end, and B1 at the low end. Honestly, he's up in the pantheon of best vocalists *ever* . As others have said, Operation: Mindcrime is indeed one of the greatest concept albums (metal or otherwise) ever made. That album is truly Queensryche at the height of their powers, and they never hit those heights again, unfortunately. Queensryche was my absolute favorite band for a number of years, but Empire was kinda meh (they way OVER-jumped on the "big hair metal band power ballad" train with Silent Lucidity), and they never hit the same heights again, especially when Chris DeGarmo (their lead guitarist and songwriter for much of their stuff) left the band. Still, Geoff could *easily* have sung opera professionally, but Metal is forever greater for his contributions.

Yeah he's a total original. A lot of people could hit those notes back then and higher, well, especially after he kind of raised the bar for the most part. But yeah Geoff just had like well he has an almost ancient sword and dragons type voice quality, but at he same time it also sounds almost futuristic and sci-fi. I'll never forget the day i first heard them. 13 years old would come home from school an turn on the stereo would sit out on the porch with friends and one day "Queen of the Ryche" was debuted on radio. I didn't hear who it was at the beginning but once it caught my ear, which was pretty instant, lol, i ran in the house and pressed record on my tape deck which i always had on the ready. So once it was over the radio went on to whatever song or commercial. I thought it was like the new Iron Maiden or something so we're listening to it back and i'm like no, Bruce ain't hitting Those notes. So i called the radio station to find out who the hell it was because they never went back and reiterated who they had just played, and sat on hold because apparently the phones were blowing up >D Needless to say that was kind of a new era of exceptionalism in metal. And it really was Queensryche were in their own league, and a lot of bands started taking influence from them in some way or an other.

Re hearing the notes you're singing with a loud band: Rob Halford said his ear monitors helped him tremendously with that, before them he felt like he was always pushing to sing "over" the band, whereas Sammy Hagar (whom he was speaking with about it) said he can't use the ear monitors at all, and went solely by stage sound and sang over it. I always found that interesting.

@Benito Kamelo I think my list is pretty representative of the best if their career. There is one from The Warning, two from Mindcrime, two from the EP (Plus an honorable mention), three from Empire, one from Rage for Order and one from Hear in the Now Frontier. I would hope that any list from you would be equally representative of the bulk of their career with their original lineup. But…..everyone has their own tastes. One thing I won’t compromise on, however, is that Take Hold of the Flame id the greatest song they ever did and Geoff’s greatest performance. I thought that 38 years ago, when I first heard it, and I still do. I do appreciate the comment, though.

Queensryche and Fates Warning are known to have started the Prog Metal genre in 1983. The genre is noted for a more artistic and melodic approach to metal. One of the key elements in the genre are entire albums with a common theme that tells a story. Many Prog Metal fans call them concept albums but I prefer the term Rock Opera. My favorite band, Savatage has done 3 of them and the very first they titled Streets: A Rock Opera. If that description is good enough for the best Prog Metal band ever, it is good enough for me.

Geoff Tate is pretty much the most talented heavy metal singer of all time. Plus, he has the tone of an angel. At his peak, no metal singer could sing live like Geoff either. To me, he was even better than Steve Perry live. And Steve himself was great.

@@sportsmom165 Dio, Bruce and a few others are great too. They were great live too. But still not close to what Geoff was at his peak live. Geoff sang close to the way his album sounded. The others guys don't. Tate held notes consistently longer than any metal singer in history in concert. Halford was good too, he could not do everything that tate could do. Dio's low end to mid range is pretty amazing, but did not sound as good as his albums in concert. Even Steven Perry did not perform as well in concert compared to his albums.
@sportsmom165
@sportsmom165 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hollingsworth2781 Dio was pitch perfect every time. His last performance, he looked like hell, as we were to learn, he was dying from cancer, but he still belted it & stayed in pitch, the entire time. Dio had absolutely no vocal training, he was a trumpet player. I'm sure if you asked Tate, Dio is probably one of his heros. No, Dio did not have the same range, but he brought new vocal techniques, when he sang.

No, Steve was massively overrated. The best Journey songs were the ones Greg Rolie sang. Now Steve is great but never had much power in his voice. As a pop singer that works, but it doesn’t compare to what many metal singers can do.

It cracks me up when people talk about noise being a distraction when you're on stage. I mean, it's not silent but there's less noise on stage than you might think. Most bands can actually talk between themselves fairly easily when they're performing. I mean, think about it, all of the speakers are facing away from the stage so that makes a BIG difference.

I actually think Jerry Cantrell is a better singer than Layne Staley Listen to My Song off of Jerry’s solo effort, Boggie Depot. It explains AIC’s incredible vocal harmonies. It’s like Queen. Freddie Mercury was a phenomenal singer, no doubt. But when you hear Brian May sing Too Much Love Will Kill You, from his solo effort Back to the Light, you understand where the incredible harmonies that Queen had, came from.

There are 2 distinct versions of this video. This is the one that was cleaned up in the studio and remastered. The live raw version is noticeably different to a trained musician or vocalist because there is much less vibrato and different pitches for some notes from here. Some are slightly flat or sharp and pitchy in the live LIVE format.
