For reference, Lynard Skynard wrote this song and it was originally sung by Ronnie Van Zant (Who died in a plane crash in 1977). His daughter Melody Van Zant married Jasin Todd, the guitarist from Shinedown. They used to play this song in Melody's mom's bar in Jacksonville, Florida. This is one of those reasons they consider this song personal.

I remember listening to this back in teh 70's on old 8 tracks tapes so extremely familiar with the song and find this to be an awesome cover. But had always wondered what the deal was about this song in reference to Shinedown so thank you for filling in some gaps there.

Best version of this is the "in the living room" where it's just Brent and the guitarist sitting on a couch. No extra equipment, nothing, just raw vocals.

There is a long story behind this song. It is a cover of the original by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The original guitarist in this band is married to Melody Van Zant who is the daughter of Ronnie from Lynyrd Skynyrd . Ronnie was one of the band members killed in a plane crash. Melody was only a year old then. She grew up without her dad. Shine down really took off as a band when they released this cover and in the video they have Ronnies granddaughter holding a picture of him. Later on Melody’s husband, Jasin Todd was fired from the band due to problems between him and Brent. At that time , out of respect for him and his family, the band chose not to perform this song. The video of this song is stellar. Brent kills it on the vocals!

Great vocalist without question. No accounting for taste, but I'm partial to David Draiman's voice, personally. Smith's definitely on my Mt. Rushmore of iconic modern rock singers, though.

The first Lynyrd Skynyrd album, which included this song, came out when I was only 12 and I was an instant fan. Simple Man remains my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Interestingly it was almost not recorded, much less included on the album. Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington wrote a wonderful song, and Ronnie's vocals can't be matched (although this came damn close). I am very happy that the song lives on especially with a band that has such a close connection with Ronnie Van Zant.

100% agree. Shinedown's version is good, but it just doesn't stand up to Lynyrd Skynyrd's version. Love the song so much, and love to see different bands takes on it, and I think Shinedown is the best cover I've ever heard. But yeah, just doesn't quite live up to the original.

The note you pointed out in the text he came in under pitch. He nails it when he is fresh. This was near the end of a long long concert. He was taxed heavy before he sang this. Should check out his live performance in a small setting for a small amount of people. It looks almost like it was in a home. He sounds so amazing.

He manipulates a lot of vowels with a tongue and mouth shape that would normally be used to sing a "Y" sound. Can becomes Keh-yan. Man becomes Meh-yan. Its very fast so you don't actually hear much of the "Y" sound. I'm not anywhere near being knowledgeable about singing, but going from personal experience, doing something similar does make it easier to be more resonant and forward placed compared to singing it in the "proper" way. I've also found that a very compressed tongue posture helps make "E" and "I" sounds more resonant. I can actually get some slight overtones when doing that. I noticed that Layne Staley and Chris Cornell seemed to do the same thing. Watch Chris Cornell and how little he actually opens his mouth, but how resonant and forward placed he can sound. I would bet you anything he's using a tongue posture similar to what I've found works for me. I don't know if any of that makes sense. Like I said, I know very little about proper singing technique.

Brent has a great voice.....surprised you have not done any AlterBridge. Myles Kennedy IMO is just as good, if not better. Both are in my top list. I recommend "Words darker than your wings" at Royal Albert Hall. However, his voice really shines on the studio version of BlackBird.....IMO, one of the best rock songs I've ever heard. His Billboard version of "Watch over you" is also awesome.

I was thinking the same thing. I've seen him absolutely smash it live and this wasn't a good representation of his amazing live vocals.

Most of his live performances he had his own track in the background for the high parts, not the full song just certain parts of it. He doesn't sound like he did that here.
