This is a video of me Operating HF Mobile with my Yaesu FT-891 and ATAS-120a screwdriver Antenna and my Renogy 100 watt Foldable Solar Suitcase, while on the Beach 🏖 in New Symrna, Florida! I make multiple contacts around the country as well as talk about my 1st Air Mobile Contact with an Air Canada 🇨🇦 Boeing 767 @ 35,000ft over the North Atlantic who was operating on the 20m Amateur Radio Band which was very exciting!

I like that you actually had a conversation with the guy in New York. Most every other video I've seen of HF ops is people simply making a contact and moving on. I find it much more interesting when you can actually have a conversation with someone that far away without internet, etc.

Great video. Came here looking for info on HF mobile, and caught your story about the ACOM 1000 and 7300. I have the same setup in the shack now. I too have generated the ARC Fault self protect function. Turned out, I had run the antenna through a lighting arrestor rated for only 300 watts, and had pushed about 800 through it. It didn't instantly trip, ran for a bit. But I have really enjoyed that amp.

Hi Bryan, yes the 7300 paired with the Acom 1000 works very very well! And of course being able to save different configuration profiles on the 7300 makes it so easy to go between using the 7300 bare foot or with the Acom! Thanks for your comments and thanks for watching 73 K4BBC

Have you ever considered doing a video on how to tune the atas using the 891 and then showing once tuned how to manually tune it for finer tuning or for man tuning after you have moved away from the freq you tuned to using the radios tuner?

I have both the FT 891 and IC 7300 as well, but I am always impressed with the 891's punch and DNR. If Yaesu would put a waterfall display on it like my Xiegu G90, it would be perfect.
@PrecisionGroupYT
@PrecisionGroupYT 4 жыл бұрын
Hi TXLorenzo, you are absolutely correct the FT-891 does have more punch 🥊! I had them both side by side in my shack fo awhile testing and comparing them and the 891 definitely had more punch with its 100 watts as compared to the 7300 and yes the DNR on the Yaesu is superior in my opinion in my experience between the 2 radios. An 891 version with a waterfall/spectrum scope (that doesn’t go silent when active) and an easier user interface would be great! Who knows perhaps Yaesu is working on one. I also wonder if Yaesu is planning to upgrade their Ft-818 QRP rigs with Icom coming out with the IC-705 (which I have been greatly anticipating and waiting for it’s release) thanks for watching and commenting! 73 K4BBC

Got a similar setup in my Ford Ranger.. FT-857D YSK separation kit.. I have the ATAS 120A set for HF and 6m .. I have a separate antenna mounted for 2m and 70cm. That works better for me.. On the downside ,I find the ATAS 120A is not so good on 10m .. That maybe just my radius mobile in relation to my QTH .. Central Thailand..All that said the ATAS 120A is very dependant on very good earthing and grounding on your vehicle.. Overall I think its the best compact mobile package out there.. I Also run the IC-7300 as my main HF Rig in my shack.. Great minds think alike/ Lol.. The Yaesu FT-857D is my weapon of choice portable static as I do a lot camping... 73"s Great upload..P.S. Hi Jimmy W I just used a PL259 mirror mount and connected the coax to it and of course used coax seal to keep water out of the connection. The mirror mount was mounted on the side of the back of the bed and I protected the holes I drilled to prevent rust and because the mirror mounts directly to the side of the bed of the truck it has an excellent ground.... so I have no grounding issues! Hi Mike Simpson, I do not leave the ATAS-120 on my vehicle all the time as I am always Security conciseness and as the Antenna is almost $400 and anyone who knows about the Antenna could simply unscrew it and walk off with it so I only put it on when I am going to be using it and will take it off when I am not (even if I just stop off to get a bite to eat or go into a store) Now I have no issue with having it on my vehicle while driving just when I am stopped and away from my vehicle! I do love the ease of using the ATAS-120 along with an Yaesu ATAS capable radio as all you need is the radio and antenna and no extra equipment in between and it tunes and works extremely well!! To put my answer in proper perspective I do not leave this Antenna on all the time ( as it’s too easy for someone to just unscrew it and walk off with it ) so I only put it on the mount on the vehicle when I want to operate HF Mobile! But with that said I love this Antenna and as it works so seamlessly with a Yaesu radio that has the ATAS control built in ( like the FT-891…..there are a few other Yaesu radios that also have the ATAS control feature built in!), I feel as long as you have an Antenna mount that is made to carry the weight of the ATAS-120a and as long as the mount has a good ground connection you should get great results like I have! I now have the antenna mount for this on the rear hatch of our 2013 VW Jetta TDI Sport-wagon and it works very well. I hope this reply helps! 73 and good luck K4BBC

@@PrecisionGroupYT I've been eyeing the 891 and ATAS 120A for a while, but couldn't find an antenna mounting solution I was happy with. Your mount has convinced me, looks like I'm saving up, is that a regular mirror mount? And how did you mount and bond it to your bed like that? Also do you leave it on going down the road? Does it hold up to highway speeds well?
@PrecisionGroupYT
@PrecisionGroupYT Жыл бұрын
@@rustytalon5187 Hi Rusty, yes I used an SO239 Mirror mount which I drilled into the side of the truck bed near the Drivers side tail light! There was not a grounding issue as it’s all metal and all ties together. I put it their after having it previously mounted on the back side of the tool box (which I ran a ground wire from the mount to one of the bolts holding the tool box to the truck bed), but I didn’t like how exposed it was to wind and possibly hitting objects being that high up on the tool box so I put it where you saw it in the video to keep it lower and safer and both of these locations worked well. When I drilled holes to mount it in the truck bed I sprayed Rustoleum in the newly drilled holes to avoid any rusting issues plus I had access to that area by removing the trucks brake light to properly install the bolts. This location worked really well and I had great results! As far as going done the Highway it faired quite well but I will say as the ATAS-120A Antenna is a bit pricey I don’t leave it on the mount unless I’m specifically wanting to operate HF Mobile ( to easy for someone who knows what it is to walk up and unscrew it and take it…. Plus I wouldn’t want to leave it in the elements all the time for the motors sake) I hope this helps 73 K4BBC

@PrecisionGroupYT
@PrecisionGroupYT Жыл бұрын
On this Truck install it is mounted through the truck’s bed into the truck frame ( the holes I drilled through I covered with Rustoleum to prevent them from rusting) so it has a solid ground but previously I had the ATAS-120 mounted off of my tool box so what I did is run a ground wire from the bolt that secured the tool box to the truck’s bed (which is connected to the truck’s frame) to give it a good ground! The question would be where you mounted it does it have a good ground and if not you could run a ground wire from a bolt on the frame of your vehicle to the ATAS mount and also where you currently have the antenna is the antenna close to any metal which could reflect the signal back into the antenna? I hope this helps! 73

Good vid, tell us a little about the way you mounted the Alas antenna to the sidewalk of the pickup bed. ??
@PrecisionGroupYT
@PrecisionGroupYT 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, On the back of the 2006 Dodge there is a flat area on the pickup bed near the tailgate opposite the driver side taillight. This is where I mounted it by drilling two holes there for the SO239 mount (after drilling the holes I then painted them to protect them from rust) I was able to gain access to put the nuts on by taking off the driver side taillight and also from underneath the pickup bed in this area. This made it a solid mounting area by having it mounted in a solid part of the bed which additionally helped the mount be well grounded For the ATAS-120a’s operation. Another reason I liked it mounted in this area is that the side of the pickup bed and the tailgate helped protect the antenna from possible damage. I hope this helps!! 73

Pretty awesome brother! I am new to HF, been a ham for 21 years, just passed my general yesterday. I am debating between this antenna and a little tarheel II. Do you know anything about the tarheel other than it cost a fair amount more? Also, what mount are you using? Tarheel's mount is $140.00 but I could use this mount on the face of a truck toolbox and a u clamp to hold it up higher.
@PrecisionGroupYT
@PrecisionGroupYT 5 жыл бұрын
Hi kylefreemason thank you!! And a big congratulations on passing your General!!! Unfortunately I do not know much about the Tarheels but I think for those you need a separate controller to raise and lower the Antenna ( don’t quote me on that) but to get it in the appropriate position for the band you are going to use and to get the SWR right! This is a big reason I love the Yaesu system as ounce you have the ATAS antenna you just need the radio to make it operate and nothing else!! ( just make sure the model of Yaesu HF radio you plan to use has the ATAS system built in ). On my FT-891 I just hit the tune button and the radio handles the rest with the ATAS-120 and that’s it which makes it really convenient and super easy and I get great reports!! Now I am just using a standard SO239 mirror mount ( $20 or so )that I Bolted to the inside of my truck bed near the tailgate which is ideal as it keeps the antenna lower and the bed and the tailgate help protect the ATAS Antenna from being hit or from high winds. I did originally have the ATAS-120 and mount mounted on my tool box with an extra ground wire going from the mount on the tool box to a solid ground on the truck bed but I didn’t like it being so high up and exposed so I moved it to it’s current location. But the ATAS-120 operated just fine in both places! I hope this helps answer your questions! Thank you for watching and commenting and I hope to hear you on HF in the near future!! 73’s K4BBC

Very Good kylefreemason I think you will really like your new FT-891. When you are planning to go off roading through woods and such I would just take it down but make sure you put an SO239 threaded cap on the mount to protect the connection from getting water and dirt inside it. Especially as all you need to do is just unscrew it and off you go! I have always been very Security conciseness. @@PrecisionGroupYT It is a sad fact thieves are in every walk of life. I did work up a way to lock the atas in place so that only the whip portion could be stolen. If I understand it correctly from the HAM I spoke to on the Air Canada flight is that he only operated the HF radio on the plane for a short window mid flight and while I am not a commercial airline pilot I would assume they have both an aviation radio and a HF capable radio as well sort of like many HAMs having a VHF/UHF radio and a HF radio!
